Speak Out Shine Bright Be Heard
WATERLOW HALL FESTIVAL PROGRAMMEJanuary - March 2020
I am delighted to open the doors to our new Waterlow Hall.
This project belongs to everyone: pupils, parents, staff, alumnae, local friends and loyal supporters, all of whom have joined our fundraising campaign and helped to raise over £3 million. It is the largest project ever financed entirely through fundraising from our community and we cannot thank you enough for the patience, persistence and passion you have shown as we have taken time to realise this vision.
The Waterlow Hall will become the heart of our school: the place where we meet, celebrate, perform, study and learn; a centre for us to welcome back our alumnae and welcome in local schools and the surrounding community.
I am delighted to welcome you here today and hope that this will be the first of many wonderful experiences you enjoy in our new Waterlow Hall.
Welcome
Vicky Bingham Headmistress
Speak Out, Shine Bright, Be Heard 3
In Girls’ Day School Trust schools, like South Hampstead High School, girls learn without limits.
We don’t just provide a first-class education. We develop character, helping girls to be confident, happy and fearless.
A girl doesn’t just learn in the classroom; she learns in the playground, on the playing field, in the debating chamber and on the stage.
And I can’t think of a better stage than the all-new Waterlow Hall. I am delighted to see the completion of this wonderful project. I want to thank everyone whose hard work and generous support has made it possible.
It’s a spectacular platform for South Hampstead pupils to fulfil their potential and their dreams. I have no doubt they will go on to contribute to a better future, as world changers in a changing world.
The development of the Waterlow Hall marks the culmination of the original ten year masterplan for the school which saw the complete transformation of the Senior School site. It is also the first step of our new masterplan as we look towards our 150 year anniversary in 2026. We are confident that the Waterlow Hall will be the heart of South Hampstead High School in the future and hugely enhance the education we can provide to our pupils. It will also offer wonderful opportunities for us to reach out to local schools and the wider community as we seek to share knowledge and resources with those around us.
As a naturally very shy person, South Hampstead really helped me to come out of my shell. I acted, I sang, I debated, I played the piano in assemblies. Not one of those activities came naturally to me, but it was the start of me finding my voice and exploring what it was like to perform in front of people. The arts are a joy in themselves, but when they also help young women to present themselves publically with skill and confidence, they are essential. I hope the new Waterlow Hall will inspire the next generation of South Hampstead girls to find their voice, explore and follow their dreams.

Gemma Rosefield is one of three sisters to have attended South Hampstead and her father was Chairman of the Governing body from 2005 to 2015. Her musical career started when she began to learn the cello and sing in the choir at the Junior School. She made her concerto debut at the age of sixteen, when she won First Prize in the European Music for Youth Competition in Oslo, Norway. Numerous awards and prizes have followed, including the Premier Prix Maurice Ravel in France, the Vice-Principal’s Special Prize at the RAM, and the Gold Medal at the RNCM.
Described by The Strad on her 2003 Wigmore Hall debut as ‘a mesmerising musical treasure’, by the London Evening Standard as ‘a phenomenal talent’, and by BBC Music Magazine as ‘one to watch’, Gemma made her solo debut in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and in The Diligentia, The Hague, in the New Masters International Recital Series. Gemma gives some 50 performances a year as cellist of Ensemble 360, Royal Philharmonic Society Medal Winners. She is also cellist of the Leonore Piano Trio, and regularly performs on BBC Radio 3.
Having made a career as a professional musician, Gemma is passionate about giving young women as many opportunities in music as possible.

Event Details
The South Hampstead Speaker Series was introduced in 2017 and has featured many distinguished guests with a myriad of different perspectives on the world. The series is open to all members of the community and we are delighted to welcome several local schools to this speaker event in the Waterlow Hall, to hear Professor Alice Roberts.
Academic and broadcaster, Professor Alice Roberts trained as a medical doctor, before becoming a university lecturer. She has been Professor of Public Engagement at the University of Birmingham since 2012. Passionate about generating and spreading knowledge to the widest possible audience, she made her TV debut in 2001 as a human bone specialist on Channel 4's Time Team before presenting on BBC2's Coast.
She has since written and presented a wide range of television series, including Ice Age Giants, Origins of Us, Horizon and Digging for Britain. Professor Roberts is interested in human anatomy, physiology, evolution, archaeology and history and has written numerous science books, including The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being, shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize.
She joins us for an enlightening evening as she delves into archaeology, history and genetics to reveal the amazing stories of three species that became our allies.
THURSDAY 30th JANUARY
South Hampstead Speaker Series
The Senior School production this year is the award-winning play Emilia – a riotous, witty reclaiming of the life of an exceptional woman. Four hundred years ago, Emilia Bassano wanted her voice to be heard – it wasn't. Could she have been the ‘Dark Lady’ of Shakespeare's sonnets? What of her own poetry? Why was her story erased from history? In Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s play, Emilia and her sisters reach out across the centuries with passion, fury, laughter and song. Emilia made its acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare's Globe in 2018, before taking the West End by storm the following year.
TUESDAY 11th – THURSDAY 13th FEBRUARY

The English Department invites you to hear pupil writers read out their prize winning poems and stories. Many of our students write each week in Scheherazade and the Upper School Creative Writing Club. They have also had great success in GDST and national creative writing competitions. It will be a great celebration of their creative writing achievements.

