Musical roots stretch deep and wide, twining people together in a shared experience of culture and heri-tage. Members of the Deep Roots Music Cooperative are twined together by the fun of sharing music. Our mission is to create meaningful connections between cultures, community groups, artists, and audiences by offering music-related events, programs, and the annual Canadian Deep Roots Music Festival. And while we’re at it – have a lot of fun!

Deep Roots is always looking for new members and vol-unteers. We invite you to be a part of the Cooperative and Festival. W hen you become a member of the Deep Roots Music Cooperative, you can sit back and relax for you will be among friends – especially if you like music, have a sense of humour, and like being around people who enjoy a good time. All year long our Programmer, Dave Carmichael, has been planting the seeds for this bumper crop of talent. Lisa Hammett Vaughan, our Festival Coordi-nator, and her team have been working diligently to ensure that Dave’s work is ready for you. GREEN FESTIVAL

A Message from the Green TeamDeep Roots prides itself on being a “Green” festival. This means that not only do we sort our waste accord-ing to Nova Scotia’s waste management strategy, but we work to reduce our waste too – especially when it comes to plastic. We encourage our volunteers and performers to bring their own reusable water bottles and you can too! Festival-goers can refill water bottles at water stations that are available at various venues. Of course, there are recyclable cups available for your use as well. Green Team personnel will be on hand (often nearby one of our many recycling stations) to an-swer any questions you might have about staying GREEN at the Deep Roots Music Festival!

Smoke-Free CampusAcadia University is an entirely tobacco-free campus. The use of any tobacco products is prohibited. Those who wish to smoke are asked to leave the property in order to do so. There are areas on the edge of campus where you may smoke in accordance with the Town of Wolfville regulations. We greatly appreciate your coop-eration and understanding concerning this matter.

PARADE INFORMATION

The Fresh Beats Rhythm Parade!Our Saturday noon-time parade is the heart of the Deep Roots Music Festival. Whether you’ve participated in one of our morning workshops or not, please join our Fresh Beats Rhythm Parade. Gather with us at the Festival Tent at Clock Park at 11:35am. Perhaps you’ll be wearing a hat you’ve just made, or holding a rhythm instrument you’ve just created, or donning a Wee Giant costume you’ve just borrowed! At NOON the parade, in all its glorious noise and colour, will begin.

Parade Route: Leaving from Clock Park, the parade proceeds east on Main Street, then turns left and goes north on Central Avenue. We turn left again moving west on Front Street. A final left and a hop, skip, and a jump south on Elm Street will end us back at Clock Park and the Festival Tent. Following the parade please stay in costume and gather for a GROUP PICTURE. There will be music at the Festival Tent all afternoon long, so plan to stick around!

Take part in dancing, singing, hat making, or any other participatory workshops listed here. Enthusiastic facilitators and interactive performers will help your sense of creative community collaboration Take Root!

FRIDAYUncommon Common Art (4pm - 6pm, President’s Field beside Festival Theatre)This Community Environmental Art Project invites you to help collect materials (sticks, leaves, grass, etc.) and use them collaboratively in the creation of a piece of artwork that will be left for others to find and eventually for nature to take away.

SATURDAYHat, Rhythm Instrument & Mask Making(10am, Festival Tent)Volunteers from the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts will provide materials and instruction for making hats and masks to wear, and rhythm instruments to jingle, pound, and shake in our Fresh Beats Rhythm Parade.

Harmony Singing Workshop (10am, Festival Theatre)Let your vocal cords begin the day with a wonderful workout. Join festival performers Kim Harris, Durham County Poets, Sin & Swoon, and Donna Holmes for a singing experience you’re sure to enjoy.

Puppetry with Monika Wildemann andWee Giant Theatre (10:30am, Festival Theatre Lobby)Learn to manipulate these enormous puppets and experience the thrill of artistic collaboration as we bring to life Wee Giant Theatre’s wonderful larger-than-life characters. Costumes, masks, wings, and crowns will also be available to wear in the parade.

Kids PLAY Music! (10:30am, Wolfville Baptist Church) This is a super fun session designed for children under 7 years (and their adults) in which they will sing, dance, and play rhythm instruments with Marilyn Manzer and Shannon Lynch.

Drum Circle with Djugdjug Ensemble (11am, Festival Tent)Bring your own hand drum and a chair and join the circle. Some drums will be provided.

All-Ages Rhythm & Percussion Prep for Parade(11:35am, Festival Tent)Bring your own drum or a rhythm instrument that you’ve just made and join us for a short workshop that will help you prepare for the Rhythm Parade which begins at noon!

Thanks to a partnership with Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, and a sponsorship from Boston Pizza, Los Angeles based songwriter Andy Stochansky will be Deep Roots’ first Artist-in-Residence for September 23-27. Ross Creek is providing Andy’s accommodations as well as collab-

orative work space for him to write with some of our other Deep Roots performers including Matt Andersen, Kim Harris, Amelia Curran, and Ian Janes.

Study old-time banjo and guitar with Kim Barlow and Old Man Luedecke, or songwriting with Heather Kelday, or fiddle and mandolin with Dennis Robinson. This 3-day camp, held in Wolfville, will reinvigorate you musically (from beginners to seasoned pros) and help you connect with a unique creative community. Sessions run from 12:30pm to 3pm, with slow jams from 4pm to 6pm each day. The Music Camp will feature a concert on Saturday morning (10am) at the Al Whittle Theatre.

In cooperation with the Acadia University English Department, this seminar is open to the public and FREE. Dan discusses his creative interaction with the work of New Brunswick author

David Adams Richards and the process of composing songs that reflect another artist’s vision while remain-ing true to his own voice.

