Sparks 6 Teacher’s Resource Book offers information and tips to help you get the most from all the teacher’s materials. It also contains additional photocopiable resources to help widen and support the children’s learning.

• FlashcardsFlashcards are an excellent classroom tool to help introduce, reinforce and review vocabulary. Sparks comes with a pack of 87 full colour flashcards illustrating key vocabulary. Instructions for using the flashcards are given in the teaching notes for each lesson.

Each picture flashcard has a corresponding word card which can be used to help develop children’s reading skills, to assist in writing activities and to use in matching activities. All the flashcards are colour coded by unit for easy identification.

The Sparks flashcards can also be used in a variety of games which are explained on the Options pages of the Teacher’s Book. Children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing and games provide a way to engage children’s interest and enthusiasm. Games offer valuable opportunities to use the language for real purposes and provide enjoyable occasions for repeating and reinforcing the language, supporting retention and recall. Games which incorporate active methods using physical response are ideal for assimilating language.

The children also have their own key vocabulary cut-outs which can be used in class or at home. There are games and activity ideas on the Options pages of the Teacher’s Book. The children can make envelopes or use food bags to store their cut-outs.

• Posters with pop-outsEach unit of Sparks is accompanied by two posters with pop-outs. Side A is used to introduce and practise the vocabulary and content of the unit. Side B is used to exploit the unit contents in a different way. The Teacher’s Book gives full instructions of when and how to use the posters and pop-outs. The pop-outs can also be used as flashcards.

Tips

Keep the pop-outs for each unit in an envelope • or sandwich bag to avoid them getting lost or mixed up.

Put two nails or drawing pins on the wall or in • the wood of the blackboard and hang up the poster using two bulldog clips to avoid damage and the mess of Blu-Tack or adhesive tape. The poster is easily displayed and reversed.

Hang the posters at the height of the children • so that they can easily see them and participate with the activities.

• E-solutionsAll the Sparks digital components run on Windows, Linux or MAC operating systems and are compatible with all interactive whiteboard (IWB) software.

Insert the Multi-ROM or the CD-ROM into the computer connected to the IWB. If it fails to run automatically, click on exeWin.exe to run.

The Sparks E-solutions pack includes three

CD-ROMs:

1) Student’s Multi-ROM

Sparks 6 Multi-ROM is a fantastic interactive resource for both children and teachers which provides thorough practice of the Student’s Book contents. It contains eight units with interactive activities covering all the main language taught in the Student’s Book.

Sparks 6 Multi-ROM can be used in class with an IWB to exploit the course contents while also helping children understand the concept of working together as a team to achieve a common objective. Alternatively, it can be used on an individual level by children working alone either in the Multimedia

Lab or at home, reinforcing their language learning outside the classroom.

A Multi-ROM Guide is provided on the main menu. A short animation explains how each activity works.

How to use Sparks 6 Multi-ROM on an interactive whiteboard (IWB)

Main menu: Access to units

Click on the unit. 1 Click on the relevant activity to open it. 2 Click on 3 MENU to go back to the main menu.Click on 4 EXIT to exit the Multi-ROM.

Unit menu

Vocabulary and grammar games

Each unit contains two vocabulary activities and two grammar activities which provide further practice of the Student’s Book contents.

The bottom menu contains a running score which shows the total number of questions the children have to complete as well as the ones they get correct. The bottom menu also offers the possibility of restarting any activity immediately.

Most of the activities include a timer to make them more challenging for the children.

Activities with a long listening include a control to pause the audio or move backwards and forwards. This enables the children to listen to any part they need again.

Some activities contain more than one screen. Click on the icon on the bottom menu to access the next screen.

The Multi-ROM activities include a final screen showing the correct answers to revise the key concepts presented in each activity. In some activities the revision starts automatically right after the cheering animation. In others, click on the icon on the results screen to access.

Each unit contains a digital version of the Student’s Book story and a reading comprehension activity. The story runs automatically to facilitate its projection. The digital story is an excellent tool to attract the children’s attention.

The Phonics section offers an additional activity to consolidate the listening and writing skills of the children.

In the Writing section the students reinforce their writing skills through three different types of activities:

Dictation

Find and correct the mistakes

Comprehension

In Festivals there are two activities. Listen to the Festivals songs while you do a listening comprehension activity with your class.

The Multi-ROM also contains a screen to listen to all the songs of the course.

The assessment for the activities is done in different ways according to the activity type:

Final screen showing the children’s answers as well as the correct answers at the end of the activity.

Final screen showing the correct answers to facilitate the revision of the key concepts presented in each activity.

