Welcome: - Discuss typical lesson, normal meeting place, class time and length - Exchange phone numbers, the importance of being on time, and calling ahead of time when you or the student are not able to attend the next class First Lesson: - Discuss the students past history, native country, travel, time in the U.S. (Use http://wikitravel.org. Enter your student’s country in "Take me to _______________________" prior to class) - Talk about your geographic history - Have your student talk about their family, and make a simple family tree (Use the Family Tree on page 2) - Talk about your family - Discuss the student’s goals for learning English - Have your student create a list of five objectives, writing as complete English sentences as possible (“I want to learn...”, or “my Goal is to ...”) - Discuss Homework and the Journal (show the attached journal examples) (Recommend giving the student a small diary/journal book to use) Model Reading: - Pick out a book to read, depending on your student’s level (examples for Literacy Level and Level 1 are “Who Moved My Cheese” and “The Cricket in Times Square.” For higher levels, try “The Story of Corn” or “Salt, A World History”) Homework: - Journal (see attached samples that cover multiple levels) - Watch CNN English and write short sentences on 2 news stories (Note: This lesson plan may take two or three classes to complete.)

Welcome: - Review Journal, read aloud, make minor corrections - Read aloud the two CNN sentences and make minor corrections Lesson: - Start Beginners Level 1, Class 1, first two pages (have your student read both the English and Spanish). Have the student read multiple times. - Start the appropriate part of Laubach Reading 1 Skill Book if your student is a very basic Literacy Level student, and skip the next two items *. - Start with page 1 in ExpressWays 1 (or another tutoring book of your choice, such as Side by Side, English No Problem, Future, etc.) - Or, start with the Oxford Picture Dictionary and the Workbook, either the low beginner or the high beginner. Model Reading: - Book Name (the tutor should read for 10 to 15 minutes) Next Homework: - Journal (see attached samples that cover multiple levels) - Complete the ExpressWays 1 Test-Package, Exit 1 Test (Skip this item if you have a very basic Literacy Level student *) - Watch Cartoon Network and write a short sentence about one cartoon * Once your student is able to understand and read the English alphabet and
know vowels, then stop using the Laubach Reading 1 Skill Book and begin using Expressways or other similar tutoring material.

Welcome: - Review Journal, read aloud, make minor corrections - Read aloud the one cartoon sentence and make minor corrections - If used, review the Exit 1 Test, making and explaining corrections (use the results as a guide to future lesson materials) Lesson: - Review Beginners Level 1, Class 1, first two pages (have your student read just the English several times.) Proceed further in Begin Class 1 - If used, review the appropriate parts of Laubach Reading 1 Skill Book and proceed further in the book and skip the next two items - Review ExpressWays 1 (or another tutoring book of your choice) and proceed further in the book - Or, review the Oxford Picture Dictionary Workbook & proceed further. Note: Judge how much your student can cover during the lesson part of your tutoring that will still allow time for Model Reading and discussion on the next homework. Adjust, if needed Model Reading: - Book Name (the tutor should read for 10 to 15 minutes) Next Homework: - Journal (see attached samples, page 10, that cover multiple levels) - ExpressWays 1 Activity Workbook, page 1 (or other tutoring workbook) (Skip this item if you are using Laubach Reading 1 Skill Book) - Give your student a section of a newspaper. Have them find three words that they do not understand.
