Introduction This summary provides an alphabetical listing of the schools for which Sheffield City Archives holds the following types of records:
Admission Registers
Log Books
Governors’ Minutes
Attendance Registers
Photographs
Other Records (including punishment registers and correspondence)
In all cases reference numbers and covering dates are included. Access The information contained in Log Books, Admission Registers, Punishment Registers, Attendance Registers and Governors’ papers is subject to access restrictions of 75 years. Please consult a member of Sheffield Archives staff for guidance on how to access information contained in these records. Admission registers record date of admission (and in some cases re-admission), a child’s full name, date of birth, address, the name of a parent or guardian, the last school attended, whether they were exempted from religious instruction, the date of their last attendance and the cause of leaving. These registers can also include an index of pupil names. There is often duplication between volumes. It is common, therefore, for covering dates to overlap. Sheffield school admission registers up to 1914 can be searched on the Find My Past website http://www.findmypast.co.uk/ Log books record day to day occurrences in the life of the school. These include such matters as admissions, staffing (new appointments, transfers), pupil and staff absences, accommodation, general housekeeping and administration, special events, school inspections and other visits, outbreaks of illness, holidays, timetables and changes in opening times, annual reports and monthly class examinations. Punishment registers record the date, name of child, offence, how punished, class number and in some cases the signature of the teacher. These registers often only cover certain classes in the schools, leading to overlapping dates. Governors’ minutes tend to record the appointment of governors, as well as administrative matters such as staffing issues, local education authority policies and some matters relating to pupils (e.g. exclusions). A headteacher’s

Further minutes not included in this list, for various First, Middle and Secondary schools, are referenced CA521/1-59, CA626/14-16 and CA672. These cover the years 1947-2002. Attendance registers are only held at Sheffield City Archives where no admission registers for the school have been deposited. Entries in the summary list referred to as Other Records can include photographs, architects’ drawings, administrative files (containing, for example, development plans, performance reviews and inspection reports), minutes of staff meetings, newspaper cuttings, newsletters and school magazines.
