1911 – First Optimist Club started in Buffalo, NY. With growing urbanization and industrialization, Optimist Clubs offered a way to express the desire for a positive outlook amidst change.

1919 – Optimist International was founded at a gathering of all known Optimist Clubs in Indianapolis, Indiana.

1920s – The Optimist Creed was adopted, the octagon logo was developed, The Optimist Magazine was first published and the organization adopted a motto : Friend of Boy. (Revised later to be Friend of Youth.)

1930s – After losing membership at the beginning of the Great Depression, Optimist International ended the decade with twice as many members as before.

1940s – Millions of dollars were raised in Optimist-sponsored war bond drives. Membership continued to grow.

1950s-60s-70s – Known for expansion of programs and members and the creation of the 501c3 Optimist International Foundation.

1980s – Women joined Optimist International and statistics revealed that Optimist Clubs reached five million young people each year.

1990s to present – technology led growth with televised OIJGC, Rose Bowl Parade, Internet Safety Programs and the international humanitarian appeal of the Childhood Cancer Campaign.
