A welcome from the South Australia Chair On behalf of everyone at Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) we’re very excited to welcome you to the 2019 South Australian State Conference.
This year we have a jam-packed program with a very impressive line-up of speakers, activities and opportunities to network across two days. In addition, the program includes concurrent sessions, and a networking dinner that is not to be missed.
You will hear from an array of speakers and industry experts focusing on the theme ‘Change is the Constant.’ With the all the recent changes and upcoming changes happening to the SA health network we want to address these and work together to make the transition as smooth as possible.
We’ve started 2019 with a year-view and have already locked in dates and locations for many events across the nation. From our other State Conferences to the National Congress in Sydney and various One Day Programs, Lunch & Learns and Webinars. We’re so happy to bring more offerings and value to our members.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our corporate partners and sponsors involved in the Conference. Without their ongoing support, these events would not be possible. Sponsors and Partners of HFMA do not only support these events but are also great supporters of the health finance sector.
We encourage all of you to visit our exhibitors over the next couple of days to discuss the great work being done in the industry and how they may be able to help you.
An event of this size requires significant planning, commitment and hard work. We wish to thank all keystakeholders across South Australia, the HFMA team, partners and sponsors, and the many presenters that give of their time to pass on their knowledge and expertise. Every single one of you are vital to the success of this event.
Finally, we want to thank you for your support of the Conference and look forward to having you involved with HFMA and its vision of Sustainable Healthcare for a Healthy Australia.

Western NSW LHDRostering ProficiencyProgram
Case Study
Right people, right skills, right place to deliver excellent patient care every time.Rostering is a critical enabler to patient safety, quality of care, staff wellbeing and organisational efficiency. Yet it is complex requiring managers to balance often competing demands. Recognising this, WNSWLHD in partnership with Ministry of Health embarked upon a rostering improvement initiative to improve rostering practice and upskill roster managers.
The initiative comprised a series of structured educational webinars focused on different aspects of the rostering cycle underpinned by online training available via the NSW Health Rostering Capability Framework (RCF) and the use of the Allocate Optima solution. Alongside this, roster managers received one-on-one coaching and support from a team of local rostering experts. Roster Managers embarked upon a 90-day challenge to demonstrate improved performance against key rostering metrics.
Sponsorship and Local LeadershipThe initiative had strong sponsorship from the LHD Executive and facility managers which was critical in building momentum. Local expertise with an understanding of the rostering environment and specific challenges faced by roster managers was also invaluable in driving rostering improvements focused on individual roster characteristics.
A Commitment to Continuous ImprovementWNSW LHD have recognised that to continue to achieve excellence in rostering, a commitment to continuous improvement is required. The WNSWLHD Rostering Proficiency Program is part of an ongoing effort to continue to develop and mature rostering capability across the LHD making use of the many rostering resources and the best use of the Allocate Optima solution.
Key OutcomesThe WNSWLHD Rostering Proficiency Program underpinned by Allocate Optima, has shown demonstrable improvements in the timeliness, quality and effectiveness of rostering and proven that with executive commitment, local engagement and dedicated support significant improvements in rostering outcomes can be made. Key outcomes include;
