SHARING OUR GIFTS
Autumn is the season for harves ng and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week’s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gi s we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable, a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? As part of our Thanksgiving, our parish will be offering the Christmas Boun ful Tree.
We have reached out to local grade school counselors in an effort to care
for all families in need. Each ornament will list one gi request, under $35. There will also be “cash” or “gi
card” ornaments for those who prefer to have us do the shopping. Gi s should be wrapped, with the ornament
a ached on the outside, for iden fica on purposes, and be returned to Saint Paul by November 26th.The
schools will then assist with distribu ng the gi s to the families which they nominated. We are very excited by this program, bringing blessings to the families, but also
to you who choose to par cipate! Thank you!

SAINT PAUL WOMEN'S JAIL MINISTRY
Our year has been busy with weekly visits to the many
ladies incarcerated at the Craven County Deten on Center. To date, we have mailed to
"ladies on the inside" 56 Bibles (as we are not allowed to hand deliver them) .
We also are con nuing the Pen Pal program, started by one of our volunteers last fall. We urgently need Pen
Pals for many of these ladies who are wai ng, and who will be at the facility for a long period of me.
Ladies of the parish, many of you are may be looking for a way to be more ac ve in our parish--this is an
excellent way to do so--without leaving the comfort of your own home. You can be a posi ve influence in the
life of another woman! All le ers are sent with the sender's informa on being anonymous and all le ers received back come through
the church office. If you are would like more informa on, or feel that God
is calling you to do this, please call Susan T. at 252-617-9865.
We ask for everyone's prayers for the ladies on the "inside" so that when they are released they will go
forward in a "good" direc on; and for us, the ministry volunteers, so that we will be able to "reach" as many
as possible with the good news of the Gospel.

The Knights of Columbus will be selling an assortment of beau ful Christmas
cards to support “Keeping Christ in Christmas”. Cards will be on sale in the
Atrium a er all masses this weekend and on November 25th and 26th and December 2nd and 3rd.
The Junior Catholic Daughters would like to thank everyone for their support
during the CDA Christmas Bou que. Because of your generosity, the girls
will be able to con nue Serve the Lord with Gladness by sharing the holidays
with their friends at Good Shepard Nursing Home. Special thanks to Sarah and Liz Kerner for all their hard work in planning the Junior’s cra s and booth this year!

SAINT PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Saint Paul School recently awarded Academic Honors to students for achievement during the first quarter of the school year. Students in grades three through eight received Academic Honors for Core Courses of Math, English--Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Religion. Criteria for the awards are as follows:
Scholar’s List: Achievement of a 93% average or above, with no grade lower than 93% (all A’s) in all subjects including specials, with consistent effort and sa sfactory conduct in all areas.
Honor Roll: Achievement of an 85% average, with no single grade below 85% (all A’s and B’s) in all subjects including special, with consistent effort and sa sfactory conduct in all areas.

Dear Friends at Saint Paul: We have had our first mee ng to organize neighborhood Masses in some of the many different areas of our parish. During Lent, Father Schuetz and I are commi ed to bringing the parish together in a more community-centered and small group way. These Lenten Masses will allow parishioners a special Mass during Lent. We hope people will get to know each other a li le and for us to know more people, experience prayer close to our homes and help build community among neighbors when we are back at Main Campus on Country Club Road. We need help to organize and carry out these Lenten neighborhood Masses. The commi ee has five members but we feel that at least three more would really help. We would appreciate the aid, especially, of a real estate agent or two who knows our county's neighborhoods and their rela onships, possible sites for Mass and the community leaders. The Masses will be weekdays in the evening, but we are planning on one Mass earlier for those who don't drive a er dark. They can take place at any loca on that will help to bring a neighborhood or several related neighborhoods together. (Please note that we are not aiming at individual housing developments). An outline for the virtue of PRUDENCE: I promised to share ideas from my sermon last weekend so that those from the 5:00pm and 8:00am Masses would have a reminder. Those from the 11:00am and 1:00pm Masses can learn from this outline as well, though you didn't hear that sermon. The First Reading from Mass last weekend had this line: “Wisdom is the perfec on of prudence.” Surely wisdom is desirable and a lo y goal...so, how can we “perfect prudence?” The virtue of Prudence is one of the four “cardinal” virtues, meaning virtues on which all the other virtues depend. The four cardinal virtues are prudence, jus ce, temperance and courage. (There are three “spiritual” or theological virtues: faith, hope and charity). Prudence is the virtue concerned with the “Prac cal Reason” or the thinking necessary to take prac cal decisions, i.e., to DO something. Prudence helps us know when to act. It is o en called the “queen of the virtues” because a pruden al judgment puts all other virtues into prac ce. We must resist the modern tendency to use the word “prudence” in a way that means “back away from a risk;” this is a misuse of the reference to the virtue of prudence. There are four “skills” or necessary ac ons each person must use to contribute to a prudent decision. The first is “foresight” or the ability to look ahead and predict possible outcomes to a decision to act. The second is “circumspec on” which calls us to look around for alterna ves and see if there is a be er way to achieve our desired outcome. Next is “wariness” or “cau on” so that we iden fy where the dangers are that we may avoid them. The fourth is “shrewdness” or “alacrity” by which we come to a decision about what we are to do efficiently and without hesita on. Summarizing, prudence requires that we “look ahead, look around, look down, decide” and then go! There are two “opposites” to prudence that we must avoid: every virtue is defined as the mean between extremes (in medio stat virtus). For prudence, too li le makes us rash. Rashness is the opposite of prudence. We act before we really understand the need to act. Too “much” prudence makes us unable to act and we suffer paralysis. This is the burden of the perfec onist who gets li le done because nothing is ever perfect. Paralysis is also the opposite of prudence. Let's pray for more wisdom, and the prudence it takes to get there!
