Vehicular guide signs are placed at points of decision along major roadways. They can also be used along long stretches to reassure drivers they are headed in the right direction. Destinations included on vehicular guide signs include Emergency, Parking, and building names. Departments and destinations interior to a building, other than Emergency, are not appropriate for this sign type.
Guide signs are limited in the number of destinations listed because drivers have a short period of time in which they can absorb the information on the sign. Destinations are grouped by arrow direction, and alphabetical within each arrow grouping. There are two exceptions to the alphabetical order, Emergency and Parking. Emergency is always the first destination within its arrow group, and Parking is the last destination within an arrow group. Arrows are organized left, right and straight ahead. When Emergency is one of the destinations on the sign, the arrow group for Emergency takes priority and is listed ahead of the other arrow groups. The arrow at the top of a destination group is always on its own line to designate direction information for the destinations below it, and arrow groups are separated by a rule line.
Campus Identifiers mark the boundary and entry points to OHSU sites. They include the full OHSU logo and the campus name. With the growing number of OHSU locations, it’s important to differentiate sites with the campus name at the vehicular entrance points.
Partner Hospital Sites: Replace the campus name with the partner hospital name.
Cx-1, Cx-2, Cx-2a and Cx-4
The logo flame is for identifying OHSU buildings from a distance. When the flame is located close to street level, it should be full color. When the flame is higher on a building, the logo should have maximum contrast to the building façade in either a solid dark grey or white.
Cx-3, Cx-3a
This sign serves the same function as the Cx-1 and Cx-2 signs by identifying the boundary and entry points to OHSU sites. It also includes general guide information and is appropriate for use at a Main Entrance or secondary campus approach.
Partner Hospital Sites: Replace the campus name with the partner hospital name.
Cx-5
Gx-0, Gx-1, Gx-2 and Gx-3The Gx-0 Extra Large Guide is used at campus entry points where there is not space for a large campus identifier, and along roads where the sign is set back from the street edge and the speed is greater than 25 mph. This sign will have limited future application, as it is larger than allowed by the Portland sign code.
The Gx-1c with LED board is for use near garage entrances to provide the opportunity to highlight temporary messages. Due to city ordinances, the use of variable-message signage is very restricted.
Gx-1 and Gx-2 sign types are to be used on single-lane roads up to 25 mph. The Gx-1 sign allows up to ten (10) spaces for arrows and destination names. The Gx-2 sign is shorter, providing seven (7) spaces for arrows and destination names.
Gx-3 sign is to be used to provide exiting information to vehicular traffic at a stop sign or within low-speed areas.
Pedestrian guide signs are utilized to provide direction to visitors once they’ve exited their vehicle. Because a pedestrian has more time to absorb the information than a driver, the text is smaller and more destinations can be included.
Partner Hospital and Clinic Sites: These signs can be used as shown. If the Gx-0 is desired, replace the logo with an approved partnership layout from the Graphic Standards. For sites without multiple patient parking areas, Parking can be alphabetized with the other destinations in the arrow group.

Building identification signs are used to identify the building name at eye level for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. There are two different styles of building identification. For healthcare buildings, the sign includes the full building name and either the location of preferred parking or the building address. The research and academic building identification signs have a silver footer with the three- to four-letter building abbreviation.
Ix-6
These individual letters are mounted to canopies above public entrances and drop-off locations at OHSU’s South Waterfront campus. The letters are silver during the day and illuminate white at night.
Partner Hospital Sites: Replace the entrance name with the partner hospital entrance name.
Ix-7
Flag signs like these can be used to provide guide and identification information perpendicular to traffic. The signs can be used for both pedestrian and vehicular information in areas where ground space is unavailable.
Partner Hospital Sites: These signs can be used as shown.

Px-1These sign types are used for parking garages or lots that service public and non-public parking. They are meant to be installed perpendicular to the path of traffic accessing the parking. In addition to providing information for the nearest building access points, they also include an area (either LED board or changeable message panel) where temporary messages can be displayed. Due to city ordinances, the use of variable-message signage is very restricted.
