Bardolino Field DevelopmentPipeline Works Authorisation Application
Doc No. BARD-10-SH-0004
2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
The Bardolino Field is located in Block 22/13a with centre point drill location approximately
2 km east of the producing Howe field (block 22/12a), making it approximately 16 km east
of the Nelson Platform and approximately 162 km east north east of Aberdeen in a water
depth of 91 metres. The single well will be drilled from the edge of Bardolino block
(22/13a). It is an oil field with hydrocarbons mainly in Fulmar sand containing some 33.8
MMstb STOIIP (base case). The field will be produced to the Nelson production platform
connecting Bardolino to the existing Howe subsea infrastructure. The Howe infrastructure
has a design life to 2014, but assessments show that a 5-year extension is feasible.
The Bardolino ‘base case’ production profile is constrained at 10,000 stb/d. This profile is
based upon commercial agreement on allowable ullage in the Howe pipeline. Based on
the 10,000 stb/d case, the P50 FTHT is 122 deg C and the initial FTHP is 266 bara.
The project scope encompasses all work associated with drilling and completing a new
subsea well, and installation of the subsea architecture to facilitate production from this
well. The new Bardolino facilities will be designed for a minimum of 10 years field life.
A brief summary of the Subsea elements required for the Bardolino Development is as
follows:
• A 2 km 6” NB CRA production pipeline between the Bardolino manifold and the Howe
PTS
• A 2 km 3” NB carbon steel gas lift pipeline piggybacked onto the 6” production pipeline
• A single well slot subsea manifold, inclusive of two cooling spools, multiphase
flowmeter, and IOPPS system
• A Valve Protection Structure (VPS) near the Howe PTS, consisting of an actuated
isolation valve to enable remote isolation of the Bardolino field
• A new infield electro-hydraulic control umbilical for power/signal, hydraulic and
chemical transport from the Howe PTS to the Bardolino manifold
• A retrofitted Electrical Distribution Box (EDB) at the Howe PTS for power/signal
distribution
• Rigid tie in spools between the Howe PTS and Bardolino VPS, between the Bardolino
VPS and Bardolino pipelines, between the Bardolino pipelines and Bardolino manifold,
and between the Bardolino manifold and production tree
Shell U.K. E & P

• Control jumpers between Howe PTS and Bardolino VPS and between the Bardolino
manifold and production tree
2.1 Pipelay and Trenching
The new 6” NB insulated pipeline will be installed between the Bardolino drill centre to the
Howe PTS, a distance of approximately 2 km. The production pipeline material is
Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA) and will be insulated with a 5-layer PPF insulation coating
to provide for sufficient heat retention. The 3” carbon steel gas lift pipeline will be
piggybacked onto the production pipeline during installation and coated with a 3-layer PP.
The pipeline will be fabricated onshore, then laid from a reel using a dynamically
positioned vessel.
The pipeline and the umbilical will be trenched below seabed and both will be rock
dumped for upheaval buckling mitigation, stability, and to avoid potential issues associated
with fishing boats in the area. Pipeline target depth of lowering (from top of pipe) is a
minimum of 1.0 m below the natural seabed level. Deviations from the planned route will
be limited to a maximum of ± 5 m. Untrenched sections of the pipelines and umbilical -
namely leading up to and away from the trenches at each end will either be covered with
concrete mattresses or rock dumped to offer stability and protection from fishing activity
and dropped objects.
2.2 Crossings
There are no crossings.
2.3 Bardolino Manifold
The Bardolino subsea manifold shall provide the capability to tie-in production and provide
gas lift to the single Bardolino production tree. The manifold shall be located to facilitate
efficient rigid tie-in spool connections between the tree and manifold and between the
manifold and pipelines. The subsea manifold will include:
• Facilities for gas lift
• Multiphase flowmeter for product allocation
• Dual length cooling spool
• A subsea instrumented overpressure protection system (IOPPS).
• Future pig launcher connection
• A Subsea Distribution Unit (SDU) for power/signal and hydraulic distribution
Shell U.K. E & P
Bardolino Field DevelopmentPipeline Works Authorisation Application
Doc No. BARD-10-SH-0004
• A manifold subsea control module (SCM) plus mounting base (SCMMB).
• A subsea accumulator module (SAM) plus mounting base (SAMMB)
• Chemical injection point
In order to enable remote isolation of the Bardolino production pipeline a new 6-inch
actuated isolation valve shall be installed within a stand-alone structure near the Howe
PTS. The VPS shall have a dual header arrangement (one 8” NB and one 6” NB header)
to allow independent pigging of the Howe and Bardolino pipelines and shall be located to
facilitate efficient rigid tie-in spool connections between it and the Howe PTS and
associated pipelines.
2.4 Pipeline Tie-ins
Rigid spools will be used for all tie-ins and will consist of:
• 8” & 3” tie-in spools between Howe PTS and Bardolino VPS.
• 6” & 3” tie-in spools between Bardolino VPS and the Production and Gas Lift Pipelines
• 6” & 3” tie-in spools between Production and Gas Lift Pipelines and Bardolino
manifold.
• 6” & 2” rigid tie-in spools between Bardolino manifold and Bardolino production tree.
Production spools will be 25Cr CRA and gas lift spools will be carbon steel. Production tie
in spools shall be insulated to give the equivalent OHTC to the corresponding pipeline
All tie-in spools will be covered with rock and/or concrete mattresses to offer stabilisation
and protection from fishing activity and dropped objects.
2.5 Control System
Control of the Bardolino well shall be from the Nelson Platform via the existing Howe
umbilical and the new Bardolino umbilical, terminating with a UTA housed within the
Bardolino manifold structure. An electro-hydraulic chemical injection jumper will be
installed between the Bardolino manifold and the Bardolino well. Two subsea control
modules will be installed – one as part of the Bardolino tree for control of the tree and
downhole valves and sensors, and another in the manifold for control of the manifold
valves, multiphase flowmeter, and sensors.
The umbilical shall be laid in a separate trench from the pipelines. Untrenched sections of
the electro-hydraulic chemical injection umbilical and associated well jumpers, will be

