Convergence Culture:
This emerging mediascape is characterized by
• collective intelligence,
• affective economics,
• transmedia storytelling, and
• participatory culture.
Clay Shirky’s Magic Formula
1) A plausible promise -- "why”
2) An effective tool-- "how”
3) An acceptable bargain with the users--
You accept promise and use tools; what does the user expect and what does the creator expects from the user? (p. 260)
Open Source
• Anyone can add, edit, use, share, distribute• As long as you agree to do the same as the
previous users, i.e. keep the materials open source
• Affective economics-- do it for love, hobby, fun, sharing, giving-- earn money from customization and performance
• an open cultural commons that serves as a restraint against cultural enclosure;
• a concept of ecological intelligence that challenges the Western notion of an autonomous self, and takes into account Bateson’s concept of organism plus environment, and is systems oriented;
• a view of community that is living, democratic and participatory;
• a transformative philosophy of education.