There are several options for parking identification based upon the built environment, type of parking and the vehicular approach to the parking entrance.
Partner Hospital Sites: All of these parking signs can be used as shown, but replace the alpha character with the universal Parking symbol.
Px-4This is a smaller version of the Px-1 freestanding identification sign, and is suitable for use at less public parking opportunities, and for lots that only service one building. The changeable message panel at the bottom is to be used to provide temporary parking designation information for special events.
Px-3 These sign types are for smaller garage access points where a visitor drives straight into the entrance and there is no space available for the freestanding Px-1 sign type. This sign can also be used in conjunction with a Px-1 sign to help identify specific level entrance points, or when the garage entrance is set back from the access drive.
Px-2These sign types are specifically designed for parking garages, where the sign can be installed either projecting from the wall or on the wall next to the vehicular entrance. These signs provide confirmation of which buildings are best accessed via the given garage and they include an area (either LED board or changeable message panel) where temporary messages can be displayed. Due to city ordinances, the use of variable-message signage is very restricted.
Px-5This is for use at non-public surface parking lots. This sign incorporates the changeable message panel to provide temporary parking designation information for special events.

Px-6 and Px-6aThese wall-mounted signs are used to identify the vehicular entrance and exit points of a parking garage structure. The entrance signs incorporate a clearance bar that identifies the minimum clearance height within a parking garage. Entrance and exit signs are also available as non-illuminated with reflective graphics (Px-7 and Px-7a).
Px-8These overhead mounted signs provide vehicular direction for parking and exit information as well as necessary regulatory information. Signs are available as suspended single-sided, suspended double-sided or beam mounted. They are also available in long and short versions to provide options for different garage clearance height situations.
Px-10This overhead mounted sign is available in a suspended or beam mounted version. The sign is used to warn drivers of two-way traffic or pedestrian crossing points.
Px-11This overhead mounted sign provides warning information of clearance height changes. This is available for either beam-mounting or suspended mounting. Sign should be strategically placed to allow taller vehicles the opportunity to turn around, but not block spaces for the taller vehicles prior to the clearance change.
Px-12These overhead beam-mounted or suspended signs are smaller than vehicular overhead signs, and are used to provide wayfinding information or caution information to pedestrian traffic within a parking garage. Elevator identification should be placed perpendicular to the pedestrian traffic at or near each elevator lobby.
Px-9These overhead mounted signs provide vehicular direction for parking and exit information as well as necessary regulatory information. Signs are available as suspended single-sided, suspended double-sided or beam mounted. They are also available in long and short versions to provide options for different garage clearance height situations.

Px-14Aluminum signs with digitally printed reflective graphics are used at public elevator banks to remind pedestrians what level they parked on and which garage they are in. These are to be placed either next to the elevator when the elevator is directly on vehicular and pedestrian paths, or on the outside of the elevator lobby when there is a vestibule that the pedestrian enters to access the elevator.
Px-15Aluminum panels with digitally printed reflective vinyl graphics are used to provide reinforcement of the parking level and garage. Signs are to be placed on the columns and back walls of parking spaces. Within public parking areas, they should be spaced about every 3 columns staggered along both sides of the drive aisle. Within staff parking areas, signs should be placed at both ends of the drive aisle and once within the center of the aisle. Because these signs provide reinforcement information for pedestrian traffic after they’ve exited their cars, placing the signs where parked cars may block them from the drive lane is not a concern.
The Px-15a or Px-15b can be used to provide pedestrian traffic direction to elevators, stairs, valet, and building or bridge access. The Px-15a allows one line of directional information. The Px-15b allows for two lines of information. These are particularly helpful when the elevators or bridges are easily identifiable.
Px-16This frame sign includes a large format printed insert. It outlines the parking levels within the given garage, including information about building entrances or bridges. This sign is located within each elevator cab and at the call buttons for the elevator or on the landings within parking garage stairwells. When within the garage or stairwell, a rigid insert with exterior grade inks shall be used.
