CONGRATULATIONS!
The priests and entire parish community at
St. Nicholas of Tolentine wish to congratulate
Alberto & Ana Vega
on their 67th Wedding Anniversary
celebrated on February 26, 2016.
We congratulate them and pray for their good health!
From the Pastor’s Desk…
On this third Sunday of Lent, the Church provides us another moment of grace to
repent. Repentance is, feeling sorry for the past sins and making a firm resolve not to
deliberately commit them again. Lenten Season is a call to repentance for the times
we neglected and failed both God and our fellow-brothers and sisters, and chose evil
over good. Through our repentance, and through His compassion, and mercy, we
would be healed and restored to our normal healthy Christian life.
In the first reading, Moses was called by God from the burning bush to lead his peo-
ple from slavery to freedom, The Exodus story is ours as well. We journey with the
Church throughout these forty days of Lent and seek to be free from sin, and what-
ever hold us back from serving our Lord and neighbors. This Lent, Jesus is ready to
suffer with us so that we might be free from the slavery of our sins, addictions
and weaknesses.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks about a fig tree that doesn’t produce fruit but is given
more time. The good news is that we are given many opportunities to learn from our
failures and start all over again. We are given another Lent to call upon the Lord who
is “Kind and merciful.” We are given another time to enter into the life of the Church
and renew our life.
Let us take the opportunities which this Lent offers us at St. Nick’s. We can care for
the poor through Operation Rice Bowl. We can take time for prayers as we use “Little
Lent books” distributed at the beginning of this season. We can gather together for
the Stations of the Cross every Friday at 7PM (Spanish) in the Church and every Sat-
urday after the 12:05 PM Mass in the Chapel. We can go for confession from Mon-
day to Saturday before the Noon Mass. We will also have a special service of recon-
ciliation at both Parish Mission Services this Tuesday.
A Lenten Parish Mission (Monday to Wednesday-Feb 29 -Mar 2)
During Lent there are many things we do as an individual that help us to grow in
faith. At the same time there are other spiritual exercises we do as a community. A
Lenten Parish Mission is one of those communal events where the whole parish fam-
ily actively participates for its spiritual nourishment. I encourage all of you and
your family and friends to be part of this grace-filled opportunity. We welcome
Fr. Sensan Taylor, OFM. Cap. and Sister Karen Cavanagh, CSJ, our presenters
who will help us to experience the Mercy of God during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
There will be a service at 12:30 PM or 7:30 PM. Come as a family- bring a friend.
God bless you,
Fr. John Francis

Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person
Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live
and work in the world. In this principle, Sacredness and Dignity
of the Human Person, we remember that, when God created us,
he made us in His image and likeness. That means that every
human being has a special value and purpose. We need to care
for each other so that we can be the people God calls us to be.
Lenten Regulations
ABSTINENCE – All the faithful who have reached 14
years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.
FASTING – All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance
may also be taken on two other occasions during the day.
EASTER DUTY – After they have been initiated into the
Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obli-gation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year.
This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the
year. By special indult, in the United States, the time pe-
riod for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (Feb. 14,
2016) to Trinity Sunday (May 22, 2016).
