ACT OF CONTRITION O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve,

with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen. OR

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.

Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen. OR

LENTEN SERIES: The Healing Journey, Suffering Loss

Deacon Mahoney will lead this Lenten Series on Thursday, Mar. 3rd; and Mar. 10th from 7 to 8 pm in the Conference Room. In this series he will address the nature of our journey to eternal life and God’s great plan for us in Christ Jesus. He will also address the nature and role of loss, which is part of the human condition, and point to a spirituality of suffering. And finally, rooted in a deeper understanding of the journey and God’s great

plan, we’ll be able to get the most out of our Lenten journey and experience with even deeper appreciation the joy of Easter! If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Mike at 252-571-1597.

Dear Friends at Saint Paul:

With Tuesday’s “great day” for the Holy Day and the Year of Mercy, and the Thursday evening Penance Service, I want to emphasize that a large portion of our Catholic population, including our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters at the 1 pm Sunday Mass are anticipating SATURDAY’s celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You are very welcome to attend the early Mass with morning songs (Misa con Mañanitas) at 4 am on Saturday, followed by breakfast at 6 am. You may find the FIESTA time more agreeable: Sunday at 2 pm in the Family Life Center. I was SO impressed last year: it is a great celebration. Try to stop by!

May the Lord of Advent’s eagerness and promise accompany all your December efforts “to know, love, and serve Him in this life and be happy with Him in the next!” Amen!

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT-February 28, 2016

MERCY

Merciful God, even when we are slow to repent, you show us kindness and mercy. When our hearts are blinded by sin we turn away from you and slowly

wither like the fig tree. O God of compassion, renew our hearts so that, like Moses, we might hear your

nourishing and life-giving words and turn from sin; may we bear abundant fruit and be signs of your mercy to those who live in darkness.

Give us the grace to turn from our worldly desires and seek the repentance you graciously offer so that, standing on holy ground, we may see your magnificence and give you

glory for ever and ever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Today’s Readings: Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15; Psalm 103:1-4, 6-8, 11; 1 Corinthians 10:1-6,10-12; Luke 13:1-9.

Jesus’ words in the Gospel hopefully disturb and challenge you to ask, “What must I die to in order to bear fruit?” This death is a sacrifice for others. You lay aside your ambitions for the good of the community. You name the sin that entraps and keeps you from God. Such dying leads to the life promised by Christ because it aligns us to his Paschal Mystery. Jesus is very clear that if you do not repent you will die. What thoughts/feelings do these words present to you? Like Moses who led the Israel-ites out of slavery, Jesus frees us from our slavery and gives us life. For what do you need to repent? What is consuming you and keeping you from serving others? Both the psalm and the parable about the fig tree remind us that God is kind and mer-ciful. God does not give up on or abandon us, but waits patiently for us to bear fruit. Repentance is necessary for us to bear fruit. This Lent we have the opportunity to examine and excise what is choking us and causing us to be barren. Through fast-ing, prayer, almsgiving and works of mercy, we begin to nourish our souls and open ourselves to God’s mercy. Take time this week to meditate on these readings and discuss how repentance leads to new life!

THIS WEEK AT HOME…

Monday, Feb. 29th—2Kings 5:1-5; Psalm 42:2-3; 43:3-4; Luke 4:24-30. We learn that Jesus was sent for all people and those who hear the Word will be drawn in and healed. Tuesday, March 1st—Daniel 3:25, 34-43; Psalm 25:4-9;Matthew 18:21-35. Jesus paints us a picture of mercy as he seeks to teach his disciples about forgiveness. It’s not always easy to forgive a neighbor, but as Christians, we must follow Jesus’ example. Wed. , March 2nd—Deuteronomy 4:1,5-9; Psalm 147:12-13,15-16,19-20; Matthew 5:17-19. To follow Jesus means to suffer and to love one’s neighbor. Spend a few moments in prayer asking for guidance. Thurs. March 3rd—Jeremiah 7:23-28; Psalm 95:1-2,6-9;Luke 11:14-23. What makes it so hard to follow God’s will? God is madly in love with us and desires for us to be in love with Him. Reach out to Him, He’s waiting for you. Fri. March 4th—Hosea 14:2-10;Psalm 81:6-17; Mark 12:28-34. God desires love and not sacrifices as in the Old Testament. How do you understand love as your mission? Sat. March 5th—Hosea 6:1-6; Psalm 51:3-4,18-21; Luke 18:9-14. Hosea reminds us that God desires steadfast love. We see this love in the tax collector who honestly comes to God to seek mercy. God will have mercy on those who love him.