SUNDAY 8TH MARCH

Rock Bottom is about The Cobblestones, just an ordinary Stone Age family of cave folk living on Stoney Street, Rock Bottom. But when cave girl inventor Rosie Cobblestone hatches her very first good idea, she's whisked off to work for the beautiful celebrity Lady Lava. With mysterious monsters terrorising the town and a volatile volcano ready to blow its top, can Rosie become a little ‘boulder’ and hatch a plan to save her family, her friends and her very own precious Rock Bottom?
TUESDAY 24TH MARCH
Junior School Play – Year 4
This is a unique initiative from South Hampstead to bring together Year 9 pupils from across five GDST schools to collaborate, research and present a TED-style talk on stage. The workshop will culminate in an evening of presentations to showcase the projects.

2. THE MAP OF STARS
The walls of our entrance foyer are covered in a galaxy of stars and inside each star are the initials of people who have helped with the campaign. A list of their names can be found on pages 16-17.
As you take in your new surroundings, do make a note of some of the features of Waterlow Hall
3. THE MUSICAL FRIEZE
The stave which leads you into the hall is The Londonderry Air – the music for the school song which is sung by the Senior School girls at the end of each term. Some of the notes are named (see page 13 for details).
1. THE STEINWAY GRAND PIANO AND STORE
We are one of the few venues in London to be the proud owners of a Steinway Model D Grand Piano and at the far end of the hall we have a special store to ensure that this instrument is kept in the very best condition.
5. THE FEATURE LIGHTING
The impressive sculptural LED lighting system suspended from the ceiling creates a magical canopy of stars, which can be easily adapted to create the right environment for all users. Importantly, by using LED, it is eco-friendly and uses minimal power.
4. THE TECHNICAL GANTRY
All around the hall is a gantry to provide safe and secure access for pupils to rig and manage stage lighting and manage the audio visual equipment, which now form an integrated part of our performance venue.

6. THE RETRACTABLE SEATING
The tiered seats will give a much better audience experience and can be retracted into the back wall to ensure that the hall remains multi-functional. Some of our supporters have plaques on these seats; a map of the seats with names can be found on pages 14-15.
7. THE ACOUSTIC PANELLING
The timber walls don’t just look beautiful, they are designed to optimise the reflection, absorption and diffusion of sound. We hope it will make this venue a wonderful place to listen to every kind of performance. Hidden behind the panels are the heating, ventilation systems and services to ensure the hall will be a comfortable place to be.
8. THE RADIO AND PRODUCTION SUITES
Look behind and up to the gallery and you will see two studios on either side of the upper entrance. These house lighting and sound desks and will become the control centres for pupils learning about back-stage production and lighting. We also have plans to launch our own Radio Station from the ‘Radio Suite’.
9. THE DESIGN AESTHETIC
The hall has been designed to reflect an autumnal woodland theme using natural materials, textures and colours. The seat fabric, chosen by the pupils, complements this theme and the harmony with nature continues with a focus on sustainability: the hall is heated by solar panels on the roof, uses LED lighting and has advanced insulation and ventilation systems.

Speak Out, Shine Bright, Be Heard 17
The Waterlow Hall Festival opens to celebrate the completion of the new Waterlow Hall.
2020
Towards 2026
Our Waterlow Hall project is the first part of our strategic plan to be completed, as we look towards our 150th anniversary in 2026.
One of our next priorities is to extend the outstanding opportunities we can offer at South Hampstead to all girls, regardless of their means. To this end, the governors have committed to any future revenues generated by this wonderful new facility being invested directly back into our bursary funds.
The Girls’ Day School Trust was founded in 1872 to provide education to girls from all backgrounds. Until 1976, and the abolition of the direct-grant scheme, the GDST was the largest provider of free independent school places. Today it still outperforms the independent sector, spending £13 million every year on bursaries. However, there is much more that we can do as a school, and as a family of schools, to honour the pioneering mission of the GDST.
Our ambition at South Hampstead, as we look towards our 150th anniversary in 2026, is to double the number of bursary places at our school and to work with the GDST to ultimately ensure that all girls can ‘learn without limits’– limits of gender, limits of opportunity, limits of education and, most importantly, limits of financial means.
You can find out more about our future plans in Towards and Beyond our 150th Anniversary or at www.shhs.gdst.net/support-uswww.shhs.gdst.net/support-us

PROJECT ZERO
You are welcome to keep this programme as a memento but, if you don’t want to, please return it to the desk in the atrium so that we can recycle and reuse it at future events and minimise our carbon footprint.
