The Westminster Assembly wrote the Shorter Catechism in 1647 as a concise question-and-answer summary of the biblical doctrines expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith. It was written as an instructional tool for use by the family and by the church. The words of this edition were adopted by the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in 1936 and by the Presbyterian Church in America in 1973.
