Annual Red Mass
for State’s Legal Community
The annual Red Mass for the state’s legal community
will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at 5:30 p.m. at
Holy Ghost Church in Providence. Monsignor Albert
Kenney, Vicar General of the Diocese of Providence, will be the
main celebrant and Father Ryan Connors, S.T.D., Professor of
Moral Theology at St. John’s Seminary will be the homilist.
The Red Mass is held annually for those who work in the judiciary
and other areas of public service in Rhode Island. The Mass
requests guidance from the Holy Spirit for all who seek justice, and
offers the opportunity to reflect on what Catholics believe is the
God-given power and responsibility of all in the legal profession.
All are welcome to attend this special celebration.
On September 23, two couples from our parish
joined 202 other couples in the twelfth annual
Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration at
the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul. We would
like to extend our congratulations to them on the
occasion of their anniversaries.

The Pastor’s Corner
I’ve noted with interest the number of people fishing off
the Newman Avenue Bridge. They seem very content
casting their lines, but I’ve never driven by when anybody is
reeling in a fish. A few friends of mine really enjoy fishing;
it’s relaxing and even contemplative for them. The classic
story of the fish that got away that was “THIS BIG” is always
amusing. It’s hyperbole, a Greek word that means “excess.”
It’s an exaggeration to catch our attention, to make a point
or, to show emphasis.
Jesus today uses four hyperbolic statements. The first
one is throwing someone into the sea with a millstone
around their neck if they lead a “little one to sin.” Jesus then
mentions maiming oneself by cutting off a hand or a foot;
and even gouging out one’s own eyes if these body parts
cause us to sin. Better to lose them and gain the Kingdom of
God than to keep them and be thrown into Gehenna (i.e. the
dump outside the walls of Jerusalem). Gehenna eventually
became the physical and spiritual image of hell. These
hyperboles make our eyes widen as we hear of such extreme
measures. He immediately gets our attention.
Getting to heaven is the goal, isn’t it? We don’t maim
ourselves to get “there,” we cooperate with grace, that is,
God’s love. Grace moves us along the path to holiness. I
find October to be a special month along the journey. Great
saints and models are held up to us: St. Therese (the Little
Flower), the Guardian Angels, St. Francis of Assisi
(remember the blessing of pets on Sat., Oct. from 10am -12
noon), St. John XXIII, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Luke, SS. John
de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues and their Companions, St. John
Paul II…and others. Women and men who responded to
their unique personal call to follow Jesus, and now the
Church recommends them for our own faith journey.
Deacon Needham mentioned last Sunday about the words of
the Gospel “coming off the page through us.” It surely did
for all these Christian witnesses who rejected the Gehenna of
self-will and chose instead to enter the Kingdom of God.
Look around! I see many saints in St. Margaret’s. All we
need are the eyes and ears attuned to holiness.
Enjoy the Autumn!
Monsignor Darcy
