Medium Term Project Planning
Academic Year: 2017/18 Year group: 4 Term: Autumn 2017
Essential Question:
How can we make our world a better place?
REAL Project Outcome:
Mini project -. The children will collect recycled items from
home to create animals in their habitats.
Main project - Art Exhibition. Children will use their
recycled items to work together to display a project to show
to parents/carers in the KS2 Hall.
Enrichment (trips/visitors):
Openzone:
Beach trip: The children will go to Sandhaven Beach in
South Shields and will be ‘litter pickers’ in which they
will wear gloves to pick up any rubbish they see and put
into a nearby bin to demonstrate the importance of
looking after our environment.
Recycling Village: The children will take a trip to the
Recycling Village to gain an understanding of what
happens when we recycle our rubbish from the
household/school.

Environmental Hunt around the classroom: The children will
find hidden facts about the environment. They will then answer
questions to develop their understanding about the environment.
African drumming – Children will adopt the style of African
drumming.
Continents of the world - Children will learn the continents of the
world with a particular focus on Africa and about its climate,
inhabitants and culture. .
Celebrating cultures & diversity/events & dates:
Africa: Children will learn about the diverse culture of
Africa and of the languages spoken.
The children will learn about the colourful and vibrant
festivals such as The Gerewol Festival that takes place.
The children will use recycled materials/fabric to dress
up like the Mbororo men do in Africa.

ENGLISH
Reading – Use the text Cool to develop
comprehension skills. Children will answer
questions related to the text.
Writing
Stories set in an imaginary world
Persuasive writing – children will ‘box up’ their
ideas and then use this as a plan to write a piece
of persuasive writing e.g. To persuade Mrs.
Bland to allow Golden Time.
Spelling/Punctuation & Grammar- Through basic
skills daily, children will revisit to ensure their
written work makes sense.
Science
Living things: Grouping Living Things into their
species.
Looking at the dangers when living things are
harmed, for example when the sea is polluted by
humans. What effect this has on fish.
Art / D&T
Design Techniques: Create sculptures of houses
and huts using recycled items from home.
Observational Drawings: Create drawings of
animals native to Africa such as tigers.
Geography
Continents: labelling continents on a world map
Map reading: looking at symbols and how we read
maps.
Climate change: Looking at the climate of Africa and
how it has changed over the years.
Deforestation: Looking at tropical rainforests and what
happens to the land when a forest is removed or when
lands of trees are removed.
Pollution: What is pollution and how does it affect our
planet.
Recycling: Looking at the process of recycling.
Music
African Drumming- learn about the beat, rhythm and
tempo using African Drums with a designated Music
Teacher.
Singing- Learn African songs.

Developing movement skills.
Developing coordination.
Improving team skills and communication through
playing team games.
Computing
Developing and creating a game through Scratch.
Developing research skills.
Using various inputs and outputs to create sound and
video.
