Criticism: Too much Responsibility on the Individual
The Individual in the Network Era:
- loses permanent employment
- has to develop own competence
- has to market herself / himself
- expected to take on “any” job
- expected to be creative - low compensation
- is a “unit” on a competitive market
The labour market in the Network Era:
- trend towards the 80/20 society?
”A new Freedom and Strength?”

Challenges faced by the manufacturing industry
A global demand for a revised “industrial system”, where speed is inabsolute focus
• Global market• Shrinking margin costs and margin prices• Smaller “market windows”, demanding flexibility and short ramp-up• New offers to market, function instead of hardware only• New market-channels, based on instantaneous response• Developed concern for environment, necessary to follow each
individual product• Virtual companies and networks• Coordinated and simultaneous development of product and process
ICT is a key tool in all these trends, leading to:the 3rd step of ICT-integration