Px-17This column mounted aluminum panel with reflective graphics provides vehicular guide information. This sign is mounted to the face of a column that is perpendicular to traffic. It is not to be used on the sides of columns where parked traffic can block the messaging. In order to minimize over-signing within a parking garage, it is recommended that this sign not duplicate information provided on overhead Px-8 and Px-9 signs, but be used only where those signs would not be visible.
Px-18Place this sign throughout a garage where a visitor must pay for their parking before exiting or have their ticket validated.
Rx-1, Rx-2, Rx-3, Rx-4 and Rx-5 A series of small post-and-panel sign options have been provided as part of this standard for providing general information such as reserved parking, accessible path or accessible entrance directions, directions to the Tram, or regulatory information.
Rx-6Use the campus boundary sign as required to mark the entrances to OHSU property. Freestanding and wall/fence mounted options have been provided.
Rx-7When information needs to be provided to the vehicular drive prior to entering the garage, the Rx-7 sign can be used. Designed for displaying parking rates, the large removable insert panel allows for easy changeability as rates and functions change.
Px-20These one-sided electronic signs are used within parking garages that have electronic counting systems. The sign indicates either the number of spaces available on each level, or whether the level is full or open. Messaging and digital displays appear on one side of the sign only.

D-1, D-1a, D-2, D-2a-fLocated near building entrances or at transition points between connecting buildings, these freestanding or wall-mounted directories provide the “universe of information” available to patients and visitors. The directory includes a listing of destinations accessible within that building, organized alphabetically into two sections, first destinations and then patient units. When connected to other buildings, there is a third section that includes instructions on how to access those other buildings. The directory also includes a map of the current floor showing public pathways and elevators.

D-3eThe physician directory listing is an alphabetical by last name listing of physicians. The directory can be used at a suite entrance, or at a building entrance.
D-3, D-3a, D-3f, D-3gThis wall mounted sign type is located at every public elevator bank and lists the public destinations that are accessible via that elevator, along with the floor where the destination is located. The directory should be located on the same wall as the elevator doors and call buttons. Destinations are separated between public destinations and patient units, and listed alphabetically within each group.
The decorative version of the elevator directory (D-3) is only used on the ninth floor of the Hospital, Kohler and Hatfield buildings. The standard directory units are to be used in all other instances.
D-3b, D-3cThese inside cab elevator directories are the same as the D-3a directories, but are located inside of the elevator cab rather than in the elevator lobby. Destination listings and organization should match the elevator directory in the lobbies.
D-4These wall-mounted sign types indicate the current floor and depicts a simplified version of the floor plan, showing symbols and destinations that are nearby. The user’s location is marked with a “You Are Here” arrow. The map should be correctly oriented to the viewer, so that the top of the map shows the direction that the viewer is facing. The D-4 and D-4b signs also contain a second insert with at-a-glance directional information for nearby buildings and the tram only. This sign type is to be used within long corridors to reinforce one’s location and direction, or at complex decision points.
The more decorative version of the D-4 and D-4a are for use on the ninth floor of the Hospital, Kohler and Hatfield buildings only. The D-4b and D-4c are to be used in all other locations.
D-5This custom overhead is to be used to mark when a visitor transitions from one building to another. When the building transition includes a change in floor, include the new floor information as well.

G-1, G-1a, G-1b, G-2, G-2a, G-2b, G-3These sign types are used to direct to elevators and nearby primary and secondary public destinations. Guide signs are located at key decision points or within long corridors where confirmation of direction is needed. The large version of this sign frame has space for up to 11 arrow and destination lines, the medium has space for up to 9 arrow and destination lines, and the small frame can display up to 7 arrows and destination lines. Destinations shall be listed in the following order - left, right, then straight ahead. Destinations within each arrow group are listed alphabetically. If an arrow grouping includes Emergency, then that arrow group is listed first, and Emergency is the first destination.
