Today we blow the whistle on what it takes to reach thetop of your sport and to achieve success on and off the fieldTHIS year we have already seen manygreat sporting feats in both the SummerOlympic and Paralympic Games. Haveyou ever dreamt of competing at a ma-jor sports event or pulling on the greenand gold to represent Australia in asporting arena? Perhaps you haveplayed in a grand final for your localsporting club, crossed the line first in arace or have watched your favouriteteam lift the winner’s trophy. We all likethe feeling we get when we as indivi-duals or our team achieves somethingon the sporting field. In Australia, weare very passionate about sport becauseit has played an important role in shap-ing our national identity.

GOOD SPORTEveryone likes to win. No one reallyenjoys losing, but when you’re playingsports, there is always going to be awinner or a loser (unless the game endsin a draw). An important part of playingsports is good sportsmanship. How youand your team act before, during andafter a game says as much about you asa sportsperson as does the skills youuse while competing. No one likes toplay with a ‘bad loser’.

THE TROPHYThe culmination of most sporting eventsis the presentation of trophies, medalsor prizes to the winner and runners-upof the contest. Trophies have markedvictories since ancient times and havecontinued to serve as proof of anachievement. The word trophy is de-rived from words meaning “a spoil, prize of war or monument to victory”.
