SUNDAY MESSENGERCHRISTMAS DAY DECEMBER 25, 2016
Today we celebrate the birth of the world’s Savior. The hymns and readings remind us that the Son of God was born into this world at a specific time and place. This is a celebration of more than an idea or a philosophy. It is the coming of God to be one of us and to join his divine life to our humanity, thus joining things earthly and things heavenly into one new life. That life is ours to share with God, with each other and with all the world.
The first two readings from Holy Scripture look forward (in the case of Isaiah) to the coming of Christ, and (in the Epistle to the Hebrews) remind us that it was nothing less than God himself who came to us. As God sent his child Jesus, so he has adopted us by water and the Holy Spirit as God’s children.
The Gospel reading is John’s great hymn of the Incarnation (the becoming flesh of God’s Word). The Word, made flesh in Jesus, comes to unite himself to us in the Eucharist.
You are invited to join us in this celebration, regardless of your race or tongue or faith, for Jesus Christ is the salvation of all people in all times. We hope you will find in this service renewed certainty that God has visited his people. We know that it is in this birth that the deepest and best hopes of humankind are met. May the holy child of Bethlehem be born in our hearts this day.