The more decorative G-1 sign types are to be used on floor 9 of the Hospital, Kohler and Hatfield buildings only. The G-2 family is for use everywhere else. The G-3 sign type can be used on any floor, and is to be used in locations where a visitor needs guide information, but there is no wall space available for a wall-mounted sign.
I-1, I-1a, I-1b, I-1c, I-1d, I-1eThis wall-mounted sign type displays the name of a primary public destination and repeats the name in tactile and Braille lettering. Only the top 10-15% of destinations will receive this high-level sign type. This sign is to be placed at the entrance to the destination and mounted in accordance with ADA requirements. International symbols from the graphic standards page are used where appropriate.
The more decorative I-1 and I-1a sign types are to be used on floor 9 of the Hospital, Kohler and Hatfield buildings only. The remaining options are for use everywhere else.

I-1d and I-1eThe I-1d includes a half-letter sized insert holder within the sign frame to allow for added messaging, such as classroom notices, hours of operations, or other special instructions. The I-1e includes a letter-sized insert holder and is similarly used for additional information that is pertinent to the patient or visitor.
I-4This small wall-mounted sign type displays the number of the patient room in tactile and Braille characters.
I-7, I-7a, I-7b and I-7cThis sign type is used to identify high-level public destinations in highly visible public areas such as registration and information desks and entrances to major departments.
I-2 and I-2aThese slightly smaller wall mounted identification signs are to be used at more secondary public destinations. The sign is to be placed at the entrance to the destination in accordance with ADA regulations. The I-2a sign is especially appropriate for use at conference rooms, where the lower insert holder can be used to post the room reservation schedule.
I-3This smaller room identification sign is to be used at offices and non-public or back-of-house destinations. The tactile/Braille panel should be used to display the room number.
I-6Nameplate signs identify staff office spaces where tactile and Braille are not required by code. When identifying an office, the copy on this sign should be limited to the occupants name and title.
I-5This small wall-mounted identification sign is used to designate utility type rooms such as telecommunication, electrical, housekeeping, etc.

O-3, O-3a, O-5, O-5bThese overhead signs are used to direct to high-level destinations at key decision-making points where adequate sight lines are available and a wall guide at standard height cannot be used to provide the direction. Their use should be minimized as people, particularly the elderly, tend to avoid looking up for directions. The O-3 sign face can display upto two destinations, whereas the O-5 and O-5b signs can hold upto four destinations per sign face. Destinations should be listed left, then right, then straight-ahead. If both destinations are in the same direction, they should be listed alphabetically.
R-1, R-1a, R-2 and R-3This collection of sign types are used to comply with code requirements for the identification of restrooms, stairs, warning labels, or interior stairwell instructions. Fire codes, building codes, ADA, and other regulations dictate the placement and use of these signs.

EXTERIOR AND PARKING DESIGN INTENT DRAWINGS

Fabrication Specifications
A. Quality StandardsThe materials, products, equipment and performance specifi cations described within, establish a standard of required function, dimension, appearance, performance and quality to be met by the Fabricator.
B. Structural DesignDetails on design intent drawings indicate a design approach for sign structure but do not necessarily include all fabrication details required for the complete structural integrity of the signs, including consideration for static, dynamic and erection loads during handling, erecting, and service at the installed locations, nor do they necessarily consider the preferred shop practices of the individual Fabricators. Therefore, it shall be the responsibility of the Fabricator to perform the complete structural design and engineering of the signs and to incorporate all the safety features necessary to adequately support the sign for its intended use and purpose and to protect the Owner. Fabricator shall also be responsible for ensuring that all signs meet local, state and federal codes.
C. Vandalism DesignFabrication and installation design is to withstand severe abuse and souvenir theft vandalism, but not less than the equivalent of resisting simple hand implements and tools (screwdrivers, knives, coins, keys, and similar items), and adult physical force. All hardware and fasteners within reach shall be vandal resistant.
