Both Side s Now :A Book Re vie w

D h illon K h osla, a fe m ale to m ale transs e xual, m ak e s th e de cis ion to stop living a false life and to tak e h old of w h o h e is . At th e age of 28, h e be gins th e trans ition from living as a w om an to living and be ing th e m an h e truly is. Both Side s Now is one m an’s journe y to th e raw ce nte r of s e lf-truth . It is a difficult journe y fille d w ith th e de licate dance of dark m om e nts of anguis h w ith brilliantly lit m om e nts of e piph any and e m e rge nce .

K h osla h as ce rtainly h it th e nail on th e h e ad. Alth ough th e e xpe rie nce of trans itioning from one ge nde r to th e oth e r is ve ry pe rsonal and uniq ue , th e re are ce rtainly th os e e le m e nts th at can be sym path ize d w ith by oth e r transs e xual m e n and w om e n. H is us e of e xce rpts from h is dre am s truly brings h om e th e constant m e ntal struggle involve d w h e n facing such a life ch ange . Th e w ant doe sn’t stop w h e n th e h e ad h its th e pillow . It only inte ns ifie s in dre am im age ry.

K h osla, a law profe s s ional in San Francisco, tak e s h is re ade rs dow n th e path from be ginning to e nd and le ave s no door off lim its re garding h is struggle s and trium ph s. I w as h ardly able to put th e book dow n for th e m e re fact th at so m uch of it spok e to m e . I could re late to th os e m om e nts of h ating th e ne e d for patie nce and for w anting to e m e rge fully in one fe ll sw oop.

Th e re ade r s h are s in h is e lation as h e w alk s th rough a day in th e life of D h illon th e m an, only to fe e l th e rolle r coaste r de sce nt of be ing addre s s e d as “m a’am ” as h e stands in h is s h irt and tie . Th is curving of th e story is w e ll done in th at it cre ate s a ve ry re al picture of th e q uick ris e and fall th at com e s in th e e arly days of trans ition.

W e ge t to e xpe rie nce along s ide D h illon th e struggle s to find love and acce ptance from th e w orld around h im . H is bigge st obstacle is h im s e lf. K h osla be gins to re alize th at a com m itm e nt to s e lf is ne ce s sary to be tte r unde rstand th e m any laye rs le ft to unpe e l in orde r to stand in truth .

O ne part of th e book I found e spe cially h e art-w re nch ing and touch ing is th e dance of acce ptance be tw e e n D h illon and h is m oth e r. It is not an e asy place for a pare nt to stand. Add into th e m ix th e pre -e xisting dynam ic of an adult ch ild trying to tak e care of h im s e lf and to run h is ow n life , and a m oth e r w h o only w ants to do w h at is be st for h e r one and only ch ild. H ow e ve r, h is m oth e r m ak e s h e r w ay th rough th e confus ion and finds h e r h e art re m ains alw ays and fore ve r com m itte d to h e r ch ild, re gardle ss of ge nde r. And in th e

proce s s, D h illon le arns th e balance be tw e e n space to grow and a m oth e r’s love .

I w ould re com m e nd th is book for e ve ryone . It brings into focus w h at it is lik e to be “trappe d in th e w rong body” and th e ste ps and stum ble s it tak e s to ge t from actualization to re alization.

Rape Aw are ne ss

Alth ough m ainstre am m e dia w ould ce rtainly h ave th e w orld be lie ve th at rape is a crim e th at h appe ns to only a sm all, s e le ct portion of socie ty, th at is ce rtainly not th e re ality. Th e victim /survivors of rape on th e ne w s and in th e te le vis ion spe cials are young, w h ite , uppe r-m iddle class w om e n. Th e y h ave a blonde -h aire d, blue -e ye d, pure air about th e m . And, w ith out doubt, th e y are h e te ros e xual. By no m e ans doe s th is dim inis h th e fact th at th e s e individuals can be victim /survivors of rape ; h ow e ve r, it doe s te nd to dim inis h aw are ne s s of th e fact th at anyone can be a victim /survivor of rape .

Th e pre vale nce of rape s com m itte d against som e one w h o ide ntifie s as le sbian, gay, bis e xual, transge nde r, or q ue e r is h ard to pin dow n. For th is

re ason, it m ay be fruitle ss to th row around pe rce ntage s and num be rs. According to Be ve rly Tue l in h e r article about rape and s e xual assault against le sbian, gay or bis e xual stude nts, it is safe to say th at le sbians, gay m e n, and bis e xual individuals m ay be pe rpe trate d “at rate s s im ilar to or h igh e r th an th e ir h e te ros e xual counte rparts.” Re s e arch re garding individuals w h o ide ntify as transge nde r is virtually non-e xiste nt.

It is also safe to say th at rape com m itte d against m e m be rs of th e LGBT com m unity is a ve ry re al crim e th at is large ly invis ible to gre ate r socie ty. Be yond a w h ole sle w of im m e diate proble m s re garding assum ptions of h e te ros e xuality, th e re are a ve ry diffe re nt s e t of ch alle nge s th at LGBT victim /survivors m ust face .

Many LGBT victim /survivors are force d to out th e m s e lve s in th e proce s s of s e e k ing h e lp and th e fe ar of outing th e m s e lve s is one th at k e e ps m any individuals from ge tting th e h e lp th e y ne e d. Be yond th e proble m of force d ide ntifying, th e re are m any m ore assum ptions m ade by large r socie ty th at are h arm ful to LGBT victim /survivors. A w om an w h o h as be e n rape d or s e xually assaulte d m ay e xpe rie nce doubt of h e r e xpe rie nce from pe ople w h o be lie ve th at a w om an cannot rape anoth e r w om an. An e ve n m ore h arm ful be lie f face d by m any victim /survivors of rape is th at th e individual m ust h ave w ante d it, or w ors e , de s e rve d it. Eve n th e be st re source s

available m ay s im ply not k now h ow to h andle LGBT ide ntifie d victim /survivors of rape be caus e such little inform ation is available .

H ow e ve r, all is not bad. Many place s, including our ow n Rape Education O ffice , provide re source s th at tack le th e uniq ue s e t of obstacle s face d by th e LGBT com m unity and continue to e ducate th e m s e lve s on th e s e is sue s. And pe ople are talk ing. Th is large ly invis ible crim e is be com ing m ore and m ore vis ible in large r socie ty. Th e re is still w ork to be done , but th e re are am azing pe ople constantly w ork ing to ch ange th ings.

No doubt w ill you s e e m any an am azing program put on by our ve ry ow n Rape Education O ffice and th e groups run out of it, including Stronge r Toge th e r Against Rape (STAR) and Me n Against Rape and Se xual Assault (MARS). Eve ryone is invite d to atte nd th e s e e ve nts, spe cifically a brow n bag discuss ion on th e inte rs e ctions of rape and th e LGBT com m unity on W e dne sday, Se pte m be r 13th from 12 – 1 in th e LGBT Re source Ce nte r.
