Thursday, September 9, 2021, is the Memorial of St. Peter Claver, who ministered to enslaved Africans. Accordingly, he is a patron saint of African Americans and of enslaved peoples. Each year on the Feast of St. Peter Claver, we are encouraged to engage in heightened prayer and action to strive for peace in our communities. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of St. Peter Claver Church, founded by Servant of God, Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will celebrate a special Mass on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph to commemorate the memorial of this great saint and to celebrate the founding of St. Peter Claver Church. The Mass will begin at 7:30PM and will be televised live on NET-TV.

The Parish Religious Education/Faith Formation Programs of the Diocese of Brooklyn is committed to opening the catechet-ical year on time, in person, for every student. Catechetical Leadership, Catechists, and Staff of our Faith Formation Pro-grams are committed to doing everything possible to support the faith formation and health and safety of every member of our school communities. Since March 2020, COVID-19 continues to bring many challenges to our Catholic Parish communities. The Pastors, Catechetical Leaders, and Educa-tional Leaders, and Staff of all our communities undertook these challenges and made what others claimed was impossi-ble possible. Our Catholic Parishes kept our doors open to provide those spiritual opportunities that allow faith to flour-ish. We continue to believe that in-person instruction is best for our religious education students, even as we continue to face new variants of the COVID-19 virus. As the new Delta variant continues to circulate and the transmission rate in-creases, especially among children under age 12, we need to do all we can to ensure the health and safety of each mem-ber of our religious education communities. To ensure the health and safety of our families, all Parish Religious Educa-tion programs within the Diocese of Brooklyn will continue to use the COVID-19 Health and Safety guidelines. These guidelines utilize the implementation of a layered approach of preventive strategies:
•Consistent and correct mask use
•Physical Distancing
•Ventilation
•Handwashing and respiratory etiquette
•Staying home when sick and getting tested
•Contact tracing, in combination with isolation and quarantine
•Cleaning and disinfection
Please be assured that we, like everyone, want to resume "pre-pandemic" life. Yet, the pandemic continues to cause concern for cause heartache, confusion, and rising anxiety levels for us and our loved ones. We appreciate your sup-port and cooperation with these health and safety guidelines, intended to ensure in-person instruction and protect our parish communities. As city and state guidance continues to evolve, these guidelines will be monitored and updated May God continue to bless all our Faith Formation communities!
