We all are living in a fast and mechanical world
where we have jam-packed activities lined up as routine. We
think we hardly get time for doing things. But friends that is not
the reality. Being in the industry for more than a decade, I can
assure and tell you that things fall in place where Time
Management is in practice. Having World Environment Day
crossed just a month ago, I am using this platform to request
and motivate my readers to create the habit of planting
saplings.
Trees are of great ecological importance. By taking
this small step, you are doing a great deed to our society as
well as you make your mornings pleasant and pleasing. I
sincerely appreciate all my readers who are already in
practice of planting saplings and others who are yet to start, I
urge them to take this as an initiative and start to plant a
sapling at least one in their house.
Let us all put our hands together and save our
mother nature.I sincerely appreciate the efforts of various
organisations like “India Japan lightings” & “Dalmia
Cements’ in this regard. Green investment for our
next generations' Yours greenly..A V Manivannan

If manufacturing capability ( Precision ) is increasing then why do we need to do measurement ? Mr. Adarsh H from Krysalis
Samples can be reduced accordingly. But, for setting approval and processcontrol purpose, we still need the inspection.
For a one-sided tolerance, MSA is applicable or not? Will it have normality ? Mr. S. Saravanan from Poclain Hydraulics Pvt. Ltd
Perfectly yes, what we are going to analyse is the Inspection process, butNOT the manufacturing process ! We can get a normal distribution on Onesided tolerance also !

Cost of Quality & Organization objectives

Improvements can be achieved by two means.
➢Firstly, the organization should cut down its losses arising out of rejections.
➢Secondly, it may invest in improving the controls on preventing the losses.
It would be interesting to understand the two means in greater details.
1. Cost due to losses arising out of rejections:
These costs are termed as “Failure costs”. They happen in any organization
internally as well as externally.
An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! 15
Internal failure costs : It is the cost of quality associated with
product failures that are discovered before a product leaves the factory.
These failures are discovered through the organization’s internal inspection
processes.
➢Waste: Performance of unnecessary work or holding of stock as a result of
errors, poor organization, or communication
➢Scrap: Defective product or material that cannot be repaired, used, or sold
➢Rework or rectification: Correction of defective material or errors
➢Failure analysis: Activity required to establish the causes of internal product
or service failureAn initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! 16
External failure costs: It is the cost incurred due to product failures after they
have been sold to customers.
➢ Warranty claims: Failed products that are replaced or services that are re-
performed under a guarantee
➢ Complaints: All work and costs associated with handling and servicing customers’
complaints
➢ Returns: Handling and investigation of rejected or recalled products, including
transport costs
➢ Repairs and servicing: of both returned products and those in the field

2. Costs arising out investing on controls:
The organization invests in establishing process controls through inspection,
testing and monitoring. It also invests in establishing quality systems, training
and development. These activities will prevent the non conforming products
getting produced. Thus there are two types of costs incurred by the organization:
➢Appraisal Cost
➢Prevention Cost
An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! 18
Appraisal cost: It is associated with monitoring and measuring activities related
to quality. These costs are associated with the suppliers’ and customers’
evaluation of purchased materials, processes, products, and services to ensure
that they conform to specifications.
❖Verification: checking of incoming material, process setup, and products against
agreed specifications
❖Quality Audits: confirmation that the quality system is functioning correctly
❖Supplier Rating: assessment and approval of suppliers of products and services
An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! 19
Prevention cost: It is incurred to prevent or avoid quality problems. These costs are
associated with the design, implementation, and maintenance of the quality
management system. They are planned and incurred before actual operation.
❖Product or service requirements: Establishment of specifications for incoming
materials, processes, finished products, and services
❖Quality planning: Creation of plans for quality, reliability, operations, production,
and inspection
❖Quality assurance: Establish implement & maintenance of the Quality System
❖Training: Development, preparation, and maintenance of training programs

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) can be leveraged to create value
across the employee hire-to-retire life cycle, the initial step could be to
create an automation index of all HR processes and transactions based
on the frequency of execution, degree of complexity and value vs cost
ratios.
Organizations to start consider RPA as the key element
shaping their business and people strategies.
The journey along this path will open up new
opportunities for scaling up the automation process,
elevate and transform HR back-office support room
to a new-age digital business technology centre.

5. Supplier Relationship
An organization applying the involvement of Supplier Relationship
Principle would be one in which people are:
➢ Identifying and selecting key suppliers on the basis of their ability to meet requirements without compromising
quality.
➢ Establishing supplier relationships that balance short-term gains with long-term considerations for the
organization and society at large.
➢ Creating clear and open communications.
➢ Initiating joint development and improvement of products and processes
➢ Jointly establishing a clear understanding of customers’ needs.
➢ Sharing information and future plans.
➢ Recognizing supplier improvements and achievements. An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! 23
6. Continual Improvement
An organization applying the involvement of Continual Improvement
Principle would be one in which people are:
➢ Making continual improvement of products, processes and systems an objective for every individual in the
organization.
➢ Applying the basic improvement concepts of incremental improvement and breakthrough improvement.
➢ Using periodic assessments against established criteria of excellence to identify areas for potential
improvement.
➢ Continually improving the efficiency and effectiveness of all processes.
➢ Promoting prevention-based activities.
➢ Providing every member of the organization with appropriate education and training, on the methods and tools
of continual improvement.
➢ Establishing measures and goals to guide and track improvements.
➢ Recognizing improvements. An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only ! 24

5. Indulge in small treats
❖ Indulging in small treats is a great way of relaxing your minds.
❖ Be it in the form of taking short breaks between work or snacking on
some dark chocolates or reading a humorous article or even stretching,
they all work wonders in beating the stress.
6. Create a Happy Mix Playlist
An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only 18
❖ It is known that music touches the strings in our soul. Pick up
tunes that clear your mind and put you in a good mood.
❖ Create a playlist and put together whatever music that puts you
in high spirits. You could play it while you're taking your morning
shower, making your breakfast, or commuting.

7. Sleep Well
8. Watch what you eat
An initiative from Sri Padhmam Consultancy & Training For free circulation only
❖ Eating foods that are rich in Vitamin B like almonds, almond
butter, spinach, broccoli, lentils, red peppers, snapper, salmon,
halibut, scallops, and shrimps can be very helpful.
❖ Adopting healthy eating habits can make a lot of difference.
❖ If you do not sleep well, your brain cannot function properly and even
the smallest problems can appear to be major irritants which will only
add to your stress.
❖ Studies have shown that humans require at least 8 hours of
sleep. This works in a cycle, as not getting sufficient sleep can lead to
stress and then too much stress can further lead to sleeplessness.

➢Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth - this can save 6 litres of water
per minute.
➢ Fix a dripping tap. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a
year.
➢ Fix water saving adaptors in your house (mist nozzle taps)
➢Always use full loads in your washing machine – this cuts out unnecessary washes in
between.
➢Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe. A hosepipe uses 1,000 litres
of water an hour.
