It’s time to take a deep breath and dive back into the magazine after the
summer break which has been lovely and sunny although with plenty of
showers—coming at the wrong time I’m sure for some but great for the
garden. Especially there’s an abundance of fruit and hedgerow
blackberries. So it’s been a great time for me to restock the cupboards with
jam.
Many people are now getting back to work after relaxing holidays—some
in far flung places, others closer to home and perhaps like me, a holiday at
home. So now it’s just a matter of getting the brain back into gear.
I always think that September is a time of new starts with our youngest
children starting school for the first time and older children moving up to
senior school or college and some preparing to go off to university and
work places. It’s a big change all round which takes quite a bit of adaption
for parents as well.
As usual there’s lots going on in the villages with opportunities to meet
others and have a good time: a Music Festival (page 6), the Scarecrow
Competition (page 9), the POP UP Cafe (page 9), the Big Macmillan
Coffee Morning (page 3), Short Mat Bowls (page 23). As I write , I note
that it’s ‘Allotment Week’ which reminds me to say that there are
allotments available in both Burham & Wouldham (page 13).
This is a good opportunity to say some things about our free monthly
Church Magazine which is delivered to every house in Burham &
Wouldham by our wonderful volunteers. (Thank you as always). It is
financed by the advertising and we are grateful also for generous grants
from the parish councils. People are often ringing me to ask if I know of
local tradesmen. So if you would like to advertise, just get in touch— our
advertisers do report a very good response (page 2). Also it would be good
to receive items if you have anything for the magazine—e.g. about wild-
life, local history etc. etc.
Well, that’s it for my September Ramble and I might just about be getting
my brain back in gear again. Best wishes . Mary Davis, Editor

We hope that everyone has had a lovely summer. Here at Winchester House in
June we celebrated Care Home Open Day with a wonderful Garden Party.
Residents, their families and the local community came together and enjoyed
entertainment by Peter B and cream teas, Ice cream, Bucks Fizz and Pimms. We
are very grateful to everyone who came and showed their support, including
Mayor Roger Dalton, the Women’s Institute who presented twiddle mitts that
they have been knitting for our residents. The children from All Saints primary
School and members of the Over 60’s Club also came and enjoyed all the fun in
the sunshine.
Also in June we hosted the All Saints Church coffee morning, with an array of
delectable cakes provided by our amazing catering team. The morning was a
huge success and we’d like to thank all those who donated generously on the day.
All proceeds went to the Church Fund.
Congratulations to the entire team at Winchester House; we have been named as
a divisional winner in the 'Team of the Year' category for the 2017 Barchester
Care Awards, we shall find out if we are overall winners at a ceremony in
October. We have also been nominated for the British Care Awards for the same
category so watch this space for news later in the year!
We have now had the last of our Kingfisher boat trips which brought so much joy
throughout the summer and we look forward to booking more for next year.
Aside from the boat trips, we have had many outings including trips to Aylesford
Priory and The Fenn Bell Inn and Zoo.
Following the recent success of documentary series Old People’s Home for 4
Year Olds, we too would like to open our doors to parents with babies and
toddlers (0-5 years) for our new intergenerational group. We would love to hear
your thoughts on this new exciting project and would like to know if this is
something that would be of interest to our local community, you can contact Sara
or Sheila from the activities team on [email protected] or
call on 01634 685001.

Scarecrow
Competition!! We are going to have a scarecrow competition!
After the success of last year’s event, we would like to invite everyone in
Wouldham, as well as all the children and families connected to the school, to
take part.
The theme will be ‘jobs and careers’. You can be as creative with this theme as
you like. Each family or group can enter for an entry fee of £3.50 (£5 for
groups) Scarecrows can be displayed in gardens, or around the village, with
permission from the appropriate person. Those living outside Wouldham can
team up with friends who live here, and we will also make space available on
the school grounds. Please just let us know.
We will create a trail around the village, so that everyone can enjoy a ‘treasure
hunt’ to solve clues.
This will take place on Saturday 30th September.
Trails can be collected from the school playground, and cakes and
refreshments will be available for when you have finished. We have chosen
this weekend to tie in with the church harvest festival.
If you use Google to search ‘scarecrow festival’, you will find lots of sites that
show other villages who do this, and lots of pictures for ideas. You can even
find instructions on how to make a scarecrow! We don’t mind if your
scarecrow is made from straw, hay,
boxes, or anything else!
We are letting you know now, so that
you can start thinking about your ideas
over the summer holidays. We will
have entry forms available from the
start of the new term.
We hope you are all excited about this,
and will take part!
Thanks, The Friends of Wouldham

