About Srikakulam District
Srikakulam is a district of Andhra Pradesh state with its administrative headquarterslocated at Srikakulam city. It has been proved that there was the human inhabitation atSangamayya Konda and Dannanapeta during Stone Age and Iron Age periods. The mainpart of Dannanapeta Iron Age megalithic site is a large single capstone as a dolmen with36 ft in length and 14 ft in width and 2 ft in thickness. The Jain monuments and Buddhistremnants found near the Sangamayya Konda are the evidences of the fact that theplace was ruled by Jain and Buddhist rulers for a long period. Srikakulam was emerged asa separate district in the map of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1950 after it carved outfrom Visakhapatnam district. Then in November, 1969 the district had lost its 63 villagesfrom Saluru taluk and 44 villages from Bobbili taluk since all these villages were mergedwith the newly formed Gajapathinagaram taluk of Visakhapatnam district. Again in May,1979, the district had undergone some major territorial changes and finally, the presentday’s Srikakulam district came into existence.
Geographically, the district lies at 18°30'N latitude, 83°90'E longitude and 21 m altitude .The district encompasses a geographical area of 5,837 sq km and it is bounded by Orissaon the North, Vizianagaram district on the South and West and Bay of Bengal on theEast. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the districtwas 949.6 mm in the year of 2015-16.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 revenue sub divisions namely Srikakulam,Palakonda and Tekkali. Moreover, it comprises 38 sub-districts, 12 towns and 1,802villages. There are 3 parliamentary and 10 assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 census the district has population of 27,03,114 persons out of which13,41,738 are males and 13,61,376 are females . The district has sex ratio of 1015(females for every 1000 males). In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in thedistrict was 6.52% including 6.49% are males and 6.56% are females. The major religionin the district is Hindu with 98.66% of the total population. As per 2001 census theprincipal language in the district is Telugu with 92.00%.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. More than half of itspopulation are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chiefagricultural products in the district are coconut, cashew nut, jack, maize, onion, etc.The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the districthelps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The irrigation facility of thedistrict is very well developed. Some of its foremost irrigation projects are VamsadharaProject, Narayanapuram Anicut, Thotapalli Regulator, Pydigam Project, etc. The economyof the district is also dependent on industrial sector to some extent. The corepharmaceutical company namely Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is situated at Pydibhimavaramwhich contributes in its economy remarkably . In the year 2015-2016 the gross domesticproduct in the district was Rs 20,98,600 lakh at current price.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. Itprovides a platform for higher education. Some of the colleges in the district areaffiliated to the oldest university of the district namely Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University.Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, established in the Srikakulam town is one ofthe most recognised medical institutes in the Andhra Pradesh state. As per 2011 censusthe literacy rate in the district is 61.74% including 71.61% are males and 52.08% arefemales.
Boddepalli Rajagopala Rao, a veteran Indian politician and a member of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd,5th, 6th and 7 th Lok Sabha from the Srikakulam constituency of the Andhra Pradeshstate was born on 12th March, 1923 at Amadalavalasa in the district. He was a memberof the Indian National Congress party.
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from differentparts of the country as well as world. Arasavalli sun temple, located in the Arasavallivillage is dedicated to the Hindu solar deity Surya and earlier it is popularly known asHarshavalli means abode of joy. Legends believe that it was constructed in the 7 th
Century AD by the rulers of Kalinga. Sri Mukhalingam, another renowned temple in theSrikakulam district was built in the 9th century on the left bank of Vamsadhara. It has agroup of three temples with the deities of Mukhalingeswara, Bhimeswara and Someswarawhich was built by the Eastern Ganga dynasty kings. Salihundam, a pious place locatedat a distance of 16 km from Srikakulam town on the right bank of the river Vamsadharah a s a number of Buddhist stupas and a huge monastic complex on a hillock.Kalingapatnam , situated 35 km away from Srikakulam is also a perfect tourist’sdestination since it has the shrine of a famous Sufi saint and an old lighthouse.Kurmanatha temple , located in a village called Sri Kurmam 13 km away from Srikakulamtown is devoted to Kurma Avatar (Tortoise) of Lord Vishnu.
