something, a tribute
On Veteran’s Day we pay homage to those who have fought in a war to defend our country.
4. Incessant Adj.Continuous, endless, without stopping
We called the plumber to come fix our kitchen sink after a week of incessant dripping.
5. Jettison V. To throw something overboard, discard
When the cruise ship sprung a leak in the hull, the captain told the crew to jettison everything that was not totally necessary until help arrived.
6. Laud V. To praise someone
The coach decided to laud the team even after they lost the game because they never let up their efforts to keep going.
7. Magnanimous Adj.Very generous, kind, or forgiving
Dr. Kenworth’s donation to the kidney wing in the hospital was a magnanimous gesture that later helped many people suffering from kidney disease.
8. Nuance N. A slight difference in meaning, feeling,
tone, or color
The nuance of color in the autumn leaves makes the mountains come alive with a brightness like fire.
9. Pacifist N.Someone who refuses to perform military service or take part in war
During the Viet Nam war there were many pacifists who went to Canada to avoid being drafted into the war.
10. Penchant N.A strong liking for, attraction to
Sari has a penchant for biking, so she decided to enter the 100 mile race to raise money for Cancer research.
11. Sardonic Adj.Humor tinged with sarcasm and contempt
Writing a sardonic note to your boss may not be the best way to persuade him to change your late-night work schedule.
12. Static Adj.Not moving or changing, fixed in a position
Most characters change and develop over the course of a novel, but some remain static throughout.
13. Superfluous adj. More than necessary
When cleaning your room, it is best to get rid of the superfluous items so there are fewer things to have to keep picking up off the floor.
14. Unprecedented Adj.Never happened before, first of its kind
Because landing on the moon in 1969 was an unprecedented event, the whole world watched in amazement.
15. Verbose Adj.Using too many words
His essay was returned with instructions to make it less verbose and to use more powerful words.
Practice Assignment• For each word, write a sentence using that word to portray
something about The Crucible. Each sentence must contain at least 10 words and explain some concept in the story. Circle the word in the sentence.
• Example: In Salem, neighbors would fulminate with each other to the point of actually calling them out as being a witch.