Instant feedback as they do the activity.

Instant feedback and final screen with an animation at the end of the activity to revise key concepts.

Check and try again: once the activity is completed, children check their answers and have the chance to try again. The correct answers remain for them to focus on their mistakes. After this second attempt, they can see the correct answers and compare them with their own by clicking on CHECK again.

Instant feedback with countdown: the children have to pay careful attention and choose the correct answer, if they choose the wrong answer the clock runs faster! The score the children get depends on how quickly they finish the activity with the least number of mistakes. Children can always get a better score by doing the activity again!

Tips to use student’s audio material

Sparks 6 Multi-ROM contains the student’s audio material for PC or CD player. Insert the Multi-ROM into a CD player or PC to listen to the student’s audio material. The first eight tracks are songs from the Student’s Book which can be used as background music as the children work.

Images

All the images and pictures in Sparks 6 Digital can be enlarged. This is a fantastic visual feature which can be used for developing children’s speaking skills.

3) The Interactive Young Learner Practice CD-ROM (Flyers level)

This CD-ROM includes three complete interactive exams for YLE practice on an IWB. The interactive tools for the children are placed at a lower level on the screen to facilitate their participation with the IWB. The interactive tools for the teacher are located at the top of the screen to help teachers guide and control the children’s work.

Apart from IWB exploitation, the Interactive YLE Practice CD-ROM also contains a network installation facility which enables the children to work at their own rythym in the Multimedia Lab. This helps teachers cater for mixed ability settings.

Tips

Teachers can focus on practising one activity type or have the children complete one exam at a time. The CD-ROM contains a printable version of each exam which includes tips for conducting the Speaking Exams, as well as all the answers.

• DVDEach unit of the Sparks 6 DVD shows people in authentic situations. This can be watched with or without subtitles. A Play all option is also available. The Sparks 6 Teacher’s Resource Book includes worksheets for working with the DVD in class.

• Tips for the Test - YLE and TrinityThe Cambridge Young Learner exams are designed for children aged from 7 to 12 years old. They are tested normally in their own school environment or an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same format. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. In terms of grammar and lexis, the Flyers level is on par with the KET exams. The difference is that, unlike the exams for older students, children cannot fail the YLE. Every participant is given a diploma with badges in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The badges are coloured in depending on the success of the candidate.

Exams follow a very set format. The children never write on the exam papers, rather they answer on an answer sheet, usually with one word answers. They are tested in groups, except for the Speaking session, where the test is given individually.

The Sparks E-solutions YLE CD-ROM includes three complete tests. These can be printed out in colour and used for classroom practice; one set can be used many times. The children write their answers on a piece of paper except for the last page of the Listening exams, which is used for colouring and therefore can only be used once.

Tips

When doing the practice exams it is best to • recreate similar circumstances as when the students will do the exam themselves, allow them the same amount of time, and have them practise exam techniques.

The ESOL web site has an abundance of exam • tips as well as more practice activities and information about the exams.

The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are • divided into the different sections of the exams. This way the teacher may choose to practice the same exam question in various exams or practise once complete exam, or pick and choose activities from different exams.

Trinity College London, Graded Examinations in Spoken English

The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are one-to-one oral examinations with a native English speaking Trinity examiner, which test a student’s speaking and listening skills. The exams provide an official recognition of a student’s level of spoken English and are accepted by universities and employers worldwide. Candidates must be aged 7 or over.

The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral exams which test the student’s general conversation and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam grades range from absolute beginner level to near native fluency.

Apart from being a recognised meter of a student’s skills in English, the examination also works as a motivational tool encouraging students to practise and try to communicate in English.

Tips

In each English lesson, ask general questions • such as What day is it today? What’s the weather like today? Is it spring or summer? How old are you?

Encourage full answers whenever asking • questions. T: What day is it today? SS:Tuesday. T: It’s Tuesday.

When asking questions, if a child does not know • the answer, encourage them to say “I don’t know” or “I can’t remember” or “I’m sorry, I don’t know the word in English”, rather than remaining silent or saying “errr”.

Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a • team quiz and award points. Or ask questions at the end of a lesson, whoever answers correctly can line up first.

Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions • so candidates become more confident with the style of question and can answer more rapidly and naturally.

When choosing a grade for candidates, consider • the child’s personality as well as their level of English. A shy child with a good level of English, may not do as well as a more outgoing child who speaks more spontaneously.

Encourage the children to ask questions too. • From Level 2 onwards they are expected to ask the examiner questions.

to maintain a fluid conversation rather than just answering the examiner’s questions.

