PENTECOST JUNE 8, 2014

the

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Pius V and St. Joseph parish communities,

St Pius V is undergoing significant changes, as previously announced Mickey Kimmes is retiring after 33 years of faithful service to St. Pius V church. Please join us in wishing Mickey well as she begins the next adventure of her life. Change is never easy. It always demands saying “good bye” to a way of thinking and living in order to say “hello” to something new. Please join us in honoring Mickey at her reception held on Sunday, June 15th after the 8:30 am mass in St. Pius V’s basement.

Over the course of this summer St. Pius V parish will commence work on four major projects. The first project is remodeling the liturgical space; it includes installing new church pews, new altar, painting, and matching colors for the new furnishings. Volunteers are needed to help Shawn Carpenter installing the pews; painting, heavy lifting, cleaning, and gardening are greatly needed and appreciated.

The second project had already begun over Lent time 2013, this project included a much needed space addition and utilities for our church kitchen; the new addition will ease the kitchen’s traffic and enhance the use of our kitchen facility for parish events.

The third project involves the installation of a Marian Shrine on the southeast corner of the church; the Marian shrine and landscape include a 4’ wide sidewalks connecting to the sidewalk by the south entrance of the church. This statue depicts Mary as a Mother holding a child with two small children praying and looking up to our Blessed Mother.

The outdoor project has a seating area and a platform for the statue. A garden committee is being formed to maintain the area around the shrine, if you are willing to volunteer a couple of hours of your summer doing gardening at St. Pius V, please contact Jeanette Croatt.

The fourth project includes the construction of a 16’ semi-circular driveway on the south side of the church. The new driveway will have an entrance of about four parking spaces up from the present sidewalk and will exit next to the garage. After the addition of an elevator last fall and drop-off driveway this fall St. Pius V’s south entrance is quickly becoming the most popular entrance to our church facility. All these projects have been submitted and approved by the members of St. Pius V’s Parish Council.

Change and transformation is not easy, but it is necessary. John Henry Newman reminded us: “To live is to change, and to have changed often is to have become perfect.” As Catholics all must look to responsible use of our limited resources. Good stewardship makes it important to find ways to share our resources creatively. For this purpose I am inviting you to prayerfully consider contributing to these projects. We have set up a contribution account named, “Blessed Virgin Chart Account”. Perhaps, you will like to give your contribution as memorial for a love one.

Friends in Christ, together we can complete these projects and more. Do not forget to turn to Our Blessed Mother in prayer because “through her anything is possible”.

Yours Truly, Fernando Ortega, Pastor

FROM FATHER STAN 3

As the school year ends, there are a number of transitions, whether in attitude, approach to life (It’s summer!) moving to a different school or having ended formal education, physical moves, or changes in marital status, any number of things.

Some changes in our parishes: Mass times – I appreciate that most people are being supportive about this. I do recognize that when you reduce services, there are sacrifices. On the other hand, it will allow me to be more present on Sundays, to visit faith formation classes a bit at Vermillion, attend and/or encourage gatherings after Masses in other parishes and provide each parish with some time at a premium, community building time for the Eucharist.

Sr. Tresa is stepping down as principal, as noted before. She will become the director of faith formation for all three parishes, as well as do some pastoral visiting, facilitate some adult education, and working part time as an aid in the school. Surprisingly, we hope to have her do this while working a reduced schedule. Sr. Tresa Margret and Sr. Noel will be leaving for India Monday, June 9, returning in mid-August. Blessings on their time away, reconnecting with family and their religious community in India.

Raena Reinardy is stepping away from facilitating the Faith Formation classes for St. Mary and St. Mathias. I very much appreciated her work with that these past several years. It took some work off my plate, and gave me some flexibility when hearing confessions in and out of the parish during Advent and Lent. It became a bigger job than originally planned, with more responsibilities, especially with the older grades. She handled it all with skill, grace and good nature. Thanks Raena!

In addition, at all parishes there will be some maintenance work done, whether small or large, e.g. some painting or varnishing at St. Mathias, painting and roof repair and landscaping at St. John the Baptist, heating system replacement and other possible items at St. Mary’s Church. I’m hoping for a rather quiet summer, but it probably won’t be!

