History of Soccer
People have played games like soccer for thousands of years.
Soccer’s Voyage to England
Historians propose that the Romans took a form of soccer with them
to England.
Starting in England around 1863, soccer slowly transformed into the
game we know today.
It slowly began to spread in popularity all throughout Europe and the
American continents.

Stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association. In English:
International Federation of Association Football.
Organizes the World Cup and other international soccer events.
Started in Paris, France, in 1904.

The World Cup Finals is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.
An estimated 1.1 billion people watched the tournament in 2002.
In France’s 1998 tournament, 37 billion viewers watched and 2.7 million
people gathered to watch the 64 matches held there.
World Cup Winners
There have been 18 tournaments in all and only 7 nations have won the title!
Brazil has the most successful World Cup team, with 5 total wins.
The USA has never won a World Cup.
World Cup for Women!
Since 1991, FIFA has organized a World Cup for women, known as the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They also play every 4 years and the process of qualification is much the same as the men’s.

• Represents an armadillo, which is an endangered species
in Brazil.
• The name was chosen after an online voting process in
which 1.7 million people took part
• Around 48% of people voted for Fuleco
• It is a portmanteau of the words "Futebol" ("Football")
and "Ecologia" ("Ecology”)
Official Ball• Named ‘Adidas Brazuca’
• Name was selected by a public vote that received responses from
more than 1 million Brazilian football fans
• Brazuca received over 70 per cent of the vote
• The other names in competition were Bossa Nova and Carnavalesca
