PASTOR’S CORNER SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2014

Dear Friends at Saint Paul, This Thanksgiving Weekend gives me the chance to thank each and every one of you who are part of our parish. Father Upah and I are eager to express to you our appreciation for your support, prayers, and presence. I would like especially to commend our great staff and volunteers who are dedicated to hospital-ity and service for every parishioner and visitor. Every committee or group meeting that I have attended has been filled with people eager to succeed for the benefit of their parishioners, their neighbors and the needy. Thank you! This is the First Sunday of Advent and thus the start of a new liturgical year. I am eager to discover all those customs and traditions that the people of Saint Paul hold dear in the coming celebrations. A prayer-ful Advent truly is the best preparation for Christmas because it allows us to create “space” for God, to teach us how to trust... it is the season of promise and the Advent of our God! We have a great gift to offer our community and our neighbors because we are called to fix our sight on Christ and His arrival in our midst. Don't give in to the temptations of busy-ness and the obligations of gift-giving or decorating. Do give in to the moments of silence and quiet and the stillness of anticipation. Examine your conscience. Calm your fears. Unwind the knots furrowed into your brow or in your heart. The season of promise is about expectation and assurance because God is worthy of our trust. This First Sunday of Advent also marks the completion of year three for introducing and using the new Roman Missal – the prayers of the Mass. The first year (2012) gave us the chance to read the new words. The second year (2013) brought us the chance to learn the new Missal. This last – third year (2014) - has been our year to pray the new Missal. Read, Learn and Pray! The “standard” words have now become more familiar, more comfortable. The idioms and phrasing have become easier to hear and understand. The beauty and intricacy of the translation has become more tangible and transparent. May God bless our praying in the prayers of the Mass. May God bless our reverence in the worship He deserves! Finally, this First Sunday of Advent provides us with a new annual Hymnal in Breaking Bread, the blue covered hymnal in each pew. Please force yourself to take some time in becoming familiar with this “worship aid” as it contains prayers, instructions, Sacred Scripture and, of course, hymns and songs for worship. It is not just “page xyz” that should capture your attention for this or that reading or song: There is prayerful preparation for the Mass. There is time to learn the prayers. There is the invitation to absorb the Spirit of the Liturgy. It is not just a collection of music; it is a doorway to prayer and praise: Walk right in! You're welcome here! Peace,

A Holiday Tradition!

ADVENT MESSAGES 2014 - FIRST SUNDAY of ADVENT

“Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” - Isaiah 40:31 “God walks into your soul with silent step. God comes to you more than you to Him. Never will His coming be what you expect, and yet never will it disappoint. The more you respond to his gentle pressure, the greater will be your freedom.” -Fulton J. Sheen from Simple Truths “Are you perfectly happy? Or are you still looking for happiness? … That (our) life is most effectively lived when every now and then (it)withdraws from the scene of action to contemplation, where one learns the terrible defeat and futility which come from excessive absorption in detail and action….In silence, there is humility of spirit or what might be called “wise passivity.” In such the ear is more important than the tongue, God speaks, but not in cyclones — only in the zephyrs and gentle breezes….Only in solitariness is true spirituality born, when the soul stands naked before its God.… In this discovery is born love of neighbor, for then we love our fellow human beings, not because of what they can do for us, but because we see that they too are real or potential children of God.” - Fulton J. Sheen from Way to Inner Peace “Repose allows us to contemplate the little things we do in their relationship to the vast things which alone can give them worth and meaning. It reminds us that all actions get their worth from God: “worship” means “admitting worth.” To worship is to restore to our workaday life its true worth by setting it in its real relationship to God, Who is its end and ours.” - Fulton J. Sheen from Way to Happiness

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK Restore, O God, our sight, open our lips and souls, so that when your gracious Word is sent, we will be able to shout joyfully to you, “Come.” Help us to make room for your Word by spending quiet time in your presence, so that we allow You to create in us hearts overflowing with love for You and our neighbors.
