Report Overview
Smarty Ants is a comprehensive program of systematic, explicit, and spiraled instruction in foundational literacy skills thatpersonalizes learning to meet students where they are and accelerate early literacy success.
Smarty Ants was implemented by Idaho Community Grant for Smarty Ants during the 2019-2020 school year. The majority ofparticipating students completed the initial placement test in their first few sessions with this foundational reading program.
This report summarizes the usage and progress of Smarty Ants students in Idaho Community Grant for Smarty Ants. Theinformation provided within this report is based on student data collected during the 2019-2020 school year. For the purposesof reporting, students who received a manual adjustment were not included in this report. This report includes a population of231 students who completed an Initial Assessment, completed at least one lesson, and did not complete the Smarty Antscurriculum.

The solution examined in this study, Smarty Ants (grades PreK-2), is Achieve3000’s research-driven foundational literacysolution designed to ensure every student is on track for success from their first day of school. Smarty Ants combinespersonalized foundational skills instruction, independent practice, and embedded assessments all in an interactive, onlinelearning environment. Easily accessible, on-demand resources for teachers support targeted and purposeful instruction andprovide the flexibility to implement Smarty Ants in any blended learning model.
Assessments
When a student logs in to Smarty Ants for their first time ever, they will complete an initial assessment and subsequently beplaced into the appropriate Smarty Ants Scope and Sequence Level and Lesson for their ability. The Scope and Sequence tablescan be found in the teacher dashboard in Smarty Ants, under Training. Students in levels 1-11 will receive a mid-yearassessment in January. Returning multi-year users in levels 1-11 will take a back-to-school assessment when they log in toSmarty Ants at the start of every school year. Smarty Ants does not have a built-in end-of-year assessment.

Progress Summary by Grade
A student’s End of Grade goal is determined by the highest lesson of content corresponding to the student’s actual gradelevel. A student’s Academic Year goal is determined by the number of lessons in the content grade level that the studentplaced into. The default goal for all students is set to Academic Year, but a teacher can change the student’s goal at anypoint during the school year.
Below are average percentages of completion by grade for students who had an academic year goal selected.
Key Findings:
•Overall, students have completed 13% of the lessons associated with their individual Academic Year Goals as ofthe end of the reporting period.
•Students in Kindergarten have completed 8% of the lessons associated with their individual Academic YearGoals.
•First Grade students have completed 9% of the lessons associated with their individual Academic Year Goals.
•Second Grade students have completed 13% of the lessons associated with their individual Academic YearGoals.

Smarty Ants Scope and Sequence
Levels and Lessons
Smarty Ants has 18 levels and 114 lessons total. As a student progresses through the Smarty Ants scopeand sequence, they can either complete a level or lesson (which means they participated in all of theactivities) or skip a level or lesson based on their performance on the pre-level check, mid-year assessment,or back-to-school assessment.
Students begin with the simplest foundational skills and strategies (e.g., phonological awareness, letternames) and progress to more complex concepts (e.g., blending sounds to decode words, spellingconventions, affixes, multisyllabic words). Later concepts are built on earlier ones, and students have manyopportunities to use the knowledge they have accumulated.

Smarty Ants Curriculum Completion
The Smarty Ants® literacy program by Achieve3000® encourages and motivates students to movefrom lesson to lesson and level to level as they learn and strengthen prereading and reading skills attheir own pace. Through progressively more challenging activities and assessment checks, studentsdevelop mastery of the alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness, and phonics, while developingreading fluency and building vocabulary knowledge and sight-word recognition. Students completethe Smarty Ants curriculum once they have finished lesson 97. In Idaho Community Grant for SmartyAnts, 1 students completed the Smarty Ants curriculum.
*Student Count is based off students who completed the Smarty Ants curriculum during the 2018-19 school year.
