Term 3, Week 5 Monday 12th August, 2013

Thought for the Week

On the 15th August we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. It celebrates Mary’s total sharing in the new life won by her son’s death and resurrection. Mary’s life and death were a wonderful example of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Is there anything about Mary’s life, which could help me to be a better follower of Jesus?

Dear Parents Please make a big effort to say at least one decade of the Rosary each night as a family and talk about the role Mary played in Jesus life. The whole school is attending he Mass on Thursday at St. Brigid’s Church as it’s a holy day of obligation. 40 year Celebations A hard copy letter has been given today to every child. You have until Wednesday to finalise whether you are coming to the dinner or not. Around the Classrooms Lots of exciting activities are happening in the classes. Kinder are learning about Hot and Cold. They had the fire engine come to school and had a whale of a time using hoses and examining the truck.

Year 1 are busily creating Digital Books on the IPad and made yummy bread last week when they did the Parable of Yeast. Year 2 are quite excited learning about the various types of Transport and are off on their Transport

excursion tomorrow, seeing planes, travelling on the XPT and catching a bus. Year 3 have been adopted by the Terramungamine CWA. The ladies were guest speakers and very generously donated two books—100 facts on the Ocean and Mirror. The children are doing a project on Morocco.

Year 4 & 5 went on an excursion to Wambangalang and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Year 4 are immersed into Aboriginal artworks and Year 5 are doing a detailed study about Space and are learning how to give speeches.

Year 6 are little scientists doing hands on experiments on Saling, Sinking and Soaring and a few extra curricula activities—Gerard Yeo Shield and Debating

Diocesan Athletics Nine of our students travelled to Bathurst last Friday to compete in the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. Unfortunately none of our students finished in a position to gain selection in the Diocesan Athletics team but all should be proud of their efforts and achievement in reaching this level. I have heard some wonderful comments about our students’ behaviour and the tremendous support dis-played amongst the team members. Thanks also to Mr Steve McGuire and the staff of Catherine McAuley School Orange for hosting the carnival.

Debating In week three our debating teams ventured to St Mary’s Primary to compete in their first formal debate for the 2013 competition. Both teams did the school proud but did not come away with the wins. This Thursday after the Assumption Mass we host St John’s Primary, all the best of luck to our debaters. A massive thank you to Mrs Camilla Ward for the work she is doing with the debating teams. Greg Cant

Lachlan Connolly participated in the Diocesan Athletics last Friday. He is proudly displaying his two first places— 100m and 200m. Well done Lachlan, we are very proud of you.

Year 6 parents please take note of the amended date for the Reconciliation Evening. It is on Wednesday evening August 21st with 2 sessions, 5.30pm and 7pm. Confirmation Mass Practice Thursday 22nd August at 7pm at St Brigid’s (for all candidates attending Confirmation Masses at St Brigid’s Church) Wednesday 28th August at St Laurence’s (for all candidates attending Confirmation Masses at St Laurence’s Church)

Parents are invited to attend the Feast of the Assumption Mass on Thursday at St Brigid’s at 9.30am. Thursday’s feast celebrates Mary's Assumption into heaven. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. Try to take some time as a family to pray to Mary by saying the Hail Mary this week.

Please read the note about the choir for our Mass of celebration on the 25th August. We will be singing at the 9am Mass. We are really relying on support from our senior students. Please keep this date and time free as it will be a great honour for those taking part and a great way to support our school. Dates to Remember: CONFIRMATION Week 4 Home Groups August 12

ABLAZE's big kick off!

ABLAZE kicked off in the ‘Old Church’ at St Brigid’s Dubbo on Wednesday 31st July. And what a kick-off it had! 55 participants in years 5

& 6 joined a team of youth leaders and adult mentors to make the first youth rally high energy and action-packed. Over the 1, 1/2 hours

we joined in games, learnt songs and dances, talked about prayer, had a time of personal prayer, and finished with the compulsory pizza!

A great time was had by all.

We are all looking forward to the next big night: 6-7.30pm on Wednesday 14th August. See you there!

Fr Greg