Note 4
Notes:
1. The umbilical will be installed into a separate trench from the pipelines.
2. The finalised rock quantity can only be determined on completion of the Out of Straightness survey, this may result in
a marginal increase or decrease in the volume of rock dumped.
3. The number and location of mattresses required is directly dependent upon the quality of the trench. We are using a
ploughed solution to create the highest quality trench possible and minimise the number of mattresses. These
mattresses were not included in the Environmental Statement (W/3999/2008) because this scope has become known
following the Upheaval Buckling Analysis.
4. This rock quantity was not included in the Environmental Statement (W/3999/2008) because this scope of work has
become known recently following a drilling HAZID.

2. ROUTE SUMMARY
Results are presented on the Alignment Sheet (Appendix 2). Bathymetry results are
presented on the Bathymetry panel of the sheet and seabed features and obstructions are
presented on the Seabed Features panel. Shallow soils, geotechnical information and
sub-seabed conditions are presented on the Interpreted Profile panel. A brief description
of the route corridor is given below.
2.1 Bathymetry
At the proposed Bardolino Well location (KP0.00), the water depth is 91.0m LAT (302ft
MSL).
The water depth at the Howe Manifold (KP2.00) is 88.9m LAT (295ft MSL).
Water depth along the proposed pipeline route varies from a maximum of 91.0m (302ft
MSL) at KP0.00 to a minimum of 87.7m LAT (291ft MSL) around KP1.70. The seabed,
along the interpreted profile, shoals gently from KP0.00 to KP1.70 then gradually deepens
to the end of the route. Gradients throughout are less than 1 .
The difference between LAT and MSL, in the area, is 0.9m.
2.2 Seabed Features
Seabed sediments throughout the majority of the route survey corridor comprise a veneer
of sand with outcrops of clay and scattered cobbles and small boulders. Elsewhere,
seabed sediments predominantly comprise sand.
The high resolution sonar (500kHz) from the two offset centrelines indicates numerous
small boulders occur along the proposed route. The density of boulders, as shown in this
central area on the seabed features panel, is expected to be representative of the entire
route corridor.
The following objects, interpreted as boulders, with a height of 0.5m or greater, occur
within 50m of the proposed route centreline:
Description KP Height Offset Easting Northing
Object -0.014 0.5m 19m SE 583725 6388910
Object 0.688 0.7m 19m NNE 583095 6389221
Object 0.908 0.5m 37m SSW 582868 6389256
Object 0.942 0.6m 30m NNE 582865 6389331
Object 1.822 0.5m 10m SSW 582044 6389646
Shell U.K. Ltd Gardline Report Ref 7473.2/7556
EPT IT ED, European Data Acquisition and Management Volume 1

2.3 Sub-Seabed Conditions
Throughout the proposed pipeline route corridor, the shallow soils predominantly comprise
soft to firm slightly sandy clay with occasional gravel (Coal Pit Formation), to a depth in
excess of 5m sub-seabed, overlying dense to very dense slightly silty fine sand and very
stiff to hard slightly sandy clay (Fisher Formation).
Between KP0.501-KP0.680 and KP1.665-KP1.980, two small channel-like features sub-
crop the seabed. The channel-infill sediments are expected to comprise soft clay
(Forth/Coal Pit Formation).
2.4 Installation Constraints
The Sleipner to Easington Gas Pipeline (P0810) occurs 85m east-south-east of KP0.00
and crosses the survey area from south-south-west to north-north-east.
The Howe P1 Well, as-found height 7.9m, occurs 8m north-north-west of KP1.966.
The Howe Manifold, as-found height 5.1m, occurs at KP2.00.
The damaged and displaced Howe P1 Well Cocoon, 2.6m high, occurs 50m south-
west of the Howe P1 Well and has an associated seabed drag scar. In December
2007 the cocoon was visible to the immediate south-west of the Howe P1 Well, but
it had been dragged to its present position, possibly by fishing activity, by March
2008. It is possible that the cocoon could be further moved by further fishing
activity or seabed currents.
For additional information on possible obstructions, refer to the Hazard Notification
Summary (Ref. 2).
