Music in Vienna
● Vienna treated music as less of an art form as the other cities we have observed thus far, seeing it more of asimple form of entertainment
● Instrumental music had a difficult time gaining any sort
of popularity from the masses● Higher class enjoyed private concerts by the likes of
composers like Schubert, while dance musicovershadowed any chance of instrumental music
gaining a significant amount of popularity● Folk Music: what is it? What instruments fall into thecategory of 'Folk' instruments? Who is making theseinstruments?

Where did Folk Music have a place in Vienna?
Questions I asked myself before research
● What sort of instruments were involved in Viennese folkmusic?
● What do these instrumentations tell us about the folkmusic community in 19th century Viennese
● Who was performing this music?● Almost more importantly, who was listening?● Where was folk music performed?
● What can we infer from this?

● Schrammel brothers Johann and (the less popular) Josef were both born inVienna and trained as violinists through the Vienna Conservatory

What I have learned/gathered
● Viennese music is not all Strauss waltzes,Mozart arias, and Beethoven symphonies
● Viennese folk music has evolved over time
from a clash of music styles● Emerged as a result of the industrial age,
when tens of thousands of people from ruralareas flocked to the slums of the larger citiesin Vienna

How does this relate toSchrammelmusik?
● My main focus of research now centers on how/whySchrammelmusik developed over the course of the 19thcentury and how it was important/meaningful to the peopleof Vienna
● People were not just flocking in from rural areas inVienna--other countries include Bohemia, Moravia, andSlovenia
● Immigrants from these countries brought tunes from theBalkans, Alpine yodels and other foreign musical
concepts. These mingled in with the popular Viennesewaltzes creating a unique and diverse mix of style
● Through listening, it is my idea that Schrammelmusikemerged as a style to facilitate the interests of all of theseimmigrants

How does this relate toSchrammelmusik? (continued)
● The people listening to this music were people who wereliving in the slums. Schrammelmusik was often performed inwine suburbs and drinking taverns
● The Schrammel brothers gained so much popularity because
they combined the musical interests of different styles fromthe immigrants into a completely new style of their own
● The instrumentation-- G clarinet; Gypsy/Romani influence● Some traditional Viennese musical ideas present in
schrammel quartet through use of violins/fiddles and an
accordion (influence from Balkan music?) in the absence of a G clarinet
● Contraguitar/Schrammelguitar--completely unique toSchrammelmusik

Next steps in my research
● Continue search for more written materials● More listening--Schrammelmusik and other
potential influencing music styles (especially
recordings of Gypsy/Klezmer music)● There is even a Klezmer group in
Williamsburg that I plan on contacting tohopefully learn a bit of history
● Read that the Schrammel brothers were alsoable to attract high society--why?
