Let 2017 be a Time to Deepen Your Catholic Faith: I’m sure that many of you enjoyed giving and receiving
gifts during the Christmastide. It’s fun! However, my greatest wish for all of us is to receive the gift of a deeper, richer faith in God this year. Our world needs the love and truth which Jesus brought to us over 2,000 years ago more than ever. Let us be committed to living out our Catholic faith, being active in our parishes, and sharing God’s love and mercy in 2017. At our Christmas Masses, we handed out a book to each family which explains the biblical basis of our Catholic beliefs. The book has short chapters that can be read independently. There will also be copies of the Rediscover Jesus book and a more in depth Rediscover Catholicism book available in the church entrances for whomever would like to take them to read or share with others.
Year End Giving: As we celebrate the joy of the Christmas season and New Year, please know that your finan-cial support is deeply appreciated and needed for the operation of our parishes and Catholic schools. God bless!
Fr. John’s Notes: Octave Day of Christmas: Mary, the Holy Mother of God: Today is the Church’s oldest celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also designated as the World Day of Prayer for Peace. There can be no
better way to start the New Year than to honor our Blessed Mother and pray with her for peace in our world. As we pray together today at God’s invitation, let us be mindful of how the Holy Mother of God cares for the Church and the world that her Son died to save.
Christmas Thank You’s: I would like to thank Fr. Bill Seipp for helping with our Christmas Masses. His assistance is deeply appreciated
and we are blessed with his service to our parishes. Thank you to everyone who has very generously supported our parishes throughout the year and at Christmastime. May God’s love and blessings be with you and your family in 2017!
New Year’s Prayer: God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to
forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and
our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put
aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.
REMEMBRANCE: As we say farewell to 2016, it is a good time to remember the people who were baptized, married and who died this past year from our parishes.

St. Mary’s Redecoration Project: The work to repair and redecorate the interior of St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church will begin very soon. This project will address the disrepair of the church interior and
keep St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church both beautiful and functional for another generation. The church was last repainted in the early 1980’s which is over 30 years ago. John C. Kaiser Company from Dubuque, IA will be completing the work with a proposed base plan bid of $70,000. This will include: 1. Repairing the loose plaster in the church
ceiling and walls 2. Adhering a thin vinyl layer over the
plaster (new technique to replace dry-walling)
3. Painting the main church and sanctuary If additional funds are received, the parish council also hope to complete the following projects 1. Installing new carpet/wood flooring in
the sanctuary 2. Adding a bathroom on the main floor
and new access ramp (A grant from the Apostolate to the Handicapped, Inc. has been received to fund most of this project.)
Currently after a parish pledge drive, over $62,500 has been saved for the project and they are working to raise the additional $7,500 for the repairs and redecorating. Please contact Fr. John or a parish council member for more information or to make a donation.

John for his generous gift of the books that were handed out at Mass and are available at the back of church. Reflection: “And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” Luke 2:19 Mary is the perfect role model for living a stewardship lifestyle. She listened to God and said “yes” to His invitation to be the Holy Mother of His son. She also trusted in the God’s providence on a daily basis. As we start a new year, take time every day to listen to how God is calling you; trust that He has a better plan for you than you could ever imagine.

Mary, the Holy Mother of God January 1, 2017
Celebrate Life: The beginning of a new calendar year brings us a special joy and hope. It is a reminder that time is a gift of God, given to us from His eternity,
for us to use to prepare for eternity. The passing of each year and each day is meant to be an exchange with God: He gives us time, and we give our days and years back to Him in service and love, bringing as much good as possible into the world and into the lives of others. The New Year is an opportunity to resolve, above all, to serve God faithfully: to believe more firmly, to hope more ardently, to love more generously. That is what makes a new year “happy,” and that is what leads us to the happiness that never ends.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS: “Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the
Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