D. SubstitutionNo substitution will be considered unless the Owner has received written request for approval. Fabricator may recommend equal or better equipment or method, but will be required, prior to the bid submittal, to provide full documentation establishing such a substitution’s equality or superiority as measured in the following:
• compliance with the visual design intent;• cost;• ease of maintenance; and • performance.
The burden of proof of the merit of the proposed substitute is upon the Fabricator. The Owner’s decision of approval or disapproval of a proposed substitution shall be fi nal.
E. Material HandlingThe Fabricator is to pack, wrap, crate, bundle, box, bag, or otherwise package, handle, transport, and store all fabricated work as necessary to provide protection from damage by every cause. Fabricator shall provide clear and legible identifying information on all product packaging to ensure proper on-site identifi cation and installation.
F. Sign Specifi cations: Construction MethodologyThe drawings call for a variety of fabrication techniques. Fabricators are given leeway to fabricate the signs to meet the intent of the designs depicted by the drawings.
1. Because different systems of extrusions may result in slightly different dimensional requirements, the total height and width dimensions described in the sign construction on the drawings may be considered “nominal” for the purposes of cost quote.
2. Sign faces are to be fabricated using aluminum plate of varying thicknesses, as specifi ed on design intent drawings, with a minimum thickness of .125 inches unless otherwise noted.
3. Sign cabinet seams shall be sealed to ensure they are watertight.
4. All fi nishes are to be satin fi nish, free from fading, peeling or cracking. Paint preparation of all exterior metal surfaces of the sign to include removal of all scratches and imperfections, sanding and chemical etching. Substrate cleaning, preparation, paint application and paint thickness to be in strict compliance with Matthews Paint or AkzoNobel published recommendations. Acceleration of the drying process is not allowed.
5. Unless otherwise noted on the design intent drawings, all cut-out push-through lettering and shapes shall be routed from a single sheet of white acrylic, with a minimum thickness of 3/8” and pushed through 1/16”. Routed letters and shapes that are bonded to a separate acrylic sheet are not acceptable; they must be routed from a single sheet.
• Acrylic is to be attached to the back of the sign using adhesive, mechanical fasteners, or both depending on the design specifi cations.
• All letter knock-outs (interior of letter forms) are to be stud mounted through the acrylic.
• When illuminating the acrylic face with LED, 2447 shall be the standard white acrylic.
• Acceptable spacing between the push-through acrylic and the cut-out aluminum is 1/32” to 1/16” depending on the copy height (if the copy is larger than 32”, alternate spacing may be used to allow for the change in material expansion).
6. Except where approved otherwise by Owner, conceal fasteners.
7. Exposed welded joints must be fi lled and ground smooth so that there is no seam visible when painted.
8. Any sign faces smaller than 8’ by 20’ are to be fabricated from 1 piece of seamless material.
9. On welded joints, dimensional and structural welding defects will not be accepted, including but not limited to: poor weld contours, including excessive bead convexity and reinforcement, and considerable concavity or undersized welds; cracks; undercutting; porosity; incomplete fusion; inadequate penetration; spatter; and non-metallic inclusions. Welding is to be performed by AWS (or similar) certifi ed personnel, following AWS Standard Welding Procedure Specifi cations (SWPSs) for steel, aluminum, and stainless steel as appropriate.
10. Non-welded joints between various portions of signs must have a tight, hairline-type appearance, without gaps. Provide suffi cient fastenings to preclude looseness, racking, or similar movement.
11. Provide drain holes as needed to prevent accumulation of water within signs. Holes must be inconspicuous and be in inconspicuous locations; holes must be located such that drainage does not occur onto signs, or other surfaces subject to staining. Provide internal system of baffl es to prevent “light leaks” through drain holes of
illuminated signs. Provide color-coordinated insect screening over drain holes.
12. Non-illuminated sign faces are to have lettering and graphics created as mask and spray or surface-applied vinyl typography using Avery or 3M exterior grade, minimum 5-year warranty. Certain applications are to be engineer-grade refl ective vinyl as specifi ed on the design intent drawings.
