Adoration–Tuesday, February 23rd @ 3:00 PM in the Upper Church
From the Pastor’s Desk LIVE THE MASS
A dear brother priest friend of mine often says to me, “Jeff, we have to live the Mass.” As Catholics, we attend Mass. Yet the experience of attending or praying the Mass can be different for each person.
Some people like more music at Mass, others like less. Some like long homilies, others like shorter ones. Some like going to Mass in the morning at the crack of dawn, others like going at the end of the day. Some like the Latin Mass, others like the Novus Ordo Mass (current Mass).
Although the experience may be different, the essence of the Mass remains the same. We are called to unite ourselves to Christ the High Priest who is crucified and risen at the altar. Living the Mass is uniting our sufferings, hopes, and joys to Christ crucified at the altar. A priest I know who suffers immensely has repeatedly told me with great love: “I thank God for giving me the strength to offer another Mass.”
In the great Christian classic, The Life of Jesus Christ by Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, we see the way that Jesus embraced His Cross:
As soon as the cross was thrown on the ground before Him, Jesus fell on His knees,
put His arms around it, and kissed it three times while softly uttering a prayer of thanksgiving to His Heavenly Father for the Redemption of mankind now begun.
In a similar way, the priest kisses the altar where Christ is offered for the salvation of the world. The priest embraces that he is another Christ who is embracing his sacrifice and is united to Christ the High Priest.
Every time we kiss a crucifix, make the sign of the cross with faith, hope and charity, receive Holy Communion with gratitude, we are living the Mass. When we long to be with Jesus again at Mass, and try to live our lives as a suffering servant of the Lord we are living the Mass.
Being a suffering servant is not to be understood as a disposition that is melancholy or without joy. By gazing upon the crucifix, the altar, and the Eucharist with faith, our sufferings have transcendent meaning. That meaning for us is that the mystery and power of the Cross transforms and unites our hearts to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As Padre Pio says: “It would be easier for the world to exist without the sun than without the Holy Mass.”
As we go through the doors of the Church to be with Jesus, let us go out living the Mass that we shared with Him. I wish you all a blessed beginning of the Season of Lent. Please know of my prayers for you during this great season of prayer and penance.
In Jesus and Mary,
Fiscal Report
Fortunately, the fiscal year of 2020 ended with the parish having a net surplus of $64,899. If it wasn’t for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that the parish received as a grant for $75,905, the parish would have had a deficit of -$11,006. We are currently applying for another PPP grant. Due to the pandemic, the collections have dropped by more than $140,000 in comparison to 2019. Anything extra you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you immensely for all that you have given to the parish. Your generosity is vital for the financial health of the parish. The sanctuary renovation was paid for in full by prior donations. Thank you for your love for the Parish of St. Barnabas the Apostle.
In Jesus and Mary,
First Reading Gn 9:8-15
God said to Noah and to his sons with him:
“See, I am now establishing my covenant with you
and your descendants after you
and with every living creature that was with you:
all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals
that were with you and came out of the ark.
I will establish my covenant with you,
that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed
by the waters of a flood;
there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth.”
God added:
“This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come,
of the covenant between me and you
and every living creature with you:
I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign
of the covenant between me and the earth.
When I bring clouds over the earth,
and the bow appears in the clouds,
I will recall the covenant I have made
between me and you and all living beings,
so that the waters shall never again become a flood
to destroy all mortal beings.”
The First Sunday in Lent
Beloved:
Christ suffered for sins once,
the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous,
that he might lead you to God.
Put to death in the flesh,
he was brought to life in the Spirit.
In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison,
who had once been disobedient
while God patiently waited in the days of Noah
during the building of the ark,
in which a few persons, eight in all,
were saved through water.
This prefigured baptism, which saves you now.
It is not a removal of dirt from the body
but an appeal to God for a clear conscience,
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who has gone into heaven
and is at the right hand of God,
with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.
Second Reading 1 Pt 3:18-22
The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert,
and he remained in the desert for forty days,
tempted by Satan.
He was among wild beasts,
and the angels ministered to him.
After John had been arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Rules of Fast and Abstinence
During the season of Lent the Church calls us to fast
and abstain. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fast
days. Fast means those between the ages of 18 and
59 limit themselves to one full meal and eat nothing
between meals. The other meals on a fast day are
light meals. All the Fridays of Lent, as well as Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday, are also days of
abstinence, which means that those 14 years of age
and older are to abstain from eating meat.

CRS Rice Bowl for Lent Please take home a CRS Rice Bowl for Lent. CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services' faith-in-action program. It offers opportunities for your family to engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It's an opportunity for us as a parish/school to come together as a community and reflect on what it means to live out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. During the 40 days, we will encounter stories of people around the world in Guatamala, Uganda, Gaza and other places where CRS is at work. We'll be invited to eat simple, meatless meals each Friday. And, through the stories, we'll learn about the principles of Catholic social teaching and ways we can put them into action during Lent and beyond. We will see how our prayers, fasting and almsgiving can give hope to those worldwide that are most in need.

Lent is often thought of as a time of sacrifice … a time to
“give up” things such as candy, bad habits and maybe even
the internet. Although these challenges help us prepare for
larger sacrifices in life, Lent does not have to be a time of
“giving up.” Rather, we can make it a time to “give” alms
and add something positive to our daily lives and the lives
of others. When it comes to almsgiving or helping the poor,
the Church makes it easy for us through our Lenten
program, ‘Giving, Not Giving Up.’ During the five Sundays
of Lent, every household is encouraged to bring their alms
to Mass each weekend or leave at the rectory during the
week.

The Decline of Teaching Factual American History in Public Schools - Part 2
At the beginning of the 20th century, social engineers embraced John Dewey's Pedagogic Creed of 1897 that said, "Every teacher should realize he is a social servant set apart for the maintenance of the proper social order and the securing of the right social growth. In this way the teacher is always the prophet of the true God and the usherer in of the true kingdom of heaven." (1)
Dewey, a philosopher, psychologist, and considered the "Father of American Education," became an agnostic/atheist and "replaced Christianity with a religion of his own, secular humanism," (2) that embraces human reason and secular ethics, while specifically rejecting religious dogma. Dewey was co-author of the Humanist Manifesto (1933), that believed the time has passed for belief in God, and that prayer and worship are to be replaced by efforts to promote social well-being. "His work provided a foundation and a foot in the door for the secular humanist movement...the dominant religion in America today," wrote Brad Harrub, author & researcher. (3)
"If you don't know history, then you don't know anything.
You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree.” - Michael Crichton, author
Thus, knowing John Dewey's philosophy, parents can understand why history has been made almost irrelevant in most American schools. America's actual founding on escape from religious persecution, individual liberty, Religious Freedom, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the best place for freedom, hope, and opportunity, has been replaced by efforts to undermine, ignore and diminish the country's founding principles.
"We cannot give up. America is too important ... and so is the future of our children. ... Let us in 2021 remain together as a community and keep proclaiming the authentic American ideals and principles - our historic values," said Rabbi Aryeh Spero, Conference of Jewish Affairs.
