Rev. James Young , Pastor 1203 Pine Street Delmar, MD
For Young Adults Feeling a Call to Ministry… Here’s an event for you! Exploration creates sacred space for young adults, ages 18-26, to be in meaningful fellowship, passionate worship, theological reflection, and practical workshops as they discern whether God’s call on their life is to ordained ministry in The United Methodist Church and what faithful steps they can take in response. For complete details, go to www.explorecalling.org/exploration
On August 10th 2019, over 150 guests gathered at Asbury United Methodist Church in Salis-bury, Maryland to celebrate and honor Alice Lorraine Carrigan, who turned 100 years old on August 9th 2019. Guests travelled from South Carolina, California, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, North Carolina, New York, Georgia, Delaware and Maryland.
Union United Methodist Church, of Delmar MD hosted the celebration in observance of the church’s 200th Anniver-sary of service to the Lord and community since 1819. Among those well-wishers, were family and friends, as well as Maryland State Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes, Wicomico County Council President, Robert Cannon, and Salisbury City Major, Jacob Day. Proclamations were pre-sented and a birthday card read from the National Office of the White House in Washington, DC.
Asbury fellowship hall was transformed into a picture of el-egance in green and white (her favorite colors). There was catered food along with music provided by the Union Gos-pel Group ministering some of her favorites and beautiful reflections from the community by retired Judge Norma Lee Barkley, family relative retired Judge Clifton “Jimmy” Gordy, granddaughter, Latoya Carrigan-Cook and son, Yancy Carrigan.
Other presentations were from Salisbury High Association. She is a graduate of the class of 1937 from the former Salisbury Colored High School. Union Church presentations were from ministries of the Jolly Timers, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men and Union Gos-pel Group. The church presented her with a beautiful blanket of pictures that displayed sepa-rate phases of her life with her siblings, children and grandchildren. She was also crowned as “Mother Queen” and presented a bouquet of beautiful white roses.
Mrs. Carrigan is a lifelong and now the oldest member of Union United Methodist Church. She is very active and supports the missions and ministries and serves the Lord in every aspects of her life. Alice spends her free time, reading, doing word search, and enjoying the companion-ship of her furry friend, Diamond, a Boston Terrier. She mostly enjoys having her family drop in from time to time, this brings her immense joy. She enjoys going to church even when she does not always feel her best, she presses onward to give God the glory for her many blessings.
When interviewed by WMDT-TV, she told them she was surprised at how many showed up to share their love with her. When asked what she contributes to her longevity, she smiled and said, “Loving God and minding my own business”. Although she will often speak her mind, she appreciates and loves all. She gave special thanks to her Pastor of the last nine years, Pastor James L. Young and First Lady Estelle Young.

Rev. Dr. Bernadette Beckett, Pastor of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury, MD, recognized a greater need for a support system for those grieving the loss of a loved one. She was determined to bring greater comfort and hope to those within the church, as well as the community. Dr. Beckett assigned Dr. Angela Dix to oversee the Grief Recovery Ministry. In turn, Dr. Dix discov-ered GriefShare, a 13-week video seminar designed to start the healing process of those walking in the grief journey. When she offered GriefShare, people immediately began to sign up. GriefShare is biblically sound and extremely helpful for those who need to travel the road of grief recovery. The truths and principles taught within GriefShare are amazing, but it is God who imple-ments His healing to those who are grieving.
GriefShare seminars are underway at Wesley Temple UMC beginning September 30th through January 6th with a team of 14 facilitators. From a personal standpoint the Wesley Team believes that GriefShare is not only biblical, but relatable in helping people heal in a progressively healthy way from the pain and sorrow of grief.
GriefShare is a network of 15,000-plus churches worldwide. The program is nondenominational and features strong biblical concepts for healing from grief.
There are three components to the GriefShare experience. The video seminar features some of the nation’s foremost experts on grief recovery who cover topics such as “Is This Normal?”, “The Chal-lenges of Grief”, “Grief and Your Relationships” and “Guilt and Anger”. Each seminar is combined with a small group discussion to allow group participants to talk about the content of the video semi-nar and about how they are dealing with the death of their loved one. The workbook affords those who are grieving to journal and to engage personal study that reinforces the weekly session topics.
GriefShare groups are led by compassionate and caring facilitators who have undergone grief and have productively re-established their lives. Each GriefShare facilitator understands in their own way the journey of grief because they have experienced a significant loss in their lives. Each facilita-tor walks along the path of every person who is grieving and praying for healing and restoration. New members can join GriefShare at any point during the 13 weeks. The only cost is a $15 work-book.
For more information, visit griefshare.org. You may also contact Dr. Angela Dix, Wesley Temple UMC Grief Recovery Ministry Director at [email protected] or call 410.449.2171.