Terry KellyWe Can Do Anything

Terry will share his presen-tation – designed to inspire students to overcome real or imagined disabilities, be caring, and have respect for oneself and others – at several Annap-olis Valley High Schools. Terry

is an award-winning singer, songwriter, and entertainer. He has also received the Order of Canada and was a member of the Canadian Track Team that competed in the 1980 Paralympics, distinguishing himself as the third blind person in the world to run the mile in less than five minutes. Through stories, humour, songs, and a relaxed energetic interaction with students, Terry Kelly proves that a belief in oneself is the key that will open doors to a rewarding and successful today and tomorrow.

VALLEY ARTS AWARD FREE SHOWS & WORKSHOPS

2015 Valley Arts Award winnerThe Valley Arts Award is pre-sented each year at the Deep Roots Music Festival to honour someone who has worked for the development and/or the promotion of the arts in the Annapolis Valley, and has made

a significant long-term contribution. Aylesford singer/songwriter Hughie McDonell is this year’s recipient of the Valley Arts Award. His bouncy “Shopping at Frenchy’s” song and his tribute to the late Harley Law-rence underscore his popular blend of finely crafted, heartfelt, and easy-on-the-ear compositions.

Hughie had a busy summer since he is currently de-voting himself full time to music. He performed at the Kingston Steer BBQ, the High Tide Festival in Harbour-ville, a concert in Auburn, and travelled to Quebec and Ontario for concerts. Hughie’s back-up musicians de-scribe him as a dedicated performer, who writes songs about fundamental, grassroots topics. Like previous award winner Chet Brown, Hughie often performs at benefit concerts.

His newest CD is entitled Last Mile Before Home and it displays his relaxed and down-to-earth style, which can switch from old fashioned to driving country. Hughie comes from a large, musical farming family in Cornwall, Ontario, where his father sang and played the guitar. Hughie loved music from an early age. He has been a Maritimer for some time and raised his three children in the Valley.

Over the years, Hughie has opened for such artists as Valdy, John Allan Cameron, Natalie MacMaster, and Lennie Gallant.

Al Whittle Theatre (450 Main St) Built in 1911, the building boasts a turquoise and yellow “Acadia” sign that, like Al himself, has become a town of Wolfville icon.

Acadia University (Main Street) Founded in 1838, Acadia University has a long tradition of academic excellence. Our Thursday Night concert takes place in Convocation Hall (the University’s main pillared build-ing). Acadia is also hosting our Artists@Acadia seminar in the Vaughan Memorial Library at the Beveridge Arts Centre.

Old Orchard Inn’s Heritage Barn (153 Greenwich Rd South)This unique structure was built in recognition of our area’s agricultural history. Fashioned from barn timbers and lumber, the building features over 2700 square feet of floor – perfect for our late night dance parties!

With a swinging guitar rhythm, doghouse bass slaps, smashing guitar solos, and lightning quick banjo and mandolin lines, The BackYard Devils hammered down their own sound in an old-fashioned style, just like the brothers had planned. Their self-titled first album (2011) won three 2011 Music NB Awards. Their second album (2014) is called Honky Tonk Heartbreaker.

Sylvia Tyson became one of the music world’s most recognizable and respected names in the early 1960s as half of one of the biggest music acts in the business. Great Speckled Bird, one of the 13 albums recorded by Ian & Sylvia, is acknowledged as

being evolutionary in the birth of today’s country rock sound. Sylvia’s distinguished solo career led to many critically ac-claimed albums during the 70s, and more recent endeavours include her much lauded one-woman theatrical tour, River Road & Other Stories. Sylvia is a recipient of the Order of Canada, is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and has garnered many other awards over the years. Monika Wildemann, Artistic Director, creates the puppets, props & costumes, all made from recycled materials. 2012 and fell in love with it. She has been an active member of the Dalhousie Swing Dance Society as a volunteer, an exec member, and a teacher ever since. Although she mainly does lindy hop, she also dances blues, salsa, bachata, and some tango.

Deep Roots Festival ClubWhen you buy a Deep Roots Festival Pass, you will have access to the Festival Club (set up at the Curling Centre near the Farmers’ Market) all weekend. Hours of op-eration are Friday 1pm - 7pm, Saturday 10am - 7pm, and Sunday 11am - 2pm. The Festival Club will be available to performers, volunteers, billet hosts, sponsors, and pass holders – your access badge gets you in the door. Use the Festival Club as home base while at the festival. Grab a coffee or a snack and maybe catch some behind-the-scenes music. The Festival Club is a great place to hang out and catch your breath.

First AidLots of Deep Roots volunteers are trained first aiders. We have emergency numbers and first aid kits at our venues. If you see someone in need of a first aider, go to the nearest Box Office, the Festival Club, or our Concessions table and ask for help.

Lost & FoundDuring the festival there are three Lost & Found stations where items may be collected – at Festival Theatre at our Concessions table, at the Festival Office, and at the Festival Club. If you have lost something, check one of our Lost and Found stations or call the office at 902-542-7668 with a description and contact info. We usually keep items for a full year, so if you lost something at Deep Roots last year, ask us about it!

Water Stations Bring along your water bottle and fill up at our water stations which can be found at the Festival Tent, the Festival Theatre lobby, the Convocation Hall lobby, and at the Festival Club. Our approach to water not only benefits the environment, but also lessens the burden on your wallet! However, water is not ‘free’ and we do want your support! If you wish, you can make a donation to Deep Roots at our water stations.
