5through my designs, i seek to create interior experiences using color, texture, natural light, and architectural elements. i believe that great design is created through the collaboration of architecture and interior design; they are not mutually exclusive. great exteriors are achieved through thoughtful and functional interior spaces and vice versa. i want to create sustainable interior spaces where nature is the inspiration for human focused design. when designs are based on natural ideas, both humans and the earth experience increased benefit and value from one another.

the over arching idea for this senior thesis project was to design not only the interior of a space to conform to a set of rules written by humans, but to design a new space for animals where both the interior and exterior are products of each other, and their relationship is intertwined with the use of the landscape so that each area is thoughtfully conceived and implemented in a deliberate manner that is sustainable as well as innovative. the intent was to design not from merely the viewpoint of the
human that occupies and uses the space, but to actively incorporate the perspective that an animal might have as they are visiting, living in, or being treated in these spaces.

this project seeks to completely integrate the visions of both parties that will be occupying the space, an innovative design idea that if successfully executed, will maintain better emotional and physical well-being of all living things within the building.

separate entrances, waiting spaces, exam rooms, grieving rooms, and medical wards are provided for cats and dogs. this guarantees that they will not cross paths in this high stress environment.
the circulation of the animal hospital is a necessity for safety protocol and ease of visibility, mobility, and also disease mitigation. short, direct passageways are the most economical and safest approach to effective and timely medical care.
the treatment area is designed to be the central hub of the hospital allowing for direct access to all of the peripheral medical spaces in addition to the patient areas. having the treatment area in teh center allows visual and audible connections between staff and animals at any given time.

creating dog and cat centric facilities will not only reduce the stress and improve the welfare of the animals, but it will increase the likelihood that healing will take place for sick animals and that permanent homes will be found for those in the shelter.

the animal relinquishment drop off location is set aside from the main entrance allowing for isolation. the independent clinic gives the shelter the ability to isolate incoming animals and provide routine check ups, vaccinations, and de-worming on the animals housed in the shelter. it also ensures that every animal that leaves the shelter is spayed or neutered, if of proper age, to further help to decrease the homeless pet population.
puppy housing rooms are important and safer in that the dens are specifically designed for adolescent dogs. housing up to three puppies from a single litter, they keep noise and stress levels down by restricting visual access of the puppies.
indoor play and meeting areas are important for socialization with other animals and people. play areas allow for exercise even days with bad weather, and meeting spaces give potential adopters a chance to meet with individual animals one on one.
outdoor access for both dogs and cats is an important feature of this hospital and shelter. exterior stimulation, daylight, and natural ventilation all keep animals healthy and happy. the public park area also fosters increased community involvement.
increasing rates of successful adoptions and lowering the homeless pet population begins with educating the community. by providing a space for lectures, presentations, and workshops, the shelter and hospital can function as a learning environment for the public.

dutch doors provide a safer option for smaller and larger dogs alike because they cant squeeze under them. frosted glass on the bottom prevents visibility lowering stress and nosie levels. indoor/outdoor dog runs give full autonomy to the animals without hindering accessibility to potential adopters.
cat pods are composed of 3 cubes each which give single cats ample room for sleeping, eating, playing, vertical stretching, and using the litter box without one area overlapping into another. one frosted cube provides privacy while clear glass provides visibility for potential adopters. manual sliding doors to separate the cubes into two areas allow for easy cleaning.

located in the vibrant business district of tokyo, japan, the shinjuku grand art hotel displays the convergence of luxury with artistic modernism. angled walls combined with expansive facades allow guests to experience the changing light and shadows that occur in the city between sunrise and sunset. asymmetrical balance and wabi sabi design principles lend to the traditional japanese cultural aesthetic. bright pops of color and clean, intentional lines reflect the contemporary art culture and introduce form and movement throughout the spaces. unobstructed floor to ceiling curtain walls force the circulation to the exterior, allowing guests to experience the dynamic japanese lifestyle. the juxtaposition of serene natural elements and textures with the large bold art pieces and oversized sculptural forms creates an environment that is both stimulating and calming. this modern art hotel provides a sophisticated yet exciting stay for any guest.

steel structures are c o m p l e m e n t e d with florescent tube lamps to create these minimal abstract branch sculptures
coated steel cables covered in colorful rope emulate the growth of a tree through the changing densities of cables. just as trees branch out and become less dense as they grow taller, so too do these cables. hanging florescent tube lamps and transparent resin prisms act as leaves for this nature inspired mobile structure.

the pineapple was created using planer plywood pieces. i deconstructed the fruit into its basic geometric elements and then fitted the pieces together allowing for light and air to penetrate the sculpture.
the champagne chair was created from the cork and the wire cage of a single champagne bottle. after grinding up the cork, i used resin in order to mold the cantilevered seat and back to fit the human form.

out of balance is a wine bottle casegood that was desinged on an assymetrical slant with accute attention to joint detail and angled geometry
the carpus chair and table were designed for the broad street studios front entrance lobby. designed for groups of 3, acute geometry and simple traditional danish design principles collide in the structures. simple geometric shifts througout the pieces give it a distinct look while still borrowing from the surrounding architecture.
