BY SHARING GOD’S LOVE IN THE CHURCH COMMUNITY
THROUGH SPIRIT-FILLED LITURGIES,
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, AND SERVICE TO OTHERS.
2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 25, 2012 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN May 10, 2015 Sixth Sunday of Easter
A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pax et Bonum!
Hello! Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on this the Sixth Sunday of our Easter Season! We especially welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for Mass this weekend. Today is also Mother’s Day, so we celebrate and give thanks to God for all of our mothers, grandmothers, Godmothers, and all of those special people who performed that unique and nurturing role in all of our lives, those both living and deceased. It is a special day to show our appreciation to those, who unfortunately, we don’t always remember to thank or be grateful for! God bless all of our Moms today!
Today we want to congratulate and recognize Miss Sydney Luk, the daughter of Tommy Luk and Shirley Cappas. We have recently received word from Holy Cross Family Ministries, out of North Easton, Massachusetts, that Sydney has won one of their coveted, “Try Prayer! It Works!” Awards for her poem, “Being About the Work of my Father.” This is an international contest that is conducted in 14 countries. Entries are judged on content, ability to capture and interpret the theme, artistic/technical proficiency, and adherence to the rules. Sydney won out of thousands of other entries from Catholic schools, religious education programs in parishes, and other organizations. Quite obviously, we are very proud of Sydney and congratulate her and her family on this special honor.
Our Parish Religious Education program concluded last weekend. As well as both our High School Youth Group, TRUTH, and our Jr. High Youth Group, HOPE, have also finished their Spring schedules. And we are now less than a month a way from the end of the school year. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of those who teach our children and our young people about their Faith in all of our Parish’s programs and ministries. The number of volunteers that it takes to catechize and form young Catholic Christians in their Faith here at St. Maria Goretti is truly staggering! And yet, every year, we have hundreds of extraordinarily generous individuals who step forward to share their Faith with the next generations of the Church. I am so grateful for each and every one of you who have helped out this past year in all of these various ministries. Our volunteers make this happen, from our preschoolers, all the way through our high schoolers! May God bless each and every one of you and reward you for your goodness!
As we head into summer, once again I remind you that we don’t take a vacation from our Faith. We want everybody, our entire Parish family, to continue to come to Mass, and get involved, and continue building the Kingdom of God even over these next few months of summer. If you are going to be traveling this summer, please make provisions for attending Mass. Sometimes, one of the great joys of traveling is getting to go to Mass other places and to see how they pray and how they do things. Some of our best ideas that we have used here at St. Maria Goretti has come from people’s experience at other churches in the summer, when they were traveling. When you aren’t traveling, we’re hoping that you will be here with us this summer, as continue to grow closer to God every week.
St. Maria Goretti Parish also needs your continued financial support all year long, and most especially in the summer time. The bills don’t quit coming just because we are on vacation, or we’re going to a graduation, or we attend Mass at another parish. If you are going to be traveling, please remember to send your donation in or drop it by the Parish Offices. We need everybody’s help all year long!
Next Sunday is the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. Our Diocese, like most in the United States, transfers the Holy Day from Thursday to Sunday, so that more people can be here for the Feast. The Easter season is quickly drawing to a close. Pentecost Sunday follows a week later, May 24, and then we have the official end of the Easter season.
Let’s make the most out of this time! May we continue to praise and glorify God always!
In Christ, Fr. Kevin
Don’t just go to church. Be the Church!
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with
everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our
Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Andrew & Nadine Powell, Kathleen Scheu, Mary Beth Hurst

Discipleship: Do What He Did
On May 3, we read from the Gospel of John about the “Vine and the Branches.” Pope Francis explained this recently as “to remain in Jesus is to do the same that he did. To do good, to help others, to have joy.”
While discipleship is about imitating Christ, it is not a solitary issue. Discipleship is relational. “Am I close to the Vine which gives me life - or am I far away from Jesus?” Chances are—as we remember from the para-ble of the Prodigal Son - the Father (God) has not moved anywhere—it is ourselves that have gone astray. “If we detach ourselves from him, we are Christians in
word only, but not in life.” —Pope Francis (May 3)
What are some practical things we can do to help our Discipleship?
• Pray Pray (talk to God). It doesn’t have to be formal prayer, just talk to God as a close friend. • Read the ScripturesRead the Scriptures. They contain God’s very words. Pray as you read. How is God talking to you? • Stay relational. Stay relational. God gave us our humanity to “make visi-
ble” the love of God which is invisible.
Ultimately, all of those “practical things” require each of us to do something. To quote the lyrics to a current song by Matthew West, “I just couldn’t bear the thought of people living in poverty, children into slav-ery, the thought just disgusted me. So I shook my fist at Heaven and said ‘God why don’t you do something?’ He said ‘I did. I created you.’ ”
There are lots of ways to be involved in the mission of St. Maria Goretti, and we need EVERYONE to be a part of that mission. Shepherd’s Gate Food Pantry, St. Fran-cis Ministry, Italian Festival, Respect Life, Silver Angels, bible studies, Spring Fling, Angel Employment Network, Liturgical ministers, Catechists, adoration, CRHP....how can you help out?
In Christ,
Brad Sponhauer Director of Discipleship

PHOTOS, GET YOUR PHOTOS! Sports and Daddy/Daughter Dance photos are availa-ble in a black basket on the information table in the Church Narthex. If you haven’t seen your athlete’s team and individual pictures or your daughter’s delightful dimples, check out the basket after Mass this weekend.
CALLING ALL SMG UNIFORMS! It’s spring clean up time—that time of year when all of SMG’s sports participants need to check around the house or school to see if there are any uniforms in the lockers, closets, or under beds that need to be re-turned. Please take a look and send them in now.

FROM THE NURSE Medical papers: The Nurse Office is updating all medi-cal care plans. We are sending medical sheets home by e-mail and in large yellow envelopes. If your student brings home a yellow envelope, you have medical pa-pers that need to be signed by you and your doctor and returned by the first day of school. Schedule your ap-pointments now and call the nurse office for any medi-cal questions.
EpiPen news: The Nurse Office now carries a “stock” Ep-iPen for anaphylactic “allergy” emergencies. This does NOT take the place of student’s prescription EpiPens but is available for emergencies such as multiple bee stings or a student experiencing a new allergic reaction. The EpiPen is stored on the nurse office door and all staff are trained to give the EpiPen as needed. If the EpiPen is used, parents will be called and an ambulance will be called and your student would be transported to an emergency room. Parents, when filling your Epinephrine prescriptions, make sure the device expires after May 2016 to last through the school year. Also, if you want your student to carry their own EpiPen with them, you must have a doctors order for “permission to carry.” We will talk to your student and make sure your student is trained in proper use and administration of the EpiPen.
Hepatitis A requirement: All incoming kindergarten stu-dents must have two Hepatitis A immunizations spaced at least six months apart. Schedule your ap-pointments early to complete this requirement. This is the 2nd year this law is in effect. Older students are “grandfathered” in and do not need the shot.