Several of our parishes have not yet reached their goal for the Catholic Services appeal. At St. Mary and St. Mathias we need a bit more in order to get a rebate from the Archdiocese. Please make a donation if you have not done so yet.

What makes a parish a parish? It is more than a place to hold services, be it Sunday Mass, weddings, baptisms or funerals. A parish needs members, not consumers. It needs to worship, do ministry, educate, reach out to other, show charity, develop ways of prayer, study, hospitality and generosity. About 25 years ago a group of people looked at the scriptures, canon law and other resources and came up with a list of seven essential elements for a vibrant parish.

They include: Sacraments and Worship. Through these the parish community experiences sacred moments of healing, forgiveness, commitment, communion and service. The celebration of the Eucharist and well planned worship services which effectively proclaim the Word of God among us and invite active participation by all members will be provided by the parish so that the parishioners may be initiated and sustained in the Body of Christ.

Prayer and Spirituality. The parish community is primarily a community of faith. Opportunities for places and times of private and communal prayer are to be provided with sensitivity toward the rich variety of cultural expressions.

Ministry, Charity and Justice. Members of the parish are called to become ministers through their reception of the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The most significant place for that ministry to take place is in the everyday life of parishioners seeking to renew society with the spirit of the gospel. The parish community must also acknowledge and promote ministry which is directed to, for, and with the sick, the dying, the poor, the disabled, the afflicted, the lonely, the alienated, and the unborn. It must also promote family life, catechesis, education and action on behalf of justice for all.

In the celebration of the sacred liturgy, the various ministries of the Church such as reader, special Eucharistic minister, server and cantor should be exercised, for it is in the assembly of the people of God that the Church is a sign or sacrament of its own nature.

Evangelization and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The parish community shall have planned programs and processes to give and receive the gospel with all including those who no longer practice their religion or who do not actively embrace any religion.

Education and Catechesis. One measure of a parish’s success “... is its ability to foster a sense of vocation, of eagerness to live out the basic baptismal commitment to service whether this be done as a lay person, religious, deacon or priest. The parish community will ensure that the Catholic Education is available to all its members, of all ages.

Consultation and Governance. The parish community shall ensure that consultative structures be in place within the parish whereby the pastor will be made aware of the people’s needs, especially spiritual needs, their desires and their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church so as to develop an awareness that all parishioners are members of the parish as well as the diocesan and Universal Church. Administration and Stewardship. The parish community shall ensure proper and just fiscal administration, business, personnel and property management in response to the community’s commitment of time, talent and treasure.

Is your parish doing all this? Are you a part of it?

The demolition phase for the installation of the new heating system will begin on Monday. This will bring about the removable of all the pipes running through the pews and many of the pipes hanging from the ceiling downstairs. There will be some holes through the floor where the pipes have been. All those should be less than two inches in diameter. There will also be some holes in the plaster downstairs where the pipes go through the walls. All that will be addressed during the summer.

Thank you to everyone that joined in congratulating our high school graduates last

Sunday. Thank you to the KC’s, Catholic United Financial, Trophy House & Carrie Schaffer for contributing to the gift basket for the graduates. Thanks you to St. Theresa & St. Nicholas Society for funding the celebration and the Junior class and parents for hosting. We will stop Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays for a few weeks as the noise and work of putting in the new heating system will not be conducive to adoration.

We will be putting a book in the back of the church, a sort of calendar where people can enter in birthdays, wedding anniversaries and death anniversaries. Those names will be read as part of the intercessions as those dates come up. Please write them in at least 1-2 weeks ahead of time.

Summer vacation is here, check out our library of books and movies in the back of church. If you have checked books or movies out, please remember to return them to share with others.

KNIGHTS CORNER…

It is little known that for over 20 years the

Knights of Columbus owned the ground on which Yankee Stadium was built. When Pope Paul VI had Mass there in 1965, it was actually on land owned by the Knights of Columbus. It has since been sold to the Yankees. When the stadium opened in 1923, Governor Al Smith, later a candidate for President, and a Knight, threw out the first pitch. During the game, fellow Knight of Columbus Babe Ruth hit the first homerun in the stadium.
