MARKET REVIEW
Market Review
Ÿ Equity market saw a sharp selloff this month. Investor sentiments were mainly driven by weak trends in quarterly results and IMF lowering India's outlook. BSE sensex and CNX NIFTY fell by 4.9% and 5.7% respectively.
Ÿ Wholesale price-based inflation declined for the second consecutive month to its 23-month low of 2.02% in June, helped by decline in prices of vegetables as well as fuel and power items.
Ÿ CPI inflation rose to 3.18% from 3.05 in May. IIP growth was 3.1% in May on account of improved power generation.
Sector-wise indices- BSE consumer durables and BSE auto were worse affected showing a sharp decline of 14.5% and 13.6%. Cap goods, Oil and gas, small cap and metals fell more than 10%.
Capital flows:
FIIs were net sellers in the equity to the tune of ₹11,850 crores (US$
1,716mn) in July 2019. Cumulatively, FIIs bought equity worth ₹ 35,227
crores (US$ 7,310mn) in last twelve months i.e. from August'18-July'19
and DII bought equity worth ₹ 58,196 crores (US$8,427mn) for the same
period. (As on 31th July 2019, Source: SEBI) (July 2019 Avg. 1 USD = INR
69.0584).
Outlook
Ÿ The month of July was an impactful month with multiple economy and
financial data hitting before the market shore. It started with the Economic
Survey data 2018-2019 which was presented by the new Chief Economic
Advisor Mr. K V Subramaniam.
Ÿ The survey commended the government on service delivery and
macro-economic stabilisation and has predicted a growth of 7% in 2019-
2020.
Ÿ The survey believes that inflation is under-control, interest rates can still
be cut, and government should reduce 'economic policy uncertainty'.
Ÿ Private Investments and aggressive export strategy will be key growth
drivers for the Indian economy.
Ÿ On 5th of July, the second time elected BJP government presented its
first Union Budget before the Lok Sabha. Government's fiscal deficit target
of Rs7.0trn for FY20BE converts into 3.3% fiscal deficit/GDP, compared
with 3.4% in FY19.
Ÿ Overall, the macro context of the budget appears to be positive for
consumption demand. The strong boost to spending for the farm sector
and other rural sector heads, improvement in lending banks, stabilisation in
NBFC sector along with monetary easing by the RBI in combination
represent a stimulus package.
Ÿ Global Economy trends remain weak against the backdrop of rising US-
China trade war, global technology supply chain tension by the prospect of
US sanctions, Brexit related uncertainty and rising geo-political tension
roiling energy prices.
Ÿ According to the IMF World Economic Outlook Report, which was
presented on 23rd July, global growth is forecasted at 3.2% in 2019, picking
up to 3.5% in 2020 (0.1% lower than in April WEO report for both years).
Ÿ India's economy is predicted to grow at 7.0 percent in 2019, picking up

EQUITY
DEBT
to 7.2 percent in 2020. The downward revision of 0.3% for both years
reflects a weaker-than-expected outlook for domestic demand.
Ÿ On the domestic side, Q1FY20 result updates started rolling out from
16thof July, there has been a rainfall surplus of 5% as of 31st July but the
ongoing weakness continues in the economy.
Ÿ The FY20 outlook hinges on 3 key pillars of the economy –
consumption, investment and exports. We believe government response by
means of fiscal push is important in the current scenario.
Ÿ For Equity markets, rising cost-led inflation rather than demand-led
inflation would be margin dilutive and it will bring back the discussion on
pricing power ability on the table. Moreover, the combined effect of
increased cost of capital and INR depreciation likely to have negative
implications on domestic and FII flows with effect on multiples.
Ÿ As a fund house, we continue to believe consumer centric players with
strong distribution networks, differentiated products, no regulatory
overhang on manufacturing units, strong urban and rural base and clear
competitive advantage are better placed to tide over any market volatility.
Market Review
Ÿ Month of July witnessed rally of its time in bond market with Yields touching as low as 6.25% in mid-July following Government's unexpected move to partly shift to overseas borrowing. Yields however recovered from there and ended the month at 6.42% levels. Monsoon remain a big worry as rainfall remained in 18% deficit compared to long-term average levels.