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School
.Happy New Year! It seems strange to be sharing this message now but as
we are about to embark on another school year it does seem appropriate.
Without meaning to sound ‘flash’ I’m writing this article whilst sitting in a
campervan, listening to a thunder storm whilst within the beautiful
Austrian city of Innsbruck. Holidays are really important and provide us
with opportunities to discover new things and new places and sometimes
overcoming difficulties and fears to get the most out of things. I noticed a
recent news report that said when a fair percentage of people go abroad
they are too afraid to try the language that they will just eat at MacDonalds
or go hungry! Some people will try to communicate by speaking English
with a foreign accent! Trying something new and different is what
broadens our minds and extends our experience which is what school
should be all about.
Over the past few days I have been lucky enough to visit many interesting
and beautiful places and have had to manage with languages that I have
very little experience of. We have met a small number of English speaking
people but have managed to survive and have even bought interesting
foods that we have no idea what they were!
The Church of England is keen to develop a vision for education and have
recently released a document setting out the main thoughts and aims. This
is being based on reference to the biblical text of John 10 verse 10 which
says “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” School
is about providing children with the opportunity to experience life and to
be able to live it to the maximum in the future. We are about much more
than a narrow curriculum focussed on just a few days of tests at age 11 and
so we start this new year committed to providing a ‘full experience’ for our
children, delivering the very best and aiming to let the children grow in
skills, knowledge, understanding of the world around them and in a love of
life which allows exploration of the world beyond the classroom. Learning
is an adventure and we aim to make Wouldham All Saints a place of
excitement!
Welcome to all of our new families beginning their adventure with us,
whatever age you might be. We look forward to getting to know you over
the coming weeks.
The new build is coming on well and really taking shape. We’ll keep you
updated on progress in the next month’s article. In the meantime, reflect on
summer experiences and how you might use them to help you live life to
the fullest! Auf wiedersehn! Bis bald!

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Welcome back after the summer break, I hope you all had a good
summer.
The 20 mph public health scheme for some areas of Burham is
progressing. The consultation finished mid-August, so we will have a
further update at the September meeting As a reminder the recycling site is for household recycling and not for
dumping rubbish (fly-tipping). There have been several incidents of fly
tipping in this area and warnings (together with invoices being raised for
the clear-up) have been issued by the local authority to the offenders.
Hopefully by now the official “No Horses” signs have been erected on
the foot path running alongside New Court Road. This foot path is a
designated pedestrian/cycle way. New bins are in the process of being
installed along the route as well.
As you are aware a new gate has been installed on the vehicle access to
the recreation ground. The previous one was wooden and with the
problems locally with unwanted visitors, a decision was made to replace
the previous one with a more robust and secure gate. Also bollards have
been installed around the village hall entrance to the recreation ground for
the same reason.
New signs “No dogs in the play area” are in the process of being installed
near to the play area gates. Please do not allow your dogs in this area as
they are prohibited. Whilst on the same subject, dog poo in the recreation
ground is on the increase. Please remember to pick up after you dog and
dispose of accordingly. The area is for all to enjoy and we have received
complaints that “deposits” are being left. PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE.
As the evenings start to draw in, let me know if any street lights are
not working properly.
Please ensure that any vehicles using the parish provided car parks
(Bell Lane, Church Street and Village Hall) are taxed, MOT’d
insured and in a road worthy condition. Vehicles which do not comply
can and will be removed. If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss,
just give me a call on 01634 685936, e-mail me on
[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings, normally
held the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for
Monday 25 September 2017, 7.30 pm The Parish Building, ROCHESTER