13. Visible metal joints must adhere to a fi t tolerance of .01”.
14. Unlit channel letter faces must be .25” aluminum. Channel letter returns must be .080” aluminum.
G. Sign Specifi cations: Illumination & Electrical1. It shall be the responsibility of the sign fabricator to perform the complete electrical design for illuminated signs. Illuminated signs shall be designed by an electrical engineer and shall be fabricated and wired to be compliant with current UL® listing requirements, and shall be UL® certifi ed.
2. All internally illuminated sign cabinets are to have an access panel that is tight fi tting, lightproof and waterproof. Access panels are to be in an accessible location, out of sight, and shall be shown on shop drawings.
3. Internally illuminated signs are to have adequate internal system of ventilation to assure a uniform dissipation of heat from electrical components of electrically powered and illuminated signs, heat (solar) absorption by sign and other sources. Any openings in exterior surfaces must be internally baffl ed to prevent light leaks and prevent entry of rain, snow, wind-blown debris, and other foreign matter, and are to be covered with interior color-coordinated insect screen.
4. Only labels required by law are permitted to be mounted on the exterior of the sign face, and they shall be located in a position that is as discreet as possible.
5. All internally illuminated interior metal surfaces shall be painted white using Matthews’ refl ective white paint, or shall be lined with 3M’s Matte White Light Enhancement Film, to enhance and evenly distribute light.
6. All electrical components shall be built to be housed within sign cabinets. All wiring and raceways within the sign are to be completely enclosed. Internal illumination by lamps is required to provide adequate and even illumination over the face of the sign without hot spots or shadows. “Halo” effects, “spreading” or similar light spill due to excessive transmission of the backlight source shall be minimized.
7. Illumination to be provided by exterior UL® rated LED only, (as specifi ed on design intent drawings). Lamps or other internal hardware must not be visible through the translucent letterforms and graphics.
8. All internally illuminated exterior signs are to have their own electric eye on/off control to turn the sign on at night and off in the morning, unless the Owner specifi es a need for a timer.
9. Verify location of power provided by others prior to sign fabrication.
10. Face-lit channel letters with a 16” or shorter cap height shall be trimless. Face-lit channel letters taller than 16” may use a low-profi le trim cap. Internally illuminated channel letters shall be illuminated using LED, unless otherwise noted on the design intent drawings. Transformers for channel letters shall be remote transformers wherever possible. If remote transformers are not applicable, then all electrical components shall be contained within the channel letter itself. Raceways are not acceptable unless specifi cally noted on the design intent drawing or if approved by the Owner. All raceways must be painted the same color as the wall on which the sign will be mounted. Channel letters to be painted on the inside with Matthews’ refl ective white paint, or lined with 3M’s Matte White Light Enhancement Film to enhance and evenly distribute light.
I. Fonts/TypefacesThe fonts used for this project were selected specifi cally for this project by the Owner, and include those listed in the graphic standards.
It is the responsibility of the fabricator to purchase the fonts.
No substitution of any other typefaces may be made. Under no circumstances are typefaces to be electronically distorted (“squeezed” or “extended”) for purposes of fi tting to the specifi ed sign or general alteration of the sign face composition unless noted in the drawings. This includes (but is not limited to) stretching, squeezing, tilting, outlining or shadowing.
1. All letterforms, symbols or graphics shall be reproduced either by photographic or computer-generated means. Hand-cut characters are not acceptable. Cutting shall be done in such manner that edges and corners of fi nished letterforms will be sharp and true. Letterforms with nicked, cut, ragged, rounded corners, and similar disfi gurements will not be acceptable.
2. All letterforms shall be made from material and gauge as indicated on design intent drawings. Typefaces shall be replicated as indicated on the drawing.