Ÿ Overall, basins and reservoirs were in deficit around 28.8% below long-term average. Delay in onset of monsoon has impacted sowing season. Although monsoon have been good in the fag end of the month. Since July and August are the key sowing months, it needs to be seen how monsoon shapes in next month.
Ÿ India's gross tax collection growth in the first three months of the ongoing fiscal hit a 10-year low. Gross tax revenue for the April-June period of 2019-20 grew 1.36 percent year-on-year to ₹ 4,00,421 crore, That's the slowest pace at which government tax collections have grown in the first three months of a fiscal since 2009-10, when they had contracted 11.4 percent.
Ÿ The GST collection figure dipped below the ₹ 1 lakh crore mark for the first time in the current fiscal in June (₹ 99,939 crore). India's fiscal deficit in first quarter ended June hit 61.4% of the budgeted target for the current fiscal, government data showed on Wednesday.
Ÿ The deficit was 68.7% in the year-earlier period. In absolute terms, the fiscal deficit stood at ₹ 4.32 lakh crore at the end of the quarter against a full-year target of ₹ 7.04 lakh crore. The government aims to restrict the fiscal deficit at 3.3% of GDP in this fiscal, unchanged from the previous year.
Ÿ In a widely expected move, FED met expectations of a 25 bps rate cut from a range of 2.25%-2.5% to 2% - 2.25%. It also complemented the rate cut by ending its balance sheet run off earlier than expected from end September to early August to make it more compatible with a looser monetary stance.
Ÿ However decision to cut rates was not an unanimous one with 2 members voting against a rate cut in this policy meeting. Rate cut was justified by concerns about global growth and persistence in disinflationary pressures while the outlook was described as being constructive.
Outlook
Ÿ With inflation under check, stable rupee, stable oil prices, government's
intention towards fiscal prudence, there is high likelihood of at least 25bps of
rate cut in the upcoming MPC scheduled early next month.

Fund Manager: An Employee of the asset management company such as a mutual fund or life insurer, who manages investments of the scheme. He is usually part of a larger team of fund managers and research analysts.
Maturity profile: Maturity is a term defined with respect to Debt Instruments which have fixed maturities after which they cease to exist on payment of the principal and the stipulated interest. A fund's profile consisting of the allocation of the value of assets in terms of percentage and their time left to maturity respectively is called a maturity profile. It gives a summary of the breakup of the value of assets with different specified maturities.
Holdings: The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund’s latest or updated report statement of investments/securities. These are usually displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is being invested by the fund manager.
Minimum Additional Amount: This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Macaulay Duration: Macaulay Duration is the weighted average term to maturity of the cash flows from a bond. The weight of each cash flow is determined by dividing the present value of the cash flow by the price.
Nature of Scheme: The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual fund that aims at generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund. Likewise, a mutual fund that aims at capital preservation by investing in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have subcategories.
NAV: The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Portfolio turnover ratio: Portfolio turnover is a measure of how frequently assets within a fund are bought and sold by the managers. This ratio measures the fund's trading activity, which is computed by taking the lesser of purchases or sales and dividing by average monthly net assets.
Portfolio Yield: Disclosure only required for Debt Funds.
Rating Profile: Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund in various investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
Risk Free Returns: MIBOR rate for 1 day. To be sourced from FIMMDA (http://www.fimmda.org) for last day of the month.
Sector allocation: Sector allocation may be defined as an allocation of funds in a certain percentage of the portfolio in different sectors of the economy.
Sharpe Ratio: The Sharpe Ratio, names after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated using standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
SIP: SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. Its works similar to a recurring bank deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that the invests Rs 500 every 15 of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.
SIP Return: The SIP return calculation should be based on Rs. 10,000 invested every month. Returns would be 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 7 year etc.
Standard Deviation: Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment’s performance. When a mutual fund has a high standard deviation, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Tracking error: Tracking error is the difference between a portfolio's returns and the benchmark or index it was meant to mimic or beat. Tracking error is sometimes called active risk.
Yield to Maturity: The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual rate. The YTM factors in the bond’s current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
