Amazing Words

Word Analysis• Use context clues to help you figure
out what a word means.
Idioms• A phrase or expression that has an
accepted meaning outside the literal meaning of words.
• For example, when we say a job is “a piece of cake” we mean it can be done easily. It doesn’t have anything to do with cake.
Idioms• In the story “Play Ball” I read that a
great player has “a style that stands out”.
• What does “stands out” mean here? Does it have anything to do with standing?
• It means the style is better than or different from that of other players.
READAs we read Satchel Paige, be on the look out for idioms.
