Our Spring Cleanup Campaign encourages
residents, businesses, schools and
community groups to organize cleanup
events in St. John’s.
Between April and August of 2014,
there were 177 cleanups registered
and completed, including over 8000
volunteers. These volunteers cleaned
up around their homes, businesses,
churches, schools, parks, playing fi elds
and even parking lots, just to name a
few. Clean St. John’s understands the
importance of giving volunteers an
opportunity each year to get involved in
their community and take responsibility
for their environmental surroundings.
Being part of the Clean St. John’s
Cleanup Campaign is easy. Groups
simply register online on our website at
www.cleanstjohns.ca. Clean St. John’s
provides free garbage bags, prizes, and
garbage pickup to registered cleanups.
Additionally, we encourage groups to use
the services that the City of St. John’s
provides to help keep our
city litter-free, such as the
bulk and metal pick up, and
the hazardous waste drop
off at the regional Waste
Management Facility.
There are many benefi ts
to this program. Firstly,
cleanups show that people
who use an area care about its
appearance. Crime is less likely
to occur when a neighborhood
is clean and frequently used by
residents. Secondly, cleanups
educate and inform the
participants and those that are
directly impacted that their
community is cared for, safe,
appreciated and respected.
Finally, it strengthens the community ties
of those involved in the cleanup. Most
importantly, all of these benefi ts have a
lasting, positive impact.
