※1 M 6.9, Metropolitan West, near-fi eld earthquake, in the winter at 18:00, wind velocity of 15m/sec. (Basic research for earthquake disaster measures, Shibuya City, 2006)
※2 M 7.3, Epicenter in the northern part of Tokyo Bay, in the winter at 18:00, wind velocity of 6m/sec. (Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Committee, 2006)
If the above earthquake occurs, it will cause an earthquake with a seismic intensity of nearly 6 in Shibuya City. In this situation, it will be diffi cult for us to stand up, and big furniture will move and topple. In many buildings the walls will crack, the glass of windows will break, and doors will not open. In some places the seismic intensity will be a little over 6; we will not even be able to stand up, unreinforced concrete block walls will fall down and many weak wooden houses will collapse.
There are three facilities for emergency water supply in Shibuya City. Their total quantity of water provided is as follows:
Yoyogi Park: 1,500 tDai-ichi Commercial High school: 100 tKageoka Park :100 t
Recovery days for lifelines throughout Tokyo:★Electricity 6 days★City Gas 53 days (No damage is assumed in Shibuya City.)★Water supply 30 days ★Drainage 30 days★Communications 14 days*Tokyo Regional Disaster Prevention Plans, earthquake edition (revised in 2007)
Earthquake Strike
・ Protect yourself・ Prevent fi res and extinguish them im-
mediately・ Cooperate with neighbors to put out
fi res and rescue others
If there is a threat of danger in your house or other placewhere you are, take refuge at a temporary gathering site (public school grounds, parks, etc.)
Temporary gathering sites are determined to be safe.
If your home is not damaged
Return home
Move to a temporary shelter
If your home is damaged
Ittoki shugo basho(temporary gathering site)
Hinan-basho(evacuation site)
Hinan-jyo(temporary shelter)
Niji-hinan-jyo (secondary temporary shelter) A temporary shelter for senior citizens or handicapped people.
A place where people gather temporarily to ascertain the extent of a disaster and to prepare for evacuation to an evacuation site.
An area where people move to in order to es-cape dangers such as spreading fi res caused by a serious earthquake.
A place giving temporary shelter to evacuees whose homes have collapsed, burned, or been otherwise seriously damaged by an earthquake or other disaster.
General Care Community Seseragi, Care Community Mitakeno-oka, Higashi Health Plaza, and such other places as special elderly nursing homes. 10 places in total.
In the case of spreading fi res caused by earthquakes, tem-porary gathering sites can be dangerous.・ The order to take refuge will
be given via Disaster Wireless Broadcast
Japan is an earthquake country. An earthquake could strike at any time. Will you be ready?? It will be too late if you are not already prepared when it occurs!Prepare for the possibility of an earthquake right away to pro-tect your own life, your family, and your home.First, you should check around your house, and talk about earthquake preparedness with your family. Participate in a disaster prevention drill in your area, and be prepared!
Areas where the entire destruction rate will be over 10%
Zones where the entire destruction rate will be over 30%
Zones with a concentration of buildings with large glass win-dows or signboards
Towns and streets where over 50% of the total number of buildings are wooden buildings
Priority Emergency Routes: roads which will have priority for mainte-nance and security in disasters
Border lines between towns
Please turn over for information about preparing for earthquakes.

The probability of the occurrence of a magnitude 7 earthquake in the southern Kanto area is 70% in the next 30 years and 90% in the next 50 years. (Source: The Earthquake Research Committee of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, “The General view of the national earthquake, forecast map,” 2006 revised.)Based on research of all of the buildings in Shibuya City and geological surveys, Shibuya City has produced a “Regional Risk Map” and a “Map of Shaking Probability” that indicate the risk of building-collapse. You can get the maps in the City Offi ce.
