Parish Book Study Pick up your copy of our Parish Book, “New Horizons for Christian Unity” in the gather-
ing space of the church. This book was published right here in Wichita and was written
by Monsignor Leon McNeill along with Reverend John O’Brien. It is a commentary on
Vatican II’s Decree on Ecumenism. (FYI, Ecumenism is the modern movement towards
Christian unity). As Catholics we are called to do everything possible to promote Chris-
tian unity. And as Pope Francis has said, “Christian unity will not appear suddenly as a
miracle, but will be given to the followers of Christ step by step as they walk together
and work together.” And read together. Check the Parish Website for reflection ques-
tions under the Faith Formation/Adult education tab.
Youth Religious Education Religious Education students in K-8th grade continue to meet each Wednesday evening.
We recently prayed a Rosary for Life on Wednesday, January 21st to join our efforts
with those participating in the March for Life in Washington DC.
High school Religious Education students continue to meet on most Sunday evenings
from 5-6:30. All high school students in the parish are welcome and encouraged to
attend! In February classes will be held on the 1st, 8th, 22nd. March class will be held
on the 1st and Movie Night is scheduled for the 8th (watch for more details soon).

Bishop Carl Kemme to
Visit the Church of
the Holy Spirit
On Feb. 21st and 22nd, Bishop Kemme will
make a pastoral visit to Church of the Holy
Spirit. He will hear confessions and cele-
brate the Masses that weekend and will
preach the homily. He will also have an
opportunity to visit with parishioners at
the CYM dinner Saturday night and at Bis-
cuits and Gravy on Sunday morning.
Weekends are very brief when they ar-
rive—late Saturday afternoon to midday
Sunday—but Bishop Kemme’s visit will be
a welcome blessing to our community.
Bishop Kemme is taking this year and next to visit every institution and parish in the diocese to get to know the people and the circumstances of ecclesial life in Wichita and SEK. What a blessing from a shepherd who cares so much for the people! Please pray for him and his intentions and for his safety as he journeys across the diocese.

Altar Society News and Notes
Before we get too far into 2015, Altar Society would like to thank everyone who helped with, worked
at, or attended the Spirit Bazaar in November. Our annual event was a great success and we realize it
would not have been possible without the involvement of so many members of our parish!
We decided to use a portion of the bazaar proceeds to do some sprucing up at church. We recently
had all the chairs in the sanctuary and the Adoration Chapel cleaned. It has been several years since
this was done and they were overdue for a refresh. The furniture in the Gathering space was beyond
refreshing, so we replaced it with new couches, chairs, and tables. We hope you will enjoy using
them and that you’ll treat them as your own – i.e.” they are not trampolines”. Next up, we will con-
tract the quarterly cleaning of the large, high-up church windows.
Though winter is still with us, we are looking ahead and making lots of plans for the coming year.
Lent will be here soon, followed of course by Easter. Watch for information regarding the purchase
of Easter lilies to honor or remember your loved ones. And, once again we will host a reception im-
mediately following the Holy Saturday services on April 4. At this time we will honor the candidates
we have just welcomed into our faith family. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us for this
special time.
The Garage Sale we held last year was a big success (not to mention a TON of work). But we learned
a lot and most of the soreness is gone, so we have decided to do it again this year on May 7, 8, and
9th. Once again, we’ll be at “our spot” near the corner of Maize Rd and Maple. We’re asking you to
please keep us in mind as you start your spring cleaning (or maybe finish putting away your Christmas
decos?). We need your items for our sale, and we can work with you to transport large items.
A reminder that Altar Society helps out with the bingo games at Goddard Medicalodge on the first
Wednesday of each month. These are held at 2:15 p.m. and last about an hour. The residents are
fun to work with, so if you have some time to spare we can use your help. We also supply the prizes
for the bingo - if you have any suitable small items or trinkets to donate we’d be happy to have them.
The ladies at Medicalodge always like to win jewelry – clip earrings and necklaces go over well. And,
of course, they ALL like to win quarters!
Included in this edition of the Paraclete is information on the new Dillons Community Rewards pro-
gram – please take some time to look it over and get signed up. It’s easy to do and that’s all it takes
to earn money for our parish. We are competing with some very large parishes for a share of the
money Dillons donates, so we need help from everyone in our parish.
Finally, we have updated our bulletin board in the Gathering space – stop by and take a look for the
most current information and happenings. You’ll find a calendar of events, as well as extra copies of
the minutes of our meetings. And speaking of meetings, all ladies of the parish are encouraged to