Tips for preparing the topic

Children should choose something that they • are genuinely interested in and can talk easily about, (a hobby, pet, recent holiday...).

They should collect all necessary photos or • pictures well before the exam to give them time to plan the points and practice what to say.

Children should not learn their topic by heart as • they must speak naturally and spontaneously in the exam.

Allow children the possibility of presenting their • topic to the class and answering their questions to give them more confidence.

The child should prepare several questions to • ask the examiner related to their topic.

Make a photocopy of the Topic Form for each • student. Check that their information and spelling is correct before giving them the real Topic Form to complete.

Example questions

Grade 4

Where did you go on holiday last year?

When did you start in this school?

How often do you go to the cinema?

Tell me about your hobbies.

Did you watch any TV last night?

Grade 5

Which do you prefer, reading books or watching films?

How are you going to celebrate your birthday?

What is the most important festival here?

What sort of TV programmes do you watch?

Which is quicker, a car or a bike?

Grade 6

Which countries would you like to visit?

What kind of shopping do you do?

If it rains this weekend, what will you do?

What do you do to keep healthy?

Tell me about some of your school rules.

• Using the worksheet sectionsSparks optional worksheets can be photocopied according to the needs of individual children or the class as a whole.

The Options pages of the Teacher’s Book indicate when each activity should be done to assure that the content and vocabulary have been covered in the lesson. There are eight photocopiable sections.

Victoria: This is a public school. Well, actually it’s a private school. Most parents pay a lot of money for their children to come here.Jasmine: My name is Jasmine and I come from Hong Kong. My typical day starts off with swimming in the morning at six o’clock. Then I have breakfast in the house and then I have double Chemistry in the science labs. After double Chemistry I have double French in the language centre and then I have double volleyball in the hall. Hopefully, when I leave I’m going to go to university but I’m not sure what I’m going to do.Victoria: What subjects do you study?Camilla: I study French, English, Art and Philosophy.Suresh: I study Maths, English, Science, Media Studies, French, History and IT.Georgina: I study French, History, Media Studies, Maths and Science.Indira: I study Art, Science. They start at the age of eleven and go on till sixteen or finish at eighteen if they are going on to university.Alex: My name’s Alex. We get to school at quarter to eight and have registration. We have to be at school on time and we have to be punctual to lessons and we have to wear our uniform and we have to do our homework. We have to wear a red jumper, black trousers and black shoes. We have five lessons, which are an hour long each. Today, for example, we have Chemistry and Art. We call our teachers “Sir” or “Miss”. I like my school because the classrooms are attractive and we have large playing fields and lots of other activities after school. There’s nothing I don’t like about my school.

Unit 2

Victoria: Hi. This is Spitalfields Market in London. It’s a Sunday market. It’s open every Sunday. But what exactly can you buy here? This used to be a fruit and vegetable market in the old days. Clothes here are a bit more expensive than other markets. How do you get the money? I save up my pocket money and do odd jobs for my parents. Some kids have part-time jobs, like delivering newspapers. What do you think? No, I don’t like it either. So, what is street fashion?Woman: I think street fashion is colourful, cheap, it’s individual.

Victoria: So, how much are you spending today on clothes?Woman: I’ll probably spend about fifty pounds.Victoria: What’s street fashion?Stall holder: It’s what people wear on the streets.Victoria: So how much do teenagers usually spend on clothes?Stall holder: About twenty pounds, not a lot of money.Victoria: What’s street fashion?Maddy: Street fashion to me is individual clothing.Victoria: What kind of clothes do you like?Grazia: I like London street fashion clothes.Eddie: I like baggy clothes, darker colours, greens, browns, jackets, jeans.Maddy: I like quite colourful clothes. I make a lot of my own clothes though.Frank: I like practical clothes. I like warm clothes on a day like today.Victoria: So, how much do you spend on clothes?Grazia: I spend about two hundred pounds a month on clothes.Eddie: I spend between twenty and a hundred pounds a month.Maddy: Probably about a maximum of about twenty quid.Frank: I spend as little as possible on clothes.Victoria: Where do you buy your clothes?Grazia: At markets or in boutiques or shops in different places in London.Eddie: I buy all my clothes in the markets. I don’t buy any from the shops.Frank: I buy my clothes anywhere other than London because it’s expensive here.Victoria: What’s your favourite piece of clothing?Grazia: My favourite item at the moment is this bag. It actually comes from Italy.Maddy: My favourite piece of clothing…I’ve got a really nice sequined top.Eddie: My favourite piece of clothing is this jacket.Frank: My favourite piece of clothing is this because it’s got a hood to keep me warm.Victoria: What do you wear when you want to dress up?Grazia: When I want to dress up I wear something new in my wardrobe.Frank: Oh, usually one of my uncle’s old suits is what I put on when I want to dress up.Victoria: I’m going to a party on Saturday. This’ll look great. How much is that?Stall holder: Twenty pounds.Victoria: Thank you.Stall holder: Thank you.

