President’s Word
It gives me an immense satisfaction as I finalize this second annual report of our University of
Delhi at Acharya Narendra Dev College SPIE Student Chapter. Our group of 25 has now become
a big family of 52 members which is spread across several disciplines. Surely this
multidisciplinary increment in the number of student members is an encouraging sign as far as
the popularity of the chapter is concerned.
I would like to thank SPIE for providing me a life time opportunity to attend SPIE Optics +
Photonics 2011, during August 20 – 25, 2011 in San Diego, CA, USA under the Officer Travel
Grant and present a paper on “Laser Based Studies in Geometrical Optics at School Level”. This
visit had a great motivational impact on my peers. The exposure during the student leadership
workshop, discussions held with other chapter members from various countries and optics
fraternity was a great learning experience. It was shared and implemented in the various
activities for this year. The student members have been very enthusiastically involved with the
chapter. This year also our team designed promotion poster for circulation amongst our peers in
the college as well as to other undergraduate, postgraduate as well as research scholars of
University of Delhi. We regularly updated the SPIE corner, the bulletin board, with the
achievements, activities and updates in the area of optics and photonics.
A workshop on THIN FILMS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS was held on Feb 24 – 25th
2012.
Students were taught the intricacies of thin films in which they showed keen interest. 39 students
took part in this workshop and made it a great success. After the workshop got over, many
students were inspired and joined our SPIE Chapter.
Another proud moment for us is that Miss. Phalguni Mathur, B.Sc. (H) Physics, has attended the
conference SPIE Optics + Photonics 2012, during August 12 - 16, 2012 in San Diego, CA,
USA on Officer Travel Grant provided by SPIE. She has presented a paper on “Development of
Low cost Optical Fiber Kit to promote Fiber Optics at School Level”, a result of hard work of
our chapter members under the mentorship of the faculty advisor, as well as participated in the
Optics Outreach Olympics.
I will fail in my responsibility if I forget to acknowledge our faculty advisor Dr. Amit Garg
without whom it is difficult to envisage the growth of ANDC SPIE CHAPTER at this rate. He

has been a great source of inspiration and his constant drive always keeps us in high spirits and
morale. He believes in giving the students opportunities so that they get maximum exposure to
do hands-on research at the Undergraduate level.
I have no doubt that our chapter has a bright future and will become one of the brightest stars in
the SPIE galaxy.

PARTICIPATION IN SPIE OPTICS+PHOTONICS 2011
Faculty member Mr. Vishal Dhingra and Pratik Chakravarty with Dirk in San Diego
Our chapter president Pratik Chakravarty got a very special and glorious opportunity to represent
the chapter and present a paper on „Laser based study of geometrical optics at school level‟ at SPIE
Optics + Photonics 2011, San Diego, California, USA. It was incidentally our first participation in a
conference outside India, a rare feat for an undergraduate student. Pratik‟s presence at the
conference proved to be a great help for the evolution of the chapter. His experience in USA proved
to be a source of inspiration for several fellow chapter members who now worked with much more
zeal and dedication towards the various projects and activities carried out under the chapter.

PARTICIPATION IN SPIE OPTICS+PHOTONICS 2012
SPIE Optics + Photonics 2012 was the
place and second time our chapter got to
interact with several other chapters from
all over the world. This year Phalguni
Mathur received the golden chance to
represent the chapter and present the
paper on the „Development of Low Cost
Optical Fiber Kit to promote Fiber
Optics at School Level‟. This year we
also participated in Optics Outreach
Olympics to present our Fiber Optic kit.
It is our hope that Phalguni‟s
participation and experience in the
conference helps in the taking the
chapter to a new level.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIBER OPTICS KIT
During the year 2011-12, our chapter chose to develop a low cost optical fiber kit to promote
fiber optics at school level. The members of the chapter were enthusiastically involved with the
project. We started with first going through the syllabus of XII grade under CBSE Board and
hence educating ourselves with the aspects of fiber optics taught at that level in schools. Once we
got the idea, we started on making the kit by testing various circuits that were to be included in
the kit. We developed a kit that could perform the following experiments:
I. Determine NA of a fiber
II. Determine bending losses in a fiber
III. Determine alignment losses in a fiber (Lateral (Vertical and Horizontal) and longitudinal)
IV. Demonstrating various types of fibers and connectors
V. Need for Optical communication
VI. Need of Optical fiber in communication
VII. Demonstrating analog communication using optical fiber
VIII. Demonstrating digital communication using optical fiber
IX. Demonstrating voice communication
X. Demonstrating Wavelength Division Multiplexing and its importance
After the development of the kit, we planned a demonstration at school. Our team started off by
first preparing questionnaires for the pre demonstration session and then on similar lines one for
the post demonstration session. Our team then conducted the demonstration as per the plans and
received an overwhelming response from the students as well as the school authorities.

PARTICIPATION IN OPTICS OUTREACH OLYMPICS
The Low cost optical fiber kit developed by the student members of SPIE at Acharya Narendra
Dev College UNDER THE MENTORSHIP OF OUR Faculty Advisor was presented at the
Optics Outreach Olympics 2012. Enveloped in the fantastic party atmosphere of colorful lights
and music, the kit got a lot of appreciation from almost everybody present in the hall. The voice
link was the main attraction. Most of the visitors were literally playing with the voice link. There
was hardly any second when our stall was short of visitors. It was a very good experience for the
presenter, Phalguni Mathur to present the kit and receive an awarding feedback from all the
visitors.
We hope to carry forward the trend and celebrate optics at the international forum of such great
magnitude.