3. Ligatures are to be turned off.
4. Apostrophes are to be used, not foot marks. Note that there is a difference in most fonts.
5. Silk-screened and vinyl copy is to match the sheen of the copy panel background (satin). Edges of letters shall be straight and corners sharp. Surface of letters shall be uniform in color fi nish, and free from pinholes and other imperfections.
6. Silk-screened images shall be executed with photo screens prepared from original art. No hand-cut screens will be accepted. Original art shall be defi ned as artwork that is a fi rst generation reproduction of the specifi ed art.
19STANDARDS MANUAL FOR WAYFINDING SIGNAGE
Fabrication Specifications
7. Silk-screening shall be highest quality, with sharp lines and no sawtooths or uneven ink coverage. Screens shall be photographically produced. Application of inks through screens shall consist of one fl ood pass and one print pass. Images shall be uniform in color and ink thickness. Images shall be free from squeegee marks and lines resulting from improper print stroke or screen off contact height. Signs shall be placed in adequate drying racks with minimum of 2 inches between racks for ample airfl ow. Sign racks shall have system of forced airfl ow between layers to provide proper drying and curing of inks. After signs have dried completely according to the ink manufacturer’s time allowance, signs may be packaged.
8. “Pushed-through” copy must fi t accurately into routed portions of cabinet with tight, hairline joints and snugly into back of formed (channel) letters.
9. The edges and corners of routed letterforms shall be sharp and true. Letterforms with nicked, cut, ragged, rounded (positive or negative) corners, and similar disfi gurements will not be acceptable. Letterforms shall be aligned so as to maintain a base line parallel to the sign format, with margins and layout as indicated on design intent drawings and approved shop drawings. Vertical strokes shall be plumb. Mechanically fasten center of letters to acrylic plastic as described in the design intent.
10. Vinyl graphics and letterforms shall be computer-cut.
Installation
A. Permits and VariancesFabricator shall be knowledgeable of relevant local code requirements and honor same in fabrication and installation. Where applicable, it is the responsibility of the Fabricator to secure any and all necessary permits for signage installation. It is the responsibility of the Owner to secure variances, should any be required. It is the Owner’s responsibility to call the appropriate agency to have all underground utilities properly located and marked. Any damage to below-grade utilities or structures for which the Owner has provided adequate location information is the responsibility of the Fabricator.
B. Site VisitPrior to installation of the signs, the Fabricator is to visit the proposed site to observe existing conditions and verify all signage required and its location with Owner. At this time the locations shall be staked using a non-permanent visible device such as spray chalk or non-permanent paint. Certain signs may be located on sloped grades and may require uneven footings for each post. Site-verify all locations to determine special requirements for footing templates, if required.
The fi nal Sign Message Schedule and Sign Location Plan shall be consulted together and shall be approved by the Owner to determine the precise location for each sign. Any necessary adjustments will be made with the approval of the Owner.
C. Masonry/FootingsAny concrete bases for signage are to be poured in place and footings are to extend beneath the frost line, or deeper to meet local code. All footings or bases should be poured within a form and level with grade unless otherwise specifi ed in the design intent drawings. Foundation/footings should be level with grade unless
otherwise noted or as specifi ed by state or local code. Foundation/footings should not extend above grade more than 2” and exposed edges should be fi nished with a bevel to prevent chipping. It’s recommended that the concrete be fl oated by machine or hand before fi nishing in order to embed larger aggregates especially when part of the footing or base extends above ground. Concrete surface should have a smooth or brushed fi nish grade appearance. All concrete bases and footings should be edged to break any bond with the form and create a neat appearance. All forms should be removed once the concrete has properly cured. Concrete and reinforcement specifi cations shall be shown on shop drawing submittals. The Fabricator is responsible for the necessary templates, mounting plates and hardware for concrete and masonry bases. A minimum 2’ rock bed with landscape edging or concrete pad must be added around each concrete base as protection from landscaping maintenance as specifi ed on the drawings.