A Word from Fr. Mike
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Lent is upon us. We anticipate it with a three-day parish mission led by Casting Nets. Infor-mation on this is elsewhere in this Paraclete. Then we inaugurate the Season of Purification and Enlightenment, practicing the disciplines of fasting, praying, and almsgiving preached during the parish mission. In order to help us in the almsgiving, we are asking each person in the parish to take up a commitment to provide food for the Food Pantries served by Holy Spirit. We even have a handy phone/tablet app you can download and use to see what is needed. With over 400 families, we could easily meet our monthly promise to the Food Pantries if each family could commit to buying two cans of chicken, two containers of peanut butter, and a box of pasta or two cans of soup each month. Hungry families and children would be most grateful. In order to help us in our praying, we have additional opportunities for Mass and confessions during Lent as well as numerous hours available for prayer before the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Here is our Lenten schedule: Tuesday 8am Mass Wednesday 8am Mass, 6pm Confessions, 6:30pm Mass Thursday 8am Mass, Dove Estates Friday 8am Mass, 6pm Confessions, 6:30pm Mass, 7pm Stations of the Cross The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is available 24/7 for worship of the Eucharist. For most hours of the day and evening, the Blessed Sacrament is Exposed. Can you give an hour a week? Look in the bulletin to see the hours we are most urgently in need of. None of those work for you? No problem! Take an hour that does. The more people who cover any given hour, the richer our prayer life will be and the stronger our commitment to this important apostolate. In order to help us in our fasting, we have only one main meal and two smaller meals on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We abstain from meat on these days and on all Fridays in Lent. With the Rice Bowl, we can take the money we save from our fasting and bring it on Holy Thursday night to offer for the hungry worldwide. In order to help us in our holiness: fasting, praying, and almsgiving are graces offered to us by God. Peace be with you.

Holy Spirit Parishioners,
THANK YOU to those of you who have been using the Dillon’s gift card program! This last year
we made $1,260! This coming year Dillon’s is making the process
to help the CHS Altar Society even easier and everyone can help!

as the reloadable gift card program, and launching “Community
Rewards” on February 1. You can easily help Church of the Holy
Spirit’s Altar Society earn funds by registering your existing Plus
Shopper’s Card! Enrollment is fast and simple. Once you register
your card there is nothing more for you to do this year.

Sanctuary Enhancement
In the months of October and November, the Sanctuary Enhancement Committee met with
the design architects from Law Kingdon to discuss revisions to conceptual enhancement de-
sign of the current sanctuary. In the discussions, members of the Music Ministry were includ-
ed to provide feedback on several proposals for the location of the organ, piano and seating
for cantors & choirs. As a result of these discussions, in early January the seating for cantors
& choirs was moved as well as the organ and piano relocated. This change is a trial to deter-
mine if the location will be well-suited as a permanent location after the completion of the
sanctuary renovation. The Sanctuary Enhancement Committee would like to thank the Mu-
sic Ministry for their participation in the discussions and their feedback on the proposed de-
sign and the relocation.
In December, sample window film was installed on three of the high windows located in the
sanctuary. This temporary installation is to determine which window film would do a better
job of blocking the sun and improve the comfort for parishioners and guests during Mass plus
reduce potential UV damage from the sunlight. Based on the feedback from parishioners and
in reviewing manufacturer’s specifications, the silver window film seems to be good choice. A
final decision is expected in early spring.
Upcoming activities include getting budget estimates on maintenance items such as fixing the
cracks in the drywall, fixing the holes in the drywall behind the two big brown speakers after
they are removed, painting the walls in the sanctuary, re-staining the wood beams and fixing
the grout in the altar platform area.
We anticipate the spring and early summer will be busy as we review the budget estimates
and finalize the schedule for the maintenance items. We ask for your continued prayers for
our parish and school community as we continue the journey of Building on Each Other.
Music Ministry area:
The new arrangement seems to be working fairly well. There have been a few adjustments in
the area as different cantors and choirs have used the new arrangement. A new cantor stand
has been added for the cantors to place their song books and the stand does have some book
storage built into it. Law Kingdon has done a simple floor plan incorporating the new ar-
rangement for a reference.

Other Sanctuary Improvements
As we have discussed before, the Catholic Education Addition will be the priority but approxi-
mately $25,000 has been allocated for maintenance items within the sanctuary. The items
include fixing the cracks in the drywall and the tile on the altar platform, re-staining and seal-
ing the wood beams, painting the sanctuary space and placing window film on the high win-
dows.
We have been testing 3 options for the window film and the window film, located on the win-
dow closest to the Holy Spirit window, seems to do the best job of blocking the sun. We have
received a very reasonable quote to apply this film to the remaining windows along with a
trimmed border to enhance the look.
Law Kingdon will provide an interior designer to help in the selection of the paint color that
will help us short-term as well for the long term design when big renovation happens. We do
not have a date yet when the interior designer will be available.
Over the next several weeks, we will be working to get bids from paint contractors, drywall
contractors, tile contractors and paint. Based on the cost estimates, we will need to decide
which items we move forward with if the bids are higher than the $25,000 allocated.
Hopefully, we will be able to have this work start in the spring depending on the activities
scheduled for the church such as weddings, graduation etc.
Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity
through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this year of Con-
secrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspi-
ration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to
you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling for the sons and daughters who, having found
the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord,
Jesus Christ, you Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for
ever and ever. Amen

There are more churches in Las Vegas than casinos. During Sunday services at the
offertory, some worshippers contribute casino chips as opposed to cash. Some are sharing their winnings - some are hoping to win. Since they get chips from so many different casinos, and they are worth money, the Catholic churches are required
to send all the chips into the diocese for sorting. Once sorted into the respective casino chips, one junior priest takes the chips and makes the rounds to the casinos turning
chips into cash. And he, of course, is known as The Chip Monk.
This information is for Catholics only. It must not be divulged to non-Catholics.
