01 Welcome to Cerkno
Welcome to Cerkno
Cradle of Orienteering
Cerkno has been one of the centres of orienteering in Slovenia since the 1970’s, when
Slovenia was still searching its path towards International Orienteering Federation. Cerkno
Cup has been the race that has helped the development of orienteering, funding of new
maps and supporting the more or less constant work with the youth in the region. Hosting
club, OK Azimut, has raised many of the best Slovenian runners over the years and our
members are still among those, who are finding their way to the top in the sport that we all
love so much.
We have organized a great number of World Ranking Events, maturing as a good
organizer and SEEOC seems like the next logical step. With a little help from our friends
from other clubs in Slovenian orienteering federation we hope to make your stay in
Slovenia pleasant and most of all we hope that you shall return soon.

Host Town & Venue
Subalpine town of Cerkno is at the crossroads of many valleys originating in the mountains
from 900m to 1600m above sea level. It has a rich cultural and natural heritage, which
makes it a calm green tourist destination. If you prefer clean nature, peaceful hikes in the
accessible mountains, digging into history of Neanderthal origins of music or humanity that
prevailed among our inhabitants during the World War II, Cerkno is the place for you.
However, achieving the most challenging terrains, one must drive some 30 kilometers to
the south, where the most demanding karst terrains in Slovenia are situated. You will get to
know them during model, middle distance and relay races (Stages 1-3 of Cerkno Cup).
The competition centre will be in Hotel Cerkno (base of Ski center Cerkno and a small spa).

05 Maps & Terrain
Maps & Terrain
Terrain
Model, relay and middle (stages 1 – 3) will be organized on traditional stony Slovenian karst
terrains (bottom). Additionally there might be some undergrowth which will reduce running
speed and visibility. Long distance (stage 4) will be organized on the top of the ski resort
with fast, but partly very steep and green areas. Sprint distance will be organized in
subalpine town of Cerkno, mostly paved and flat with irregular network of streets and
partially open and steep slopes.

We had to make some last-minute changes due to under-bark beetle damage to the
coniferous forest after ice (sleet) storms in 2014. Model event area still remains under
embargo as a reserve area.
