be contributing up to $51.5 million. The Province of Ontario will match the funding and the Regional Municipality of Halton will cover the remainder of the expected $158 million project.

DESIGNSplit stream treatment was the preferred wet weather management and primary treatment solution. This involved the design of:• anadditionalrawsewagepump;• twonewgrittanks;• expandedheadworkschannelsto

eliminatehydraulicbottlenecks;and,• anewsplitflowtreatmentchannel

and control system.

Conventional Activated Sludge process with Granular Media Filtration was the preferred secondary/tertiary solution. This involved the design of:• twonewaerationtanks;• fournewsecondaryclarifiers;• atertiaryfiltrationfacilityincluding

pumping,coagulation/flocculationandsupportfacilities;

• anewUVdisinfectionsystem;aswell as

•anewLaboratoryandOperationsBuilding to replace the existing.

CONSTRUCTION WORKSThe construction phase of the project began in September 2011 and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015.

Noise and DirtConstruction activities are scheduled from 7am to 7pm (Monday to Saturday) and are in accordance withtheCityofBurlington’sNuisanceandNoiseControlBy-law(By-law19-2003).Weeklystreetsweeping/cleaningalongLakeshoreRoadisscheduledtokeeproadwaysclearofconstruction dirt and debris.

TrafficConstruction activities will result in increasedvehicle/trucktrafficalongLakeshore.NewsignagealongLakeshorewillserveasareminderto the public regarding the increased traffic.

INTRODUCTIONThe Regional Municipality of Halton is upgrading and expanding the SkywayWastewaterTreatmentPlant(WWTP)toimprovethewaterqualityinHamiltonHarbour,andtomeetwastewater treatment capacity needs for the urban population in the City of Burlington.TheSkywayWWTPPhase2Expansionprojectwillproducetreatedwastewatereffluentthatmeets the highest national standards established by the Canadian Council ofMinistersoftheEnvironment,andthe Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for HamiltonHarbour-anAreaofConcern(AOC)intheGreatLakesBasin.

BACKGROUNDTheSkywayWWTPislocatedat1125LakeshoreRoadwithintheCityof Burlington. The plant provides wastewater treatment for the City of Burlington as well as a small portion of theTownofOakville.

A Schedule C Municipal Class EnvironmentalAssessment(EA)was completed in December 2009 to evaluate alternatives and determine the preferred design concept for expandingtheSkywayWWTPfrom118(millionlitresperday)MLDto140MLD.

TheSkywayWWTPExpansionprojectwas awarded the Green Infrastructure Fund,whichtargetsprojectsthatwillimprove the environment and lead to a sustainable economy over the long term. The Government of Canada will
