SUSTAINABLE COASTLINES CHARITABLE TRUST • CC26943
1 APRIL 2016 – 31 MARCH 2017
Programme Manager Oliver Vetter – and our ground-breaking ‘Restorative Justice’ programme at Waikeria Prison, where we raised the funds to establish a nursery, propagate seedlings with prisoners gaining horticulture qualifications, plant trees and protect the sacred Pūniu River from livestock through fencing.
Perhaps our favourite result this year however is the dramatic results increase that our ‘enabled collaborators’ have achieved; delivering directly on our mission and vision statements through our support.
Our international chapters and local ambassadors have learned, adapted and utilised the models that we have worked so hard to create and removed 2.5 times more litter from coastlines than last year!
Meanwhile our good friends at Pūniu River Care significantly increased their impacts with our help on funding, governance and strategy. This
We are very pleased to announce that our impacts have continued to grow and that our capacity to deliver on our charitable purpose is better than ever. The numbers are up and this year we have also delivered significant achievements in new areas of focus. The future for our coastlines and waterways is looking bright.
We are particularly proud of the fact that we have exponentially expanded our tree planting activities, giving back more and more to the waterways we love.
We planted 19,178 trees through our direct activities alone, 203% up from last year. We are pleased to inform you that our innovative programmes are continuing to develop, enabling these results and those of the people we help, to grow.
These impacts were achieved during our Love Your Water project – a nationwide training and tree planting tour led by the seemingly indefatigable
marae-based social enterprise planted 70,000 trees to restore the Pūniu River. Since they began in 2015, they have grown into a high performing organisation that employs 8 young Māori leaders.
We are absolutely ecstatic to see the results of these groups eclipse our own when it comes to tree planting impact, because we know that we cannot do this alone. It is about enabling people to look after the places they love.
We are very much looking forward to seeing these impacts continue to grow. If the last nine years of hard work and increasing results are anything to go by, we can expect that to be the case.
So join us on our epic journey to stop pollution and be part of the solution by inspiring people to make our beaches beautiful and our waterways healthy for generations to come.
In March 2017, we successfully completed and opened our 466 square metre ‘Flagship’ Education Centre in perhaps the most exclusive location in the country – the Wynyard Quarter on Auckland’s waterfront.
More than 2,000 people contributed to the build, including prisoners, Community Work Offenders and a full suite of pro bono consultants. This structure is made from 85% upcycled or salvaged materials and is on track to becoming a fully certified ‘Living Building’. It has also been named a global finalist in some of the most prestigious environmental awards on the planet and could well become the most sustainable building in Aotearoa.
Having launched our International Volunteer Programme in early March 2016, this year saw our day-to-day on the ground activities skyrocket, with 87 volunteers flying-in from around the globe to help us restore freshwater and clean-up coastlines. This programme
This is our story; where we celebrate all of the hard work our charity has completed for the people of Aotearoa and the Pacific Islands.
Einstein was right: ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’
We are constantly looking for ways to deliver innovative problem solving through collaboration with multiple sectors of society.
Our work developing skills with offenders through environmental restoration aims to reduce re-offending rates, ultimately saving taxpayer money and reducing community harm. This really reflects the great scientists’ mantra.
The simultaneous ecological impacts we have delivered with support from The Department of Corrections have been a key highlight in the growth of results.
has also contributed significant funding to support our charitable work - a true social enterprise model.
This year, our results also reflect a strong focus on our mission to enable people. Key highlights include collaborators such as Pūniu River Care who, with help from our experience and resources, have developed to commence a journey to plant 80 million trees alongside their sacred river in the Waikato.
Meanwhile, our international chapters in Papua New Guinea and Hawaii, continue to thrive and we are starting to set our sights on further extension of our vision.

Established in 2009, the Sustainable Coastlines Charitable Trust is a registered New Zealand charity. We achieve our mission by delivering and supporting clean-up events, riparian planting and restoration activities, education programmes and training workshops around Aotearoa.
Read on for a summary of our impacts from FYE 31 March 2017.
Our mission
To enable peopleto look after the waterways and
coastlines they love.
We love our oceans and want them litter-free, the way they should be. We clean-up beaches, deliver education to change behaviour and reduce litter, and train others to spread this work far and wide.
Our vision
Our vision
Rivers flow to the sea and many of them are sick. We restore waterways by planting trees, educating people on how to solve these problems, and training communities to look after their own backyard.
Our vision
People created the challenges we face. People must solve them. We use inspiring events, education focused on behaviour change, and targeted training to enable people to look after the places they love.
By delivering and supporting grass roots actions on coastlines around New Zealand, we work towards our vision for Beautiful Beaches.
