Connecting Churches to Change Our World
LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.
We are in a world that seems to demand that we live our lives out loud for everyone to see and hear. I resist that world as much as I can. I have a Facebook Page that I don’t update; a Twitter account that is DOA; an Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, a blog, and a host of other electronic places that lie dormant with only occasional glimmers of life. I am private by nature, and think what I had for lunch doesn’t matter to anyone other than my one friend who has the same commitment to finding the best BBQ in Texas. But many of you have been part of a prayerful journey with my family as our first grandchild was born this past September, and I wanted to thank you and let you know how he, his parents, and Pauline and I are doing. Jackson David Yancey was born on September 28, 2015. The prayerful concerns that earlier tests evidenced were found to be realized with a facial and cleft palate on the right side, with the right eye absent, with the orb present, and with most of his right ear and hearing canal not formed, as well as a portion of his right jaw. They called it “Craniofacial Microsomia.” We call him perfect. All the while, I would confess I have so much for which to be grateful. I’m grateful the cleft is not as severe as it could have been and that Jackson was able to accommodate a Nasal Alveolar Molding (NAM) device which will significantly improve what can be done in his first surgery this coming March. I’m thankful for the many doctors and nurses who provided such gracious care in the 40+ days he was in the NICU. I’m amazed at the way his parents have responded to skillfully caring for a child with a G-Tube and Tracheostomy while adapting well to their new normal. I’m so thankful that all of our families know and love Jesus and trust Him. Continue to trust Him.
I’m particularly grateful for the special gift of an amazing daughter-in-law. Hilary continues to be the blessing of a true daughter to our family and an outstanding wife and mom to Preston and Jackson. Upon deciding to move forward with Tracheostomy Hilary wrote the following words: “People will want to say you’re a kid with “special” needs. They might try to tell you or tell us that you’re so brave and we’re so brave, because we’re carrying all this extra stuff with us. But it’s not true. You are Jackson. Your needs are just your needs. And we love to make sure you have what you need.” “Today God reminded us that He gives breath to us. And for you, He is giving that gift through this trach for a while. But it is the same big, bold, wildly beautiful gift of life. And He is giving it to you no less miraculously or wondrously because He is giving it a different way.” So we will go hold you in a few minutes and tell you more about it. For now, I’m writing this down so that you know that from the first moments we decided, we knew that we were only making the path straight so that God could come give you what He longs to give you: lungs full
of His breath of life, and a heart full of His marvelous love.” So, in our family, we don’t see Jackson as “special,” “challenged,” “defect,” or a host of other descriptions that get assigned or labeled to children – he’s our Jackson, God’s perfect gift, reflecting the image of his creator and embodying the hope of renewed creation – just like we all are. For us this is not a matter of semantics, but theology. So, in this Christmas season where we gather in wonder at the miracle of the “Word became flesh and dwelt among us” I am reminded that each of us is part of a fallen creation and that we are a fallen people. Jesus came to us in the midst of our falleness, He “came into his own but His own knew Him not.” He came, He loved, He died, He rose again, He is coming back, and we are invited to join Him in relationship – the unholy with the Holy, the imperfect to the Perfect. They called it unbelievable. We call him Savior. In Kingdom service,
“Different by Design” Marriage Conference Event
January 23, 2016
Hosted by Spring Creek Baptist
Church
8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
in the Main Sanctuary $60 per couple
Registration fee includes conference, marriage survey, childcare and lunch
box from Chick-fil-a To register now, go to www.springcreekbaptist.org/upcoming events1 DIFFERENT BY DESIGN EVENT OVERVIEW Did you marry someone very different from you? Differences impact all areas of your marriage, from communication to parenting strategies, from spending to saving. God intends for these differences to unite two spouses, not divide them... for spouses to live as one, not two. The problem is that is until now, couples have not had a simple way to understand each other's unique strengths to build to meaningful oneness in marriage. EVENT FOCUS This event equips Christian couples like you to take this step - to discover and use your God-given strengths in your marriage, to value your spouse's strengths, and to blend. Your day will be filled with insightful teaching, experimental exercises, and
meaningful discussions that will strengthen your marriage relationship. WHAT COUPLES WILL LEARN Every Couple faces four inescapable areas of differences: problem solving, processing information, manage change and facing risk. These areas seam to drive a wedge in more relationships over time than any other. The conference will open your eyes to God's divine design or differences. Together you'll learn how to use your personal strengths to:
Design effective communication strategies
Problem solve more effectively
Exchange information that is meaningful and practical
Balance the scales of a transitioning home environment
Work together when making decisions
As part of your registration, you and your spouse will receive a short online assignment to fill out the Marriage Insights Profile questionnaire online. This assignment will take each of you about 8 - 10 minutes to complete independently, with no input from the other. After finishing, your responses will be instantly tabulated. You'll receive your personalized Marriage Insights Profile report online through your email inbox. Print a copy, review the results, and bring a copy to the conference.