All masonry (concrete block, poured concrete, brick, slab, veneer, mortar, etc.) is to be properly treated and protected to maintain the structural integrity of the masonry work with exposure to all environmental conditions found at the site. For exposed or visible masonry, this shall include the application of protective sealers or similar fi nishes to diminish the effects of close-proximity sprinkling or irrigation systems.
Signs are to be mounted on J-bolt footings, centered on the concrete base or footing and engineered per code unless otherwise specifi ed in the design intent drawings.
D. Wind LoadSigns, banners and mounting devices shall be engineered to withstand a minimum 30-psf wind load normal to the sign, or greater as per local code, in addition to the weight of the sign. The Fabricator shall determine appropriate method of anchoring signs to the locations specifi ed to meet these requirements as well as all local code requirements.
E. MountingAll signs to be mounted level and true. All exposed hardware is to be touch-up painted on site as required. It is preferred that all bolts, nuts, washers, or other fasteners shall be stainless. However galvanized steel is acceptable, so long as all exposed surfaces are sealed.
While sign type drawings may specify or indicate possible mounting and/or mounting hardware details, the Fabricator will be able to substitute equal or better hardware and techniques, based upon their experience with similar mounting situations and as long as the visual appearance of the sign is not compromised from that shown in the design intent drawings.
All signage products must be installed such that there are no misalignments between visible components. Sign elements intended to be removable or changeable after installation must function as intended without binding, sticking or blocking. It will be the responsibility of the Fabricator to correct any installation misalignments at no charge.
Fabricator and their installers are expected to have knowledge of ADA and Title 24/OSHPD mounting guidelines and city zoning codes, general sign locating practices, and any particular unique installations
defi ned by Owner. It is the desire of the Owner that the Fabricator follow these guidelines as well as architectural cues in installing for the best visual placement, keeping a reasonable distance from protruding objects. Any signage that is improperly located is to be moved to the proper location by the Fabricator, and repairs to wall surfaces and signage are to be at the Fabricator’s expense.
If the installers are unable to make a decision about any sign locations, they can contact the Owner, providing a graphic representation of the questionable area, or contact the Owner for on-site options.
F. ElectricalThe Owner will be responsible for providing a power source to within 10 feet of the base of each sign requiring power (either at grade or below grade). Power is to be 120 or 277 (LED illumination should be 120) volts at 60 cycles unless otherwise noted in the documents. It is the responsibility of the Fabricator to manipulate the existing conduit to its proper location, install an external disconnect, extend the conduit through the concrete base (or posts) to align with the point of hookup, and run the power supply through it. Conduit running from the disconnect to the sign shall travel within the concrete base, not on its surface. The Owner will be responsible for the fi nal electrical connection.
G. PunchlistIt is required that the Fabricator complete a walk through with the Owner immediately following installation to identify any errors, such as construction or installation issues. Such errors are to be corrected in a timely manner, and to the satisfaction of the Owner.
H. Signage WarrantyThe Fabricator is to provide a written fi ve (5) year full replacement warranty to the Owner that all signs will be free of defects due to craft work and materials including, but not limited to:
• Bubbling, chalking, rusting or other disintegration of the sign panel, graphics or of the edges.
• Corrosion appearing beneath paint surfaces of panels, brackets, posts or other support assemblies (except as an obvious result of vandalism or other external damage).
• Corrosion of fasteners.• The assemblies not remaining true and plumb on their supports.• Fading, chalking and discoloration of the colors and fi nishes
within the vinyl and paint manufacturer’s stated warranty period.• Peeling, delamination or warping (“oil canning”).• Repair and reinstallation of signage due to failed mountings.
Fabricator shall also extend in writing to the Owner all manufacturers’ warranties.
I. Repair or ReplacementWithout additional cost to the Owner the Fabricator shall repair or replace, including installation, any defective signs or hardware which develop during the warranty period and repair any damage to other work due to such imperfections. The Fabricator will be required to fully replace all signs that are in error relative to the working documents (sign message schedule and sign type drawings) that will be submitted to the Fabricator upon award of contract.