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL Next meeting, 5th September, 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All welcome.
There was an extraordinary meeting of the Parish Council on August 1st to
discuss the traffic problems in Wouldham.
We had many comments and suggestions from residents and a long list
was given to the PC to debate. Tracey Crouch MP and Dave Davis BCllr
attended the meeting. Minutes are on the PC website. Many residents
especially those who live on the High St want a 20mph limit which is
already under consultation. Tracey thought the place which could be most
improved was the Knowle Rd/High St/Hall Rd junction and has contacted
KCC about this area.
The phase 9 traffic plan which was first discussed in July 2015 is out for
consultation soon, this will involve the moving of double yellow lines,
adding some and removing others, moving the bus stop outside the
Foresters Arms so that the buses can manoeuvre more easily through the
village. This will help traffic flow.
The traffic surveys that the PC have arranged show the increase in the
traffic even before the village and the school have been finished. Sadly
most of the improvements the PC have asked KCC for have been refused
(signs, zebra crossings etc) but we will continue to pass on our concerns.
Please drive safely through and around the village.
POP UP CAFÉ. The ever popular pop up café is returning to Wouldham,
The dates are 20th September and 18th October 10.30-12.30. There will be
hot drinks and cakes or just pop in for a chat.
VILLAGE HALL. The village hall has had a spring clean, heating has
been installed in the toilet block, new electrics and sinks and white goods.
Our thanks go to the VH committee and especially Karen Aspinall for
co-ordinating it all. Contact the clerk if you want to hire the hall.
DEFIBRILLATOR. The new defib which was bought with money raised
in the village in memory of Christine Morris has been bought and is in the
Village Hall. The code to get in will be passed to SECAM until a box can
be purchased for the outside of the hall. Very well done to all concerned
especially Keith Churcher for co-ordinating this very worthwhile
collection.

SEPTEMBER in your Garden
‘Earth is here so kind, that just tickle her with a hoe
& she laughs with a harvest.’
September is often the time of the traditional Harvest Festival, when the fruits of
the labours of the year are at their most bountiful. Whether that be in fruits, veg,
flowers or foliage, hopefully the efforts of the spring and summer preparation
have reaped their rewards in your plots. If, like me, you’ve found the combination
of sun and rain a beneficial one, I’ve spent many hours preserving my fruit and
veg to enjoy through the winter, and perhaps for the occasional gift – Plum Jam
anyone ...?
There is still time to plant some Autumn flowering plants such as Asters,
Rudbeckia and Echinacea to take the garden through to winter. Its also a good
time to plant evergreen shrubs, Hebe’s or Euonymous (there are many varieties
available) are always firm favourites, or perhaps try Ilex crenata or Berberis
darwinii for their interesting foliage and berries. Ornamental grasses such as Stipa
tennuisima, Pennisetum or Festuca varieties are also good in less formal settings
and create wonderful sound and movement through a border.
September is still a hugely productive time, both in harvest terms but also in
opportunities to prepare for the winter and spring. If you have any remaining seed
heads on any tender perennials or annuals, then now is a good time to collect the
seed ready for next year. Choose a fine dry day, & snip off the seed heads into an
envelope [always choose paper rather than poly to help them dry & stop them
rotting] – leave to ripen in a dry place & they’ll be ready for sowing next spring.
It’s also a good time to divide herbaceous perennials that are getting too big – lift
gently with a garden fork to avoid too much disturbance to surrounding plants, &
either use a spade or two forks back to back to divide into smaller clumps, then
re-plant as necessary either back into the same spot or into alternative locations.
Other things to be doing in the garden now:
Keep dead-heading flowering annuals and perennials to prolong
flowering as long as possible.
Start looking at spring bulbs ready for planting out later in the month &
into October.
Keep harvesting summer crops, dig up potatoes, store onions for winter,
and check apples and pears – they’re ready when they come away
from the tree when you gently lift & twist them.
Consider taking up an allotment – Autumn is the ideal time to get started
ready for planting away in Spring.
