IMPORTANT SMP VOLUNTEER NOTES: Thank you for your generous donation of time and support to our Community! SMP Volunteer Events are open to ALL active duty, dependents, DoD, and their guests. LOA’s are typically provided to all SMP Volunteers within 5 business days. Transportation provided to active duty, with priority given to single/unaccompanied Active Duty Service Members, unless otherwise specified. We update our website often with additional volunteer opportunities that are not on this calendar! Please also ensure to check our website for any

changes in event details. If you are POV’ing for any volunteer events, please pick up an SMP POV Volunteer Log at the SMP Front Desk, available anytime! Please turn in your

completed SMP POV Log to the Front Desk within 14 days, so we can start processing your LOAs. Please dress for weather!

SPECIAL NOTE: ANNUAL SMP DAYS OF SERVICE! (22 APRIL THROUGH 28 APRIL). Please check our SMP website for additional details in MARCH! MARCH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Sickle Cell Walk/Run (3/2). Assist with the 4th Annual Neuse-Pamlico Sound Women’s Coalition Sickle Cell Walk/Run! Help with race operations. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0645; will return around 1130.

Croatan Ridge Assisted Living (3/4). Visit with our local residents at Croatan Ridge! Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700; will return around 1900. Proper civilian attire.

New Bern Historical Society ABC Sale (3/6 and/or 3/9). o Wednesday, 3/6: Assist with event set-up! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0715; return around 1530. Appropriate civilian attire. Chow will be provided. o Saturday, 3/9: Assist with event! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0645; return around 1530. Appropriate civilian attire. Chow will be provided.

Croatan National Forest Volunteering (3/9)! Assist the Forestry Service with a variety of outdoor projects in support of the Croatan National Forest. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0815; will return around 1330. Please wear closed toed shoes/boots and weather appropriate civilian attire. Water, sunscreen, and bug spray will be provided. Please bring snacks and/or bagged lunch.

Autocross (3/9 and 3/10). Assist with set-up, tear down, course operations, event monitoring (and you will get to ride with SCCA instructors). March 9 (0645-1630) and/or March 10 (0730-1600).

Friends of the New Bern Public Library (3/11 and 3/18). Assist with this great event at our local library! o 11 March - Meet at the Roadhouse at 0715; will return around 1130. o 18 March – Meet at the Roadhouse at 0715; will return around 1130.

Craven Arts Council Assistance (3/14). Assist the Craven Arts Council with moving items damaged from Hurricane Florence. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0915; will return around 1230.

New Bern High School Aquatic Robotics Competition (3/16). Assist with this one-of-kind volunteer opportunity! Assist the Robotics team from NBHS with their aquatic robotics race at the YMCA. You’ll be volunteering as judges, scorekeepers, timers, and time penalty enforcers. We’re looking for 20 volunteers. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700; will return at 1430. T-shirts, food, coffee, and snacks provided!

Boys and Girls Club Trivia Bee (3/22) o Friday, 3/22 (1st shift): Assist with event set-up! Meet at the Roadhouse at 1100; return around 1430. Appropriate civilian attire. o Friday, 3/22 (2nd shift): Assist with event and tear down. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700; will return around 2200. Business casual attire please

(slacks or khaki’s, polo/button up shirt, no jeans). Neuse River Bridge Run (3/23). POV only. Volunteer to help the Neuse River Bridge Run. POV only. Please see https://www.bridgerun.org/volunteer1.html for

a complete list of volunteer opportunities and times. Trinity United Methodist Yard Sale (3/28). Assist with unloading tables and chairs and setting-up yard sale items. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will return

around 1230. Ft Macon State Park Special Projects (3/29). Assist with cleaning up Ft. Macon Beach and Trails and other special projects! Meet at the Roadhouse at 0800; will

return around 1500. Please wear closed toed shoes, long pants, and weather appropriate attire. Water will be provided; please bring snacks/bagged lunch or $ for food.

New Bern Get Your Color On (3/30). Help out at this fun event! Looking for volunteers to help with set-up, pictures, game booths, break-down, and assisting with the bands and DJ. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0900; will return around 1530.

Animal Shelter (every Saturday): Volunteer at the Carteret County Animal Rescue. Assist with walking the dogs, meeting with potential adopters, special projects, and cleaning. Meet at the Roadhouse at 0700.

Volunteer with Riverpoint Nursing Home (every Wednesday): Volunteer with our seniors! Attire is proper civilian attire. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1700. Tryon Palace Gardening (TBA). March opportunities for Tryon Palace Gardening will be released on our SMP website! Havelock Boys and Girls Club (M – F). POV only. Volunteer with our local Boys and Girls Club! Assist with mentoring, tutoring, homework, coaching, and

activities! Please contact the Boys and Girls Club at 252-444-5437 for additional details. A one-time $10 background check is required. WWII Museum Restoration (on-going M—S; works around your schedule). Love cool history? Want to help save our WWII history?!! Learn how to restore some

of the coolest artifacts and VEHICLES from WWII at the Newport WWII Museum. POV only; please contact Frank at [email protected] to set up a time to volunteer!

MARCH SPECIAL EVENTS:

Autocross (3/9 and/or 3/10). Pre-registration required online at www.motorsportsreg.com by 7AM on 3/3. Authorized patrons can also register day of, with a $10 late fee. OPEN TO ALL (military, retired, dependents, DoD, and properly vetted civilians). Volunteer opportunities available. Please see www.motorsportsreg.com for all additional registration details.

o Autocross Event on 3/9 from 0730-1700. o Novice School on 3/10 from 0800-1600.

Semper Fit St Patty’s Virtual Half Marathon (now until 3/17). Run a half marathon at YOUR leisure and pace. Run it all at once or a mile at a time. No specific starting time or starting place. Whether you prefer to walk, jog, hike, run/walk on a treadmill, around a track, at the beach or even during another race; it can take place wherever you want, in your time, and at your pace with no pressure. Cost is $35. (Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, unique finisher medal, and a travel pack. For more info, please call 252-466-2208. Retro Bash – 80’s and 90’s (Thursday, 3/21 at 1930) FREE FOOD!! Enjoy some awesome free food, beverage specials, music, games, and retro attire contest. Gift card prizes given for the top three displays of retro attire.

SMP Council Meeting (3/21 at 1430 at the Roadhouse): ALL ARE WELCOME!!! SMP is YOUR program, so come fill us in on your recreation ideas, volunteering ideas, and QOL concerns.

Bible Discussion Group! Every Tuesday at 1900 in the Roadhouse reading room. Fridays! Karaoke!! Starts at 1900!

MARCH TRIPS:

Wearin’ on the Green St. Patrick’s Raleigh Trip (3/16. Free transportation). Celebrate St. Patrick’s in Raleigh! Enjoy the Wearin’ on the Green Festival with tons of live music, activities, new friends, restaurants, shopping, museums, and more! There is a ton of great stuff to do for both those under 21 and over 21. Meet at the Roadhouse at 1000. Limited space – first registered/first served.

Busch Gardens Trip (3/23. $15). Enjoy Busch Gardens Theme Park!! Trip price includes transportation. (Get your annual free Park ticket at www.wavesofhonor.com. Please see https://buschgardens.com/williamsburg/tickets/military/active-duty/ for a complete list of Active Duty offers. Please make every effort to register for this trip by Tuesday, 19 March at Crystal Coast Travel and Leisure (252-466-2197). (***And bring some friends! Trip minimum is 15).
