Skill 1/17:Introduction to
First Aid
Learning Intention:
• To familiarise you with the purpose of First Aid in a wilderness setting;
• To practise how to approach a casualty.
Success Criteria:By the end of this session everyone should be able to:• State and understand the 3 ‘P’s of First Aid;• Approach a conscious and an unconscious casualty and check for vital signs.
Activities:1. Requirements of the Skills Section2. What is First Aid?3. ABC drills & approaching a casualty
1 hour/week over 3 months = Attend 15 out of 17 lessons
< 15 sessions & no catch-up = NO AWARD + NO EXPEDITION
Missed sessions can be caught up with Mr. Cant Weds 15.30-16.15

3 ‘P’s of First AID
Scenario:While walking alone in the mountains, Dave hears a clatter of rocks following by screaming. Upon investigation he sees a climber unconscious at the bottom of a crag. A second climber is dangling from a rope holding his heavily bleeding face. Nearby a woman is sitting holding her arm and a child is screaming.
Who is the most important person here?
ASSESS the situation: danger to you/others? Casualties? BREATHING: Are they breathing? Check/clear airway. CIRCULATION: Pulse?