2There are different sources of energy. Some are renewable and others are non-renewable. Non-renewable sources do not last forever. We should use more renewable sources because they do not run out. Coal, gas, oil and uranium are all non renewable sources. Solar, geothermal, wind, hydroelectric, wave and tiadal and biomass are all renewable sources. Wave and tidal energy is from the sea and geothermal energy is from the heat in the earth. Some people make their own electricity. They use windmills and solar panels.

Teacher’s notes

Before you readSay: Let’s talk about Australia! Show the class the cover of the book and explain that it’s about a boy called Simon who lives in Australia. Display a map or globe and ask a volunteer to come and point out Australia. Ask the class questions to elicit what they know about Australia: What’s the capital city? (Canberra); What languages do people speak in Australia? (English is the first language but there are also lots of people who speak Chinese, Italian and Greek; What animals live in Australia? (Kangaroos, Koalas and Duck-billed platypus are all native to Australia. It’s also common to farm sheep and cows); What’s the climate like? (there are different biomes including desert, rainforest and grassland).

While you readAsk the children to stop reading on pages 10 and 11. Ask them to say how they think Simon is feeling and then ask them to say what they would do if they saw a shark this close. Ask the children if they’ve had any scary experiences like this and invite them to tell the class.

After you readWrite Simon on the board in a circle and draw four arrows coming from the circle. At the end of each arrow, write a title: school, hobbies, family, home. Point to school and elicit information about Simon: He doesn’t go to school, he studies at home and talks to his teacher with a webcam. Then ask the children to look back at the story in pairs and make notes about Simon for the other titles.

Using the worksheets

Worksheet 1

Look at the story and solve the puzzle.Explain that the crossword is all

about the Rock Pool story. Write the clue for 3 across on the board: Simon’s website is about _ _ _ _ _ animals. Ask the children to suggest how to complete the clue (ocean), then tell them to complete the crossword looking back at the story when necessary.

Worksheet 2Find the letters and discover what’s in Simon’s bucket.Tell the children that Simon’s got an animal in his bucket and that they’re going to do a puzzle to find out what it is. Write the first clue on the board: The first letter is in ____________ and in ____________. Elicit the two missing words (crab and waves) and ask the class to look at the words and say which letter they have in common (a). Then tell them to write the letter a on the first line in Simon’s speech bubble. Ask children to solve the remaining clues to reveal the mystery animal.

Worksheet 3

Take the ocean animals quiz.Give out the quiz, write the following key vocabulary on the board and check children’ understanding: whale, heart, octopus, blood, brain, backwards. Then instruct them to look at the questions in pairs but mark their answers individually. Explain that the aim of the quiz is to learn new things about ocean animals and they should make a guess when they don’t know an answer.

Then go through each question and tell the children the answers. Tell children to count how many answers they had right and see if they had more or less than their partner.

Extension

Play a game: divide the class into groups and give each group a sheet of paper. Give the groups

a minute to make a list of all the sea animals they can think of in English. Stop the groups after a minute and give them a point for each word on their list. Continue the game with other categories: technology words, farm animals, countries and so on.

Ask the children to choose an animal and do a mini-project on it with a picture and information about its food, body, habitat and size.

28th April

Dear Mum,

Thank you for your letter, it arrived yesterday. My

journey was very exciting. I arrived at the rescue centre

on Sunday. The weather in Thailand is hot and humid.

I started work on Monday. Yesterday I washed the

elephants and I fed the tigers.

Tomorrow I am going to build a tree house for the

monkeys. A monkey called Joe is my favourite animal.

I am having a lovely time. Send my love to Dad.

Love from,

Lucy

Last year Helen worked for an Animal Rescue Centre. She slept in a tent. She started work at 8 o’clock. First, she cleaned the monkeys’ huts and then she fed all the animals. At 11 o’clock she walked to the lake. She couldn’t drive through the jungle. It took half an hour. She washed the elephants and then walked back to the centre for lunch. She didn’t work in the afternoon because it was often rainy and windy. In the evening she studied in her room. Next year, she is going to go to a different centre in a different biome. She is going to study a different endangered species.
