GAS COMPRESSORS

Acmevac have designed and developed gas compressors for vacuum conveying of explosive gases, such as hydrogen and hydrocarbons. These compressors incorporate a turbine blower/exhauster housed in a leakproof enclosure. The blower consists of an impeller mounted directly on a motor shaft which rotates in a stator-cum-compression chamber having very fine clearances between them. The impeller is rotated at a high speed. Both the suction and discharge openings are located at the outer

periphery of the stator to reduce impedance to air f low thereby developing vacuum and pressure. Since the impeller rotates with no contact between itself and the casing, there is no friction and no lubrication required. The gas delivered is completely oil-free with no contamination. These compressors are available in capacities ranging from 40 m/hr to 500 m/hr, pressures up to 550 mbar and vacuum up to 500 mbar.

ENERGY SAVING HYDRAULICS

Lifting and steering hydraulics in electric counterbalanced forklifts are conventionally operated by independent motors. Though this has been the norm for decades, the system is not very energy-efficient because the pumps operate in ON/OFF manner, delivering either the full oil f low or none. When full f low is not required the excess is returned to the tank, wasting energy and wearing the motor and pump. Godrej Material Handling has recently introduced a new hydraulic system, which includes an electronic controller. The controller operates the motor at the optimum speed to deliver just the amount of oil demanded by the operation whether its lifting, tilting or steering. This energy saving system gives about 10 per cent more operating time on each battery charge reduces power consumption and defers battery replacement. Further, the operator has superior control of all hydraulic operations and this translates into higher productivity and safer handling.

Linear Technology Corporation has announced the H-and MP-grade versions of the LT3757 and LT3758 wide input range DC/DC controllers for boost, flyback, SEPIC and inverting power supply applications. These devices are capable of generating either a positive or negative regulated output voltage with a single



device by having two internal voltage feedback error amplifiers and reference voltages. The H- and MP-grade versions are tested and guaranteed to operating junction temperature ranges from -40C to 150C and -55C to 125C, respectively. Model LT3757 operates with an input voltage ranging from 2.9 V to 40 V and model LT3758 operates over a 5.5 V to 100 V input voltage range. These devices achieve efficiencies up to 96 per cent, making them well suited for industrial, automotive, military, medical and telecom applications. THROUGH-BEAM SENSORS

Proximon Controls offers through-beam sensors with amplif ier unit. These sensors consist of two devices, ie, a light emitter and a light receiver. The two devices are kept apart facing each other. Gallium-aluminium-arsenide-luminescent diode integrated in the transmitter sends pulses of light in the infrared range, which is invisible to human eyes. The receiver opposite the transmitter receives these rays. Sensing is achieved when these rays are interrupted by the object. Some of the advantages include: large sensing distance is possible as the emitter & receiver are kept opposite to each other; suitable for precise detection of large as well as small objects; and repeatability & indexing precision are not impaired even if the object surface or background is reflecting.
