Dear Folks,

‘Tis that time of year. First, the bishop turned seventy-six last week. May God bless him with continued health and authentic holiness. Now the rest. Fr. Fimian and I are

hearing Confessions at school and CCD. Back to school night is a scant thirty six hours away. Confirmation interviews are finishing up for the eighth graders before the bishop comes for Confirmation next month. The Redskins are up and moving, if not running. The little finishing school next to St. Mary’s, in South Bend, has a football team that is also up… and walking. Hmm? It is going to be a long Fall season. Ok, Ok, Ok. Fair play, my White Sox are dead in the water and won’t be going to the World Series this year. But, we who believe in the resurrection know they will be back…one day. Ha! Ha! Ha! Speaking of fall. Oktoberfest is just around the corner. The ladies Maybach recently assured me that forty homemade German pies will be offered for the big event. Yeah Boy! Nothing better than a homemade pie. Going to Chez Maybach is like going home. Best home cooking, with plenty to go around. The only difference from home is … I don’t get a lecture about losing weight after the fabulous feast is finished. Ha! Ha! Ha! This weekend the kids in the parish Youth Group will be talking before all the Masses. It is a quick opportunity to say thank you to everyone in supporting their efforts in going to the diocesan work camp a few months ago. You know, it is good, and very important, to assist in the work camp projects. It takes us out of the comfortable box that is our wonderful community to find Christ among the broken and the poor. The kids did well and could never have done it without the support of the parish. It is appropriate, for them to say “Thank You” to the people who got them there. God bless the people whose lives they touched. Where but for the grace of God goes any one of us. Let us pray for one another. Speaking of “Outside the Box,” please watch for notices in the bulletin from the Knights of Columbus on collecting goods for the people in Louisiana. In case you are wondering the hurricane season for Louisiana carries for another six weeks. The nightmare of the floods is not over yet. I am also reminded of the stories of water-moccasins (large and deadly snakes) and alligators wandering in the flood zones…warranting the carrying of guns for personal protection. Oh, my heavens. Alligators. Collegiate answer: Two of the great adventures in ancient archeology deal with finding the Ark of Covenant, containing the tablets for the Ten Commandments and finding the head of St. John the Baptist. Pope Benedict XVI holds that the head on display in San Silvestro in Capite in Rome is that of John the Baptist. Pope St. Sylvester I, was the Pope who baptized the Emperor Constantine, whom he healed of Leprosy. “In Capite” refers to “The first,” in the Pope’s title. Greetings, I hope all is well with you and yours. Mrs. Copeland (pre-school director) and I will have a booth set-up from7:30-12:00pmonSunday, September 11for

the Ministry Fair. If you would like some additional information about SJES, please know that we would be happy to discuss all that St. John the Evangelist has to offer! Secondly, we will host our annual Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 14th at 7:00pmin Trinity Hall. The PTO will discuss their current financial status and elaborate on some upcoming events and fundraisers aimed at generating additional income for future school initiatives. After my brief presentation, parents will have the opportunity to visit their child/ren classroom and learn about the curriculum and other educational opportunities that are available at SJES. Our first round of online standardized testing will begin on Monday, September 11th. Please aid our instructional efforts by ensuring that our students are present, focused, and well-rested. This will act as a baseline so we can monitor student growth over the first semester, these results will serve as a resource to recognize strengths and identify potential areas for growth. May we continue to grow in God's grace and wisdom.

Orientation letter and other forms needed for the start of Preschool have been sent via email to all enrolled families. If you have not received it please let us know. Our first scheduled event for Preschool is our “Welcome Back to School” celebration on Thursday, September 22nd at 10:30am in Mercy Hall.

St. John’s School Extended Day Program

is looking for staff members for their morning and afternoon programs. The morning shift runs Monday-Friday 6:15am until 8:00am and the afternoon shift runs Monday-Friday 2:45pm-6:00pm. Starting wage is $9/hr. Applicants must be at least 18yrs of age & complete VIRTUS training. Staff will be trained in CPR and First Aid. This is a great way to get to know the wonderful students at our school and amazing staff of St. John’s. If interested please contact Shannon Lomax at [email protected].

St. John’s MOMs group is starting up with an interest meeting and play time for the little ones on Wednesday, September 21 at 9:30 AM in Mercy Hall. RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Please contact the Religious Ed Office at 347-2922 x209 if you are interested in becoming Catholic or if you are an adult who needs to be confirmed. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Preparation sessions are held on Wednesday evenings in the St. John School’s Art Room from 7 to 8pm. Classes have started but you are welcome to join us now through the weeks after Easter.

Lectors Needed! St. Johns is in need of additional volunteers to serve as lectors for the Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. The Saturday Mass is at 5:00pm and the Sunday Masses are at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:45am and 12:30pm. SEPARATED? DIVORCED? WIDOWED? Coping, a six week recovery program for separated, divorced, widowed individuals, begins on Sunday evening, October 16, 2016 from 6 – 8 pm. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website.

These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209.

In the early summer of 2015 we offered “Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals

Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives.

In the fall of 2015 “Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come” an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately

connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into

every time we celebrate the Mass.

In 2016 the Bible Study group covered “James: Pearls for Wise Living” described as a “book of wisdom.”

James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution.

THE WOMEN OF ST JOHN greatly appreciate the support that the parish has always given to all of our previous collection drives. The 2016-2017 schedule of collections is the following:

October and November – hats, mittens, gloves, and socks, for school age children

December and January – calendars These items are distributed to elementary schools, shelters, nursing homes and other organizations serving those in need. We thank you for your continued generosity.

Over the past few weeks, the Youth Ministry kids have been getting to know not just each other, but also ourselves and how we fit into Christ’s plan for His Church. One of the things we discussed was service to one another, and how seizing the opportunity to help out our brother and sisters and Christ can help us to become the best versions of ourselves. Speaking of volunteer opportunities…our first big one is coming up! The Youth Group has been asked to help man the cotton-candy/popcorn/snow-cone tent for the St. John’s 37th annual Oktoberfest; a wonderful venue that raises funds for the parish and enables hundreds of people to gather together to enjoy fun German Polka music, play games, have their faces hilariously painted, and more. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Who are Vincentians? Vincentians are ordinary, everyday people desiring to fulfill Christ’s command to love God and

our neighbor. Vincentians lead ordinary, everyday live in every imaginable line of work – or in retirement! Vincentians are not necessarily trained in any field of social work. Vincentians are people who are willing to give at least a little of themselves in service to others. Vincentians are people, who, for 183 years, have met to grow spiritually and to find ways to help those most in need. The 37th annual St. John’s Oktoberfest will be held on Friday & Saturday, 30 Sept. & 1 Oct. from 4 – 9 pm.

This is a great parish and community event. It is also St. John's largest annual fundraiser. Proceeds benefit St. John's Parish and School, Youth

difference in helping those you’ll never meet. The White Elephant Sale depends on two things, items to sell and lots of buyers. For the first, there’s still time to deliver donated items on Wed, Sep 28 from 9 am - 9 pm to Mercy Hall. Next, bring your neighbors and friends for some fun shopping on Fri, 9 am to 6 pm Sep 30 and Sat, 9 am to 3 pm Oct 1 in Mercy Hall. Volunteers with trucks to pick up goods before the sale are needed, and some volunteers for Sat afternoon hours to clean up after the sale.
